13.01.2022 Here's an idea: if your business is so, you know, busy, pay someone to do the essentials that will free up some time. Partly so you don't go nuts and partly so you can drive the business. Accounting. Stock control. Invoicing. Social media. Whatever you need to do, do it. If you are stuck doing a half-hearted task badly, your actual work will suffer.
11.01.2022 Visited an independent retailer in Perth. Minuscule range of alternate varieties or styles, bucket loads of wines which are very similar to each other in terms of price and style. Asked the staff if they even get asked for something different much. "Yeah, but if we don't have something they'll just buy something we do have so that's ok."... But will they be back? Look after the customers and they'll look after you...
08.01.2022 Solid marketing of a product cannot be complete without knowledge of the actual sales and detail of selling. I can't count how many labels and business plans miss the actual detail of selling. And not just in wine.
02.01.2022 There really isn't a fine line between a good wine list and one which fails to deliver. Assess what the business needs and how an improved offering can deliver an exponential return on investment. Or sell the list to one supplier for the sake of ease. Or buy generic commercial wines and explain to people every night why serving a wine in your venue WILL make it more expensive than the shop shelf where it sits at $8. Up to your business. But like any business, doing the numbers is critical to winning at the game.
