25.01.2022 At a Conventional Christian school, Bible classes provide a spiritual aspect to an otherwise progressive approach to education. Much of Christianity is set apart because the progressive model implicitly believes education has two parts: religious and secular. Students develop a solid knowledge of Scripture, but often lack the experience to apply it in historical or existential ways. This can limit Christian worldview application to other subjects they study and it results ...in a divided view, not a Christian worldview. When students are met with the challenges of modern ideologies, they will react as they have learned, by compartmentalizing their faith in relation to other fields of knowledge. This will make it less and less relevant to the daily exercise of living and thinking as a Christian in a post-Christian world. Classical Christian education (CCE) holds that the truth of Christ’s lordship is manifest in every area of study, academic and personal alike. Classicists maintain that everything has unity in exactly one pointit was and is created and sustained by Jesus Christ. Students are asking why to a variety of deep theological questions and asked to wrestle with these why’s under guidance and discussion. Each primary work read is understood through a parallel reading of scripture. This practice equips students to wisely navigate life’s ethical and spiritual challenges that they will inevitably face. Students learn to, as Paul wrote in Corinthians, to take every thought captive to Christ, meaning that they recognize the permanent and beautiful truth of redemption, in spite of what political propaganda, enticing opportunities, and cultural rhetoric they may encounter. Classicists do not mean to diminish this good work of conventional Christian schools, but rather encourage parents to consider teaching their children to seek and apply truth in the integrated fashion that classical Christian education alone offers. https://classicalchristian.org/bible-class-vs-biblical-in/ #classicalchristianeducation #classicalchristian #classicalchristianschool #classicalchristianhomeschool #classicalchristianhomeschoo
23.01.2022 We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. The modern experiment in education, therefore, is about 100 years old, and flagging. The classical experiment is about 1000 years old and reviving. T.S. 23.01.2022 Why Latin? You may have heard that Latin is a dead language. This is a strong, negative pronouncement to most ears. Scholars, however, use the term in a technical sense that leaves plenty of room for life. A dead language is one that is no longer the native language of any community, even if it is still in use in other ways. An extinct language, by contrast, is one that no longer has any speakers or any written use. Some languages are also called liturgical languages, bec...ause they continue to be used in religious contexts, or classical languages, which continue to be studied and read through a rich body of ancient literature. Greek, Latin, Chinese, Arabic, and Sanskrit are all considered classical languages. Some would even include Hebrew and French in that list. Latin is both a classical and a liturgical language, a dead language that never died. By this we mean that while Latin may not be the native language of any community, it is still spoken (even if only by a few) and is commonly studied and read for a variety of compelling, beneficial reasons. Latin also has not died because it was reborn and renamed as French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanianthe five Romance languages. About 90 percent of the vocabulary of these languages comes from Latin. These Romance languages are actually forms of Latin that have evolved over the centuries in various regions with some interaction from other local tongues. by Dr. Christopher Perrin #classicalchristianeducation #classicalchristian #classicalchristianschool #classicalchristianhomeschool #classicalchristianhomeschooling #classicalchristianacademy #classicalchristiancommunity #classicalchristianeducator #classicalchristiancurriculum #classicalchristianity
21.01.2022 Education is primarily about what we are trained to love, not just what we are taught to know... Classical Christian schools were uniquely designed to help parents obey Pauls instruction in Ephesians, And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the paideia of the Lord. .. In the first century to the 19th, classical Christian education was the way Christian parents cultivated a Christian Paideia in their children. Paideia is powerful be...cause it influences who we are in a deep way that is almost imperceptible to us its woven into us from childhood. If you listen to educators today, youll typically hear one common goal: College and Career Readiness. But what if students were asked to rise to a greater purpose? Parents at Classical Christian schools are realizing that their kids can rise to something greater, something deeper, if we dare to imagine it. They disciple students to love great art, great books, and to appreciate the Greatness of God. Classicalchristian.org See more
21.01.2022 A Brief History of Classical Education - Part 2 The year of 1789 marked a departure from the authority of Scripture and the church to an allegiance instead to the power of mans native intellect. Science with its varied subjects came into its own, and while most scientists were also Christians or theists, there was an increasing tendency to study and understand the world without reference to biblical teaching or authority. Still, however, most forms of education retained the... rudiments of the trivium: Grammar, Logic and Rhetoric. It really is not until the modern period, beginning in early 1800s, that we begin to see the first signs of the erosion of classical education, but even then we note that this erosion was a slow, gradual process, and throughout the 1800s classical education was still the dominant approach in the United States and Europe. Through the early 1900s however, this erosion quickened and by 1950 the educational landscape of the western world had clearly shifted from a classical to a progressive model. 21.01.2022 Give a man a fish and he eats a meal; teach him how to fish and he eats for a lifetime. The application to Classical Education is that we are to teach students how to fish (they are fishing for knowledge and feeding their minds). The pole, the line, the hook are grammar, logic and rhetoric, always with them in their tackle box as they seek for wisdom, and eventually teach others. Put another way, Classical Educators seek to teach students how to learn for themselves. Stud...ents who have mastered language, that is, who have mastered grammar and vocabulary, logical reasoning, and persuasive, eloquent speaking and writingthese students have the requisite tools necessary to study and master any subject they choose. We can imagine such a student in college tackling a new subject. He has learned in the early grammar years to approach a subject by breaking it down to its fundamental parts and mastering them by memorizing themusing chants, songs and other mnemonic devices. He has learned during their logic years to study the ordered relationship among these parts, and to derive the principles that govern them. Finally, he has learned during his rhetoric years to discover how to take his acquired knowledge and communicate it effectively and creatively, applying it to new and varied situations and needs. 21.01.2022 The Trivium - Part 1 The Latin word Trivium means where three roads meet. All education, up until this century, was structured around these three roads of learning. The ancients called them Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. The Bible calls them simply Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom. ... For the Lord gives wisdom: out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6 The Trivium takes advantage of natural inclinations of children at different stages of their development to maximize learning.
20.01.2022 When thinking about our kids education, these things need to be spoken about. There is an agenda in the world.. whose agenda is dictating your child’s education? God reigns over mathematic. He reigns over psychology. He reigns over chemistry. He reigns over Biology. Why is that so important to point out when talking about how to educate our children? ... Because reality is integrated, not compartmentalised. We need to train kids to become relevant to the daily exercise of living and thinking as a Christian in a postmodern world.

18.01.2022 Partnership with parents Classical schools work with and for parents. Since we believe that it is the parents responsibility (not the states) to educate their children, it cannot be otherwise. Our authority over children is delegated to us from parents who have enlisted us to help them in their educational task. We see ourselves as in loco parentisin the place of the parents. ... This does not mean that parents dictate the curriculum or pedagogy; it does mean that teachers serve the parents, listen carefully to their feedback, and seek to forge true relationships with parents in order to best understand and educate their children. Parents are welcome in the classroom and also take their responsibility seriously by reviewing and helping with school work, encouraging their child to be disciplined and diligent and generally supporting the teachers and staff of the school. They are reading to their children, praying with them, instructing them in a myriad of ways around the house and the dinner table, discussing books, field trips and the experience of the day, counseling and exhorting them regarding peer relationships, chores and play. They are parenting. Parents at Classical Schools understand that the school is assisting them to fulfill their responsibility. 17.01.2022 We pursue learning because God is a God of knowledge and thought and wisdom, and in order to reflect and represent Him, we must become people of knowledge and thought and wisdom. This pursuit can take a variety of forms depending on context and personal giftedness, and it may not necessarily include advanced degrees or groundbreaking theories. But at the very least, becoming people who image him, becoming all we are created to be, means learning to love Him, not simply with ...all of our hearts, but with all of our minds as well. Ultimately the goal of all learning is to draw us back to humble dependence on the source of knowledge, God himself. True knowledgeknowledge that begins and ends with Godwill humble us, because when we finally begin to understand who God is, we will begin to realise how much we dont understand in the first place. And yet, in His grace, God promises that even though we may only know in part today, there will be a day when we will know him as we have been fully known. And when we know him this way, when we know the love of Christ both mentally and experientially, we will finally be transformed into the image bearers hes destined us to be. https://www.thegospelcoalition.org//why-we-pursue-knowled/ (adapted) #classicalchristianeducation #classicalchristian #classicalchristianschool #classicalchristianhomeschool #classicalchristianhomeschooling #classicalchristianacademy #classicalchristiancommunity #classicalchristianeducator #classicalchristiancurriculum #classicalchristianity

17.01.2022 Narration is a simple and elegant teaching tool containing two parts: 1. The exposure of students to rich content, most often a passage of a living book. 2. The requirement of students to tell back that content in a connected format.... Narrating is an art, like poetry-making or painting, because it is there, in every child’s mind, waiting to be discovered, and is not the result of any process of disciplinary education. A creative fiat calls it forth. Let him narrate; and the child narrates, fluently, copiously, in ordered sequence, with fit and graphic details, with a just choice of words, without verbosity or tautology, so soon as he can speak with ease. (Home Education, ch. 9 The Art of Narrating) Narrating is natural to human beings, just like poetry writing or painting, singing, dancing, or running. It is a natural endowment of God, one of the most basic and fundamental tools of the mind itself. Narration is part and parcel of human nature. Knowledge is not assimilated until it is reproduced." That's exactly what narrating asks of the student. 15.01.2022 Principles of Classical Pedagogy Repetitio Mater Memoriae - Repetition Is the Mother of Memory We are doing a big and brave thing, my friends. We are studying and attempting to implement a kind of education that is ancient, beautiful, complex, but simple. Most of us are newly acquainted with this tradition, yet, we have the task of bringing it to life for our students and our children. How do we do that? I think there are some answers for us in the principle of repetitio mate...r memoriae, repetition is the mother of memory. The idea of memory is more than just memorizing a poem or a Bible verse. Memory is about knowing things by heart. Memory is about creating a storehouse of things we can draw on when most needed. .. Kids, and adults, need to drill information before it moves from short-term to long-term storage. We must recite, write down, and work until the information becomes second nature. .. What are the phrases we can repeat to ourselves over and over again that communicate some greater truth and create a path our lives and minds can walk down each time we face a given situation? https://scholegroups.com/using-the-eight-principles-of-cla/ #classicalchristianeducation #classicalchristian #classicalchristianschool #classicalchristianhomeschool #classicalchristianhomeschooling #classicalchristianacademy #classicalchristiancommunity #classicalchristianeducator #classicalchristiancurriculum #classicalchristianity
15.01.2022 What lies at the core of an authentically Christian education? There are all sorts of answers to this question, and parents and educators alike may ultimately disagree on their final answer. But if you were to ask a learned German pastor called Martin Luther who lived five hundred years ago, the answer is clear: a Christ-centered liberal arts education that prepares its students to interpret scripture, read widely, think deeply, and live wisely all in service to Jesus Christ.... Luther’s view of a robust Christian education doesn’t begin with practical skills that may be useful for a job one day. Nor is it reducible to an exclusive study of the Bible and Christian doctrine. Rather, Luther sees the long-term value in training students in the tools of learning, the liberal arts, so that they might go on to be wise and prudent students of the Bible and other fields of knowledge helpful for leading a flourishing life on earth. Through rigorous training in the liberal arts, including reading scripture in the original languages, Luther believes that families seeking to raise their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord will bear much fruit. https://educationalrenaissance.com//why-luther-believed-c/ #classicalchristianeducation #classicalchristian #classicalchristianschool #classicalchristianhomeschool #classicalchristianhomeschooling #classicalchristianacademy #classicalchristiancommunity #classicalchristianeducator #classicalchristiancurriculum #classicalchristianity
15.01.2022 What is the purpose of education? (Slide 1 of 2) Responses, of course, will vary. Getting into college, fulfilling career dreams, or becoming a key contributor to the public sphere might be a few of the answers you hear. Those accomplishments are all fine and good, but they set a very low bar. ... If we step outside of our current historical moment and listen to the wisdom of the past, we might find a healthier alternative. For thousands of years, figures like Plato, Cicero, ...Augustine, and C.S. Lewis have carried the torch for a different kind of education: the formation of the soul. When our aim is set squarely upon training up well-formed and virtuous souls, all else will start to fall into place. With this end in mind, we can cast aside the low bar of mere academic achievement, and push our children to reach towards a higher calling and more appropriate standard. 14.01.2022 Classical Christian education offers Biblical integration throughout all subject areas. At a Classical Christian school Biblical integration is not simply Bible class and chapel, but teachers implement sacramental practices in their classrooms such as prayer, worship, service, and scripture memorization. .. Classical Christian teachers teach under the umbrella that all truth is Gods truth, and to study the creation that God redeems in the resurrection of His son Jesus Ch...rist. Such Biblical integration in Science, Maths, History, etc, develops intelligent men and women prepared to fulfill what Jesus prayed to His Father in John 17, As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. Classical Christian education offers personal discipleship of the student by their teacher who prays for and exhorts them in the way they should go. The trivium, Biblical integration, and personal discipleship enable students to love the Lord with both their mind and soul as they go out into the world and seek the welfare of the city in which they live. https://westsideacademy.org #classicalchristianeducation #classicalchristian #classicalchristianschool #classicalchristianhomeschool #classicalchristianhomeschooling #classicalchristianacademy #classicalchristiancommunity #classicalchristianeducator #classicalchristiancurriculum #classicalchristianity

14.01.2022 Christian education in essence is the relating of the faith to the totality of life. So I want to highlight here three simple ways in which a Christian education enables us to relate Christ and His Lordship to the world around us. Slide I of III - Education and Worldview Everyone has a worldview whether they have thought it through in detail or not, because we are all religious beings, and we each have an interconnected set of beliefs and assumptions through which we look at ...life. These belief sets, in turn, shape our approach to everything we do, including how we educate. As a consequence there is no such thing as a neutral education. Education will be done in terms of one worldview or another. Education that simply leaves students with certain information about aspects of reality and offers no coherence and relationship between them, offers no meaning. We can discover meaning in the world (even when we deny the source of that meaning) because everything is related to everything else by design. Everything in reality that can be studied by a student is meaning because it points beyond itself to its origin, the eternal Word of God, Jesus Christ. The Christian view of reality asserts at the outset the creative work of God. There are many aspects of creation that are studied in school for example the arithmetical, physical, biological, sensitive, logical, historical/cultural, lingual, social, economic, aesthetic, juridical, moral, and so forth. But the central question is, how do these relate to each other? What gives them meaning? In biblical faith, none of these aspects of our experience exist by themselves or for themselves, but are coherently interwoven in mutual relationship, pointing toward each other and beyond themselves to their origin. The biblical picture of the world has huge implications for education. God has created everything in relation to himself, so nothing can be understood fully and truly except in relation to Him. #classicalchristianeducation #classicalchristian #classicalchristianschool#classicalchristianhomeschooling #classicalchristianacademy #classicalchristiancommunity #classicalchristianeducator
13.01.2022 What is the purpose of education? Slide 2 of 2 A proper education should be something that is accessible to all. Our educational goals, then, must be aligned with that principle. Some students, due to nature or circumstance, will not master calculus and write beautiful poetry, even if they put forth the utmost effort. Does this make them failures? Only if your ultimate goal is academic achievement. Not everyone is equipped with the abilities to reach the same level academica...lly, but all people are capable of striving towards virtue and self-improvement. An education that believes the soul, rather than the mind, is of primary importance and can offer success to all of its students. You may be thinking that goals focused on the soul and virtue will inevitably lead to a lowering of our academic standards. You may even think that the sort of education I lay out here necessitates that we devalue academics. I believe that the opposite is true. When good grades are the goal, they are only capable of leaving a student either arrogant or broken. When grades are a tool, they might be the very thing that pushes a student to strive for excellence in all of life. This is an essential part of forming the soul, as well as preparing students for adulthood. But we must see it as that: a part. Academic growth is indeed one important goal of education, but it can never be the primary one. 11.01.2022 Classical educators have always emphasized the importance of mastering the masters. Classical education is the cultivation of wisdom and virtue through the study of the liberal arts and great books. 11.01.2022 Until a hundred years ago, Christians were in the forefront of all cultural institutions shaping politics, business, philosophy, science, literature, music and art. The reasons for the decline of Christian influence are complex and varied, but the abdication of Christians in the field of education is a major contribution. In 1961, Harry Blamires could write, There is no longer a Christian mind. Since 1961, I am glad to say, there has been a good deal of ground regained, bu...t nothing approaching what was once held. 10.01.2022 Integration of Learning - The classical world sought for centuries for an integrating principle of all that is and all that can be known. They called this principle, the Logos. Classical Christian Education integrates all teaching in Christ. He is the logos that binds every subject in a universal harmony, makes sense of all things, and lifts learning and knowledge to the realm of eternal meaning. He is the creator of the orderly universe and the Word who explains all wor...ds. He is the sun of the solar system, giving order and meaning to the planets, and making them knowable in His light. In Him are contained all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. To integrate is to honor the nature of each subject or science and to rightly order each subject in its relations to the other subjects. https://www.circeinstitute.org/principles-classical-educati #classicalchristianeducation #classicalchristian #classicalchristianschool #classicalchristianhomeschool #classicalchristianhomeschooling #classicalchristianacademy #classicalchristiancommunity #classicalchristianeducator #classicalchristiancurriculum #classicalchristianity
10.01.2022 As we contemplate raising and educating our children, many of us have been forced to ask ourselves what we wish to pass on to our children. How do we nurture them in the midst of all the confusion, doubt and conflict of this modern world? Is there any place of rest and refugeany place of tranquility and strength? Education is that vast undertaking of passing on the wisdom and knowledge of one generation to another. It involves discovery, but also instruction; it is cultural transmission. With our present culture undergoing so much flux, it is no surprise to find that education is in a state of tumult too. For the parent looking for a school to aid in this task of cultural transmission, it is often a bewildering affair. - An Introduction to Classical Education: A Guide for Parents Classical Academic Press, 2004
09.01.2022 Those of us in classical education are taking our cues from a time before the party began. Our experiences are all similar: we have not found the wholesome food we need in the present; we have been entertained but not fed, amused but not instructed. We have gone, therefore, to another place, not too far off, but still forgotten by most. We have gone back to the well-walked path of the tried and proventhe classical method of education. It has never really disappeared, it just became quite fragmented and diffused, with parts like ruins in modern schools and colleges. It was eclipsed as the reigning model only about a hundred years ago after reigning for over a thousand. - An Introduction to Classical Education: A Guide for Parents Classical Academic Press, 2004
08.01.2022 The Trivium - Part 2 I hope you will find it refreshing to discover that the method of classical education is simple yet profound, like so many great ideas from the wheel to the umbrella. Its basic philosophy is to teach children in the ways they naturally want to be taught, despite not always knowing it. Put another way, classical educators teach children what they want to know when they want to know it. ... When children are astonished with the human tongue, we teach them language and grammar. When children are ready to challenge every assumption, we teach them logic. When students are yearning to express themselves with passion, we teach them rhetoric. To be sure, children did not discover this means of education on their own; rather it appears that it was parents who discovered it and the children merely ratified it. 06.01.2022 We are committed to the life of the mind. But as Christian educators we know that a student is not a disembodied mind, but a person with a soul and a heart. We can never teach a mind only, or a heart; we are always teaching a person as a whole. Character has always been a chief goal of classical education. Education and study is a part of Christian discipleshipan expression of loving God with all our heart, mind and strength. The end of learning is to repair the ruins of ou...r first parents by regaining the knowledge of God aright, and out of that knowledge to love Him, to imitate Him, to be like Him, as we may the nearest by possessing our souls of true virtue, which being united to the heavenly grace of faith makes up the highest perfection. Christians should see that all knowledge is in an ultimate sense knowledge of God Himself and an attempt to reverse the curse and head back to Eden where we can be closer to God and become more like Him. That is, christians face frankly the reality of sin in education and see all knowledge as a means of knowing God and in so doing attaining true virtue. From this perspective, then, education entails ongoing repentance and spiritual war. Since the fall of Adam this has been the christian task and no less so in education. Students, therefore, need guidance, correction, training and rebuke, just as they need encouragement, commendation and praise. They need academic discipleship. To this end, classical christian educators cannot simply teach subjects, they must teach students made in the image of God. As teachers, they are also shepherds. 05.01.2022 As a monk and professor living during the late Middle Ages, it isn’t much of a surprise that Luther would be familiar with the liberal arts tradition. He, himself, received a liberal arts education. With this educational backdrop in mind, Luther cautions us that the greatest asset of any society is not its physical infrastructures or technological developments, but the minds, hearts, and souls of its members. And the tried and true method for cultivating the intellectual, mor...al, and spiritual capacities in a person is the liberal arts tradition. Through equipping students to be exceptionally literate, charitable thinkers, careful reasoners, cogent writers, and eloquent speakers, they are prepared to navigate the complex questions that late modern era brings to bear on us all: Who am I? Why do I exist? Does God exist? How do we know? What is truth and where can it be found? How do I lead a fulfilling life? What are the benefits and perils unlocked by technology? For a person to flourish on the individual level, and society to flourish on a community level, educators must provide students with the tools to answer these questions. 05.01.2022 The only real sin in many modern schools is to disagree with the notion that everyone determines his own truth and his own morality. As you can imagine and probably know, Christians and their viewpoints (creation, fall, redemption) are not generally appreciated (unless of course, they keep silent and just follow along). This relativism has given rise to egalitarianismthat doctrine that no one can really be superior to anyone else (which makes sense when there are no universal standards). Egalitarianism in turn has resulted in grade inflation, the lowering of academic standards (so everyone can get an A) and a hesitancy to recognize outstanding achievement. Parental authority, too, has ebbed considerably.- An Introduction to Classical Education: A Guide for Parents Classical Academic Press, 2004
04.01.2022 Principles of Classical Pedagogy Jingles, Songs and Chants Jingles, Songs and Chants come into the curriculum because we are trying to cause our students to honestly remember something. 03.01.2022 What exactly is Socratic dialogue and why is it such a powerful tool? Socratic teaching is "question-driven instruction. It derives from the Socratic dialogues, conversations in which Socrates discusses grand questions or big ideas with various mentees as recorded by Plato. When Socrates engages in dialogue with this interlocutor, he does so via one-on-one conversation. In some dialogues, that person changes from time to time. When that happens, however, Socrates always cont...inues the conversation with just one person at a time. He turns his attention, and thus the conversation, to the new interlocutor. This one-on-one approach is difficult, of course, for today’s teacher, especially for the instructor who has a whole classroom full of students, as in a traditional school setting. At the heart of Socratic teaching are four convictions: 1. Truth exists. 2. Truth is knowable. 3. Truth can be discovered. 4. Truth is ultimately one, in the sense that all things fit together into a harmonious symphony of being. Socrates was confident Truth can be known but he knew that it is hard to see it and that we spend most of our time living in error. So he developed a means by which truth can be perceived called dialectic thought. In the simplest sense, dialectic thought examines a thought in order to remove contradictions and inconsistencies. This is what Socrates refers to when he famously says, The unexamined life is not worth living, as recorded in the Apology. When inconsistencies of thought are examined and then removed, individuals can move forward to new insights, often using analogies and comparisons from what they already know. Socrates asks questions that help his interlocutor recognise the contradictions and inconsistencies in his own thoughts. If the student is willing to see what Socrates shows him, then he will say those magic words: I don't know. He has reached what Plato calls metanoia, the Greek word for repentance. It means "a change of mind." The person who accepts his own ignorance, Socrates argues, is prepared to see the truth. #classicalchristianeducation

The reformers retained the interest in studying classical languages and literature revived by the Renaissance; the great reformers were themselves learned, classically-educated men. It is this progressive form of education that we have all received making our knowledge and awareness of classical education limited. It is our progressive educations that make us think of the classical approach as foreign and noveleven though the classical model has reigned for centuries and the progressive mo...del is the novelty. The scattered stones of classical education are present in contemporary schools and can still be seen by a trained eye.
