25.01.2022 Talk less, Listen more

25.01.2022 Sensory Processing Disorder may not be as obvious at it seems. The effects can seem to be random and vary from person to person. In this video, we talk about Sensory Seekers and Sensory Avoiders.

25.01.2022 When Jo mentioned she wanted to paint the babies sleep room and maybe a mural, I jumped at the chance to get creative. This weekend our sleep room has had a makeover with new wall paint, a mountains feature wall painted by myself and some new shelving and carpet laid by Jo and her handy hubby Kevin. Educators really can do it all . We cant wait for the Babies to enjoy their new relaxing space. ... Let them sleep, for when they wake they will move mountains.

24.01.2022 In this blog post, we share a few ways you can start with sensory play to help bring balance to your childs senses. Read about it here: http://ow.ly/6rnR50Az6VI

24.01.2022 NEW SPD RESOURCE I created a new resource that is meant to show, at a high level, how sensory seeking behaviors and sensory avoiding behaviors can manifest. I... have seen some great resources out there, but none that clearly show that the behaviors are NOT mutually exclusive. In fact, I am fairly certain that the "mix" version is far more common than the seeking/avoiding versions. You can find a printable pdf of this resource on my website along with all of the other resources I've created. I'm including them all here for easy reference and for those who have not seen them before. Feel free to share these with anyone who might benefit. Particularly educators who are eager to understand our children but may not have been exposed to resources like these. Download them here: nicolefilipponeauthor.com And if you're interested in joining my sensory community, I would love for you to join us here... 22.01.2022 FUN MATH ACTIVITIES for toddlers and preschoolers https://happytoddlerplaytime.com/21-fast-easy-math-activit/

22.01.2022 World Post Day is celebrated each year on the 9th of October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, B...ern. It was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Since then, countries across the world participate annually in the celebrations. Over the past week our Kindy children have been talking about the post, post man and reading a story about pen pals. We also practiced walking holding onto a knot on a rope and road safety as we would be walking near a road and through the shopping complex car park to get to our local red mail box. Our children decorated special post cards to mail to our sister centre’s Kindy children. Over the past couple of years from time to time we have sent items back and forth between the centres building our pen pal relationship. We really hope they like our post cards and can’t wait to get the their reply. Our Kindy children walked so beautifully holding onto the rope and they sat so patiently waiting for their turn to post their mail. Well done

Thank you to those families and educators who donated items.

20.01.2022 When you see something unhelpful or unsafe PAUSE... Get curious and look for ways to help your child feel and do better.

20.01.2022 Working with children on projects has become recognised as an effective strategy to engage young minds and support children to flourish. Through project work children can become highly motivated, feel actively involved in their own learning, and develop a sense of belonging. Children feel valued as their curiosity and sense of inquiry is nurtured and extended. Possibilities for learning are endless as groups of children work together with a deep exploration of ideas while wor...king collaboratively as a group. Our Kindys latest project was creating our very own scarecrow To keep the birds away so they dont eat our veggies (Miriya). As spring is upon us and plants have begun to grow, our Kindy children planted some corn and cucumber seeds, adding to our existing garden of pineapple, cabbage, broccoli and kale. Scaffolding on the childrens learning we read some stories about planting seeds and what the seeds need to grow. Sun and water(Zari). In our stories the vegetable gardens had a scarecrow and the children thought they would like to make their own. The kindy children watched some video tutorials on how to make our own scarecrow to find out what we needed and sang the Dingle dangle scarecrow song. After asking our families for donated items throughout this week the children have worked collaboratively to stuff the limbs, watched as Andrea used the big drill to connect the wood and the children drew the face on. Now our scarecrow has pride of place watching over our garden, compost and worm farm. As we were scaring the birds away from the garden, we kindly made a bird feeder at the other end of the yard so the birds could still visit the children.

19.01.2022 Today we celebrated World Animal Day with the children by having a visit from one of our families Sanella and her friend Liz, they brought in two guniea pigs for the children to see. The toddlers and Kindy children had so much fun they were very excted to pat the guinea pigs and have a turn of holding them. Later in the morning we had a special visit from Steph and Melanie from Perth Vet Emergency. The children were thrilled to see them and the beautiful dogs they brought in. Steph talked about all the different animals they look after and how they help them feel better. The children also got to feed the dogs treats and hear their heart beat through a stethoscope. We were very proud of the children as they did so well being gentle and calm with the animals.

Following my evidence-based strategies, families are seeing incredible results. The feedback Ive received so far from this masterclass has been so exciting! Definitely worth the time. 17.01.2022 We were never meant to do this alone. We grow faster when we grow together. As an early childhood educator and foster parent supporting high needs children, I k...now this gig isnt easy, and it doesnt always come naturally. I also know that once we understand how children learn and develop behaviours, the challenging moments which often create a wedge in the parent-child relationship can calmly be replaced with connection, empowerment and encouragement. Conscious parenting does not begin with raising children. It begins with raising parents. The journey of parenting should start with looking inwards. I hear from parents every day trying to break old patterns from their childhood and parent more consciously. If you are struggling to remove yourself from the ways you were parented and the negative cycles youd prefer to leave behind, I want to encourage you. The only parent you are destined to become is the one that you decide to be. Your past doesnt get to choose your legacy. Committing to breaking cycles from our childhood and parenting consciously can lead to imposter syndrome bringing self-doubt into the mix, Am I doing this all wrong? No one is fully conscious all of the time. Making unconscious decisions and falling back into old habits is natural. We will give you the tools to get back up and keep moving. Parenting is the best self-development course you will ever take. If your child needs help with: Frequent outbursts Irrational worry Over competitiveness Sibling fighting Aggression at home or school Quick to give up Avoiding anything new Low cooperation Poor decision making Frequent defiance My 1:1 program will give you the tools to navigate parenting through these common behaviour challenges. The good news is that everything is hard before it becomes easier. An important reminder moving forward is that it is not possible to calm your overwhelmed child when you are overwhelmed. Our sessions will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to regulate these stressful situations. All problem behaviour is your child struggling to process their stress calmly and mindfully. Helping your child cope with stress is comparable to how we manage detours. If the bridge ahead is closed your brain freezes for a moment and then searches for a secondary pathway. The detour may be on slow roads but with practice, you discover more short cuts and gradually your travel time gets faster. The process of emotional regulation takes practice and time. Children will struggle at first when something doesnt go as expected. They may freeze and then resist. But, in time and with your guidance they will practice their executive functioning skills (reasoning, regulating, solving problems, etc) and get better at it. And, so will you. You will learn how to support your children through: Strong core values Positive, growth mindset Time management skills Healthy self-esteem Better relationships between siblings Better relationships with parents/carers Self-discovery More confidence Resilience Critical thinking Daily mindfulness Intrinsic motivation Better decision making Thought tracking Managing emotions Setting and reaching goals Clear sense of belonging Responsibility and more!!! (too many to list!) A few things to know moving forward are Parenting is stressful. The key to conscious, calm parenting is not navigating your childs behaviour but in navigating your stress during behaviour challenges calmly and mindfully. Children learn how to listen based on how we speak to them. Cooperation is built on your relationship and ability to empathise with your child when resistance is heightened. What does my child need from me in order to be successful? Conscious parenting is a daily and lifelong discipline. You will learn how to initiate positive daily habits that will help you reach your goals with ease and grace. Only you can decide your parenting legacy. The strategies that we introduce will be a daily commitment to that legacy. I would love to support your family! Get in touch if this sounds like a good fit!!

14.01.2022 Many people have kids with Sensory Processing Disorder and don't know there's a reason for their behaviors (and believe it or not, many adults have it and don't... know... that was me a few years ago! ) So... here's a post explaining it a little bit. ***SPD is complicated and can look different in every person who has it. This is a quick list of possible ways it can manifest... but it's important to note that the left/right sides are not mutually exclusive. Many people exhibit a mix of behaviors from both sides.*** You can find some more SPD resources at nicolefilipponeauthor.com #positiveparenting #positiveparentingtips #specialneedskids #specialneedsparenting #specialneedsmom #specialneedseducation #specialneeds #spd #sensoryprocessingdisorder #spdawareness #sensoryprocessingdisorderparentsupport #sensoryprocessingdisorderawareness #autismacceptance #autismawareness #autismsupport #sensorystories

06.01.2022 We offer rewards because we dont want to deal with a childs resistancewe just want them to do as we ask without a fight. We incentivize cooperation rather th...an risk making a child upset. Rewards in any form, however (bribes for good behavior, treats for using the potty, sticker charts, etc.) are a short-term fix with numerous long-term negative consequences. They make it far more difficult to cultivate a relationship based on connection and trust. In order to comfortably accept limits, children need us to: set those limits with confidence communicate clear expectations gracefully accept any and all feelings they might have in response - @curious.parenting . . . @curious.parenting See more
