25.01.2022 My latest finished project a 75mm metal hand painted Hun Warrior from the 4th-5th C. No one knows exactly where the Huns came from. Some believe they originated from a nomad people who terrorized China during the Qin Dynasty and during the later Han Dynasty. Other historians believe the Huns originated from Kazakhstan, or elsewhere in Asia. The Huns were nomadic warriors who terrorized much of Europe and the Roman Empire in the 4th and 5th centuries A.D. They were impressive ...horsemen known for their astounding military achievements. As they plundered their way across the European continent, the Huns acquired a reputation for being ruthless, indomitable savages. By the 5th century, they had amassed an enormous army made up of cavalry and infantry troops from various backgrounds and settled in the Great Hungarian Plain in eastern Europe. The most infamous Hun beiing "Attila" who raided and plundered his way around the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. He finally came to his end not by dying a warriors death in battle but by choking on his own blood/vomit while in a drunken stupor! Without the ruthless Attila, the Hun Empire fell apart and was no longer a major threat. https://classicminiatures.com.au//product/75mm-hun-warrior/

24.01.2022 Hi all, just finished a 75mm Mongol Warrior painted as my version of the Mongol General 'Subutai', Genghis Khan is reported to have called him one of his four "dogs of war" Subutai (11751248) was a general and important military strategist for Genghis Khan and Ögedei Khan. He directed more than 20 campaigns and won 65 pitched battles, during which he conquered or overran more territory than any other commander in history as part of the expansion of the Mongol Empire. Subu...tai was a major innovator in the art of war. In the invasions of China, Russia, and Europe, he routinely coordinated large forces often separated by huge distances. His manouvering was designed to mislead his foes and strike them from unexpected directions. Subutai was a master at creating divisions within the enemy ranks and surprising them. The terrifying Mongol reputation, combined with highly effective spy networks that spread unrest, as well as bribes to important local leaders, hindered his opponents from effectively uniting and fighting at their full capacity. Subutai was one of the first Mongol generals, alongside Genghis Khan, who realized the value of engineers in siege warfare. Even in field battles he made use of siege engines, in the first recorded use of artillery bombardments against an enemy army to disrupt their resistance while simultaneously attacking them. Similar to the creeping artillery barrage of World War I, used to soften and disrupt enemy lines right before an attack. He fought in a decisive and fluid manner where heavy firepower was used to create openings for rapid cavalry charges with deep formations. Subutai would disperse Mongol forces along a wide frontage and rapidly converge to decisive points (like Napoleon) to defeat the enemy in detail. Subutai's methods were effectively used to completely crush the enemies will to fight. He has been credited as the first general to operate campaigns using the modern organizational methods of command and control. Although Subutai had devastated the armies of Russia, Georgia, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, and Latin Constantinople in a series of one-sided campaigns, Western military leaders, historians, and theorists completely ignored him until the 20th century! Even at 71 years old Subutai was in charge of the campaign against the Chinese Song dynasty. After a long and illustrious life aiding the expansion of the Mongol Empire, Subutai returned to Mongolia after the Song campaign in 1248, dying at his home in the vicinity of the Tuul River (near modern Ulaanbaatar) at the age of 72. 23.01.2022 Not really miniatures, but a bit of medieval Fun :)

22.01.2022 Roman Tribune of 'Legio II Adjutrix Iterum Pia Fidelis'. In 94-95AD Publius Aelius Hadrianus served as aTribune in this legion, he later became 'Emperor Hadrian' (117-138AD).

22.01.2022 Hi all, latest finished project a 60mm metal alloy figure of 'Austrian Knight Albert von Pranckh' 14th century. For sale at www.classicminiatures.com.au. Pranckh is the name of an ancient Austrian noble family descending from Pranckh Castle, near Saint Marein bei Knittelfeld in the former March and later Duchy of Styria. It first appeared in documents dated 1135. They were knights of the free nobles of Feistritz-Traisen, which subsequently, under Adalram von Waldeck, a desce...ndant of the Aribonids, founded the Augustinian Abbey of Seckau in 1140. It is one of the oldest families in Austria still present today. The continuous succession of the family begins in 1242 with Ulrich von Pranckh. In 1298 the marriage between Friedrich von Pranckh and heiress Anna von Pux, descendant of the 'Saint' Countess Hemma von Gurk was officiated. Anna von Pux brought to the marriage her coat of arms, estates in Styria and Carinthia and the future ruling seat of the family, the castle of Pux, located near Teufenbach. However the ruling seat was not moved to Pux until 1425. A different part of the family did remain in St. Marein, which saw increased invasions of the Turks during these times they however did not dare to attack the castle of Pranckh! The burial helmet of the family of Pranckh is one of the most famous crested medieval bucket helmets, the only other existing specimen is the one from the Black Prince of Canterbury. The helmet was likely to be used during tournaments, as its additional front reinforcements suggest. It presumably belonged to Albert von Pranckh, who carried an almost identical helmet in his coat of arms, and dates back to the first half of the 14th century. The crest shows a golden pair of buffalo horns, embellished with silver outer ridges, covered in leather. Following a crusade, it was donated to the Abbey of Seckau, where it hung with two funerary hatchments over the family crypt of Pranckh. In 1878 it was acquired for the imperial collection in Vienna and is currently on display at the armoury of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

21.01.2022 A 75mm, metal alloy and hand painted Ancient Greek Hoplite with a distinctive scorpion emblem on his shield, ready for display! The sting of a scorpion is terrifically painful, causing profuse sweating, intense thirst, great agitation, muscle spasms, convulsions, swollen genitals, slow pulse, irregular breathing, and death. The fear factor of the dread scorpion was exploited by many ancient Greek hoplite soldiers who opted to paint scorpion figures on their shields to terrify... their foes. https://classicminiatures.com.au//75mm-greek-hoplite-with/

21.01.2022 Making a Classic Miniature Some pics showing the steps of making a metal cast figure and the painting process to the final miniature. First off I melt down some metal alloy, then pour the molten metal into a mould. There is a bit of an art to getting a good cast, but the great thing about metal is if I am not happy with how it turned out I just throw the not so good ones back in the pot to remelt :)... After cleaning up a good cast of the figure I stick it on a foam block ready for painting, this is so you do not have to hold the actual figure while painting, but grip the base block. I then apply an undercoat, once dry I start applying the base colours, I am pretty untidy and messy at this stage (can't colour between the lines LOL). I gradually build up the colours and start on tidying up the details (starting to colour between the lines Haha). With this figure I have applied bright strong colours and have not inked, blended or weathered it for a realistic look as it is a 'traditional metal toy soldier' look with a finish of High Gloss. Hope some found this interesting :)

21.01.2022 Latest finished project. 80mm Viking Warrior 9th-10th C. Metal cast and exquisite sculpting, a pleasure to paint :)

20.01.2022 Hi all, latest finished project a 60mm diorama depicting a "Saxon Noble challenging a Viking Earl 10th C". Metal, Hand Painted. For sale @ www.classicminiatures.com.au From 865 to 1066, England faced repeated attacks from Scandinavian 'Viking' warriors. The Anglo-Saxons themselves had invaded the area and settled there in the 5th and 6th centuries, having travelled by sea from southern Scandinavia, northern Germany and parts of the Netherlands. ... At the time of their arrival, what is now England was divided into a number of British Welsh-speaking kingdoms, which retained some influences from the Roman Empire, which had withdrawn from Britain in the early 5th century. The Anglo-Saxons conquered many of those kingdoms, establishing many of their own, including the important kingdoms of Mercia, Kent, Northumbria, the East Angles and the West Saxons. Although the term Anglo-Saxons is used as a general term for these peoples today, it was only in the late 9th century, with the beginnings of the unification of England, that the idea of Anglo-Saxons was used to create a sense of common identity in the face of the Viking invaders. There was a recognized kingdom of the Danes, which probably included most of, if not all modern Denmark, together with parts of south-east Norway, southern Sweden and northern Germany, but the term Danes was also used as a general term for all Scandinavians. Similarly the term Northmen is sometimes used specifically to mean Norwegians, but again is more often used as a general term. Often they are described in a more general sense as Danes, Northmen, heathens, pagans, foul men or even simply pirates. These are the people that we know today as Vikings. Early Viking raids were mostly carried out on a small scale, targeting coastal monasteries and trading centres in search of loot, and fleeing quickly. Both the size and frequency of such raids seem to have increased dramatically over time, and from the 830s onwards Anglo-Saxon, Irish and Frankish sources all report independently the presence of large Viking fleets in Britain, Ireland and western Europe. These fleets numbered hundreds of ships, and thousands of men. The Viking raids would see another escalation in England in 865, with the arrival of what the Anglo-Saxons called a 'micel here', or great raiding army. This campaigned for years at a time, conquering and eventually settling the kingdoms of East Anglia and Northumbria, and a large part of the kingdom of Mercia. Only the kingdom of the West Saxons held out, but even their King Alfred ruling from 87199, later known as the Great, would be forced into hiding before re-emerging to inflict a decisive defeat on the Vikings. Cheers Craig

19.01.2022 60mm Tin Alloy hand painted Crusader Knight. You can probably tell I love the medieval stuff :) The reason for the middle eastern crusades was a war between Christians and Moslems which centered around the city of Jerusalem. The City of Jerusalem held a Holy significance to the Christian religion. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem commemorated the hill of crucifixion and the tomb of Christ's burial and was visited by Christian Pilgrims. ... Even though for 400 years the spread of Islam had diminished Christianity in the middle east, parts of Eastern Europe and was making inroads into the Byzantine Empire, the Saracen Caliphs that held Palestine and Jerusalem usually pursued an enlightened policy toward the pilgrims, even encouraging them as a source of revenue. But in the 11th Century the Seljukian Turks wrested most of the Caliphs Asian possessions from them. And in 1065 Jerusalem was taken by the Turks and 3,000 Christians were massacred, churches were destroyed or used as stables and unlike the previous rulers, pilgrims were mistreated. The Turks had been making constant advances in the East, and were now threatening Constantinople itself. The Greek emperor (Alexius Comnenus) sent urgent letters to the Pope, asking for aid against the infidels, representing that, unless assistance was extended immediately, the capital with all its holy relics must soon fall. All these actions aroused a storm of indignation throughout Europe and awakened the desire to rescue the Holy Land from the grasp of the "infidel." Starting a chain of events which contributed to the cause of the first crusade. The first crusade was successfull and the 'Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem' lasted for almost 200 years (1099-1291). Though it lost Jerusalem in 1187 after the Battle of Hattin to Saladin, the 'Latins' re established in Acre and survived until 1291 when it was destroyed by the Egyptian Mamluks. All up there were 9 crusades to the middle east. Throughout their history some were successfull, most were failures. Figure for sale at www.classicminiatures.com.au

17.01.2022 Just completed an 80mm Eastern European Slavic warrior 11th-13th C. Metal hand painted :) According to historical records, the Slavic homeland would have been somewhere in central Europe, possibly along the southern shore of the Baltic Sea, its precise location is debated by archaeologists and historians. Over the centuries Slavic culture was heavily influenced by the Sarmatian culture from the east, and by the various Germanic cultures in the west.... These ancient warriors are described as being unusually tall and strong, Slavic warriors typically used a wide range of weapons. As the Slavs expanded they began using combined arms tactics, with archers, cavalry and infantry working in unison. Their armies used speed to their advantage and often employed ambushes, flanking assaults and guerilla tactics. They learned how to take fortified cities using siege weapons from the Byzantines and learned cavalry tactics from the steppe nomads. In the North they learned to use Viking style long ships, and even raided Scandinavia giving them a taste of their own medicine! The courage of these warriors and their willingness to die to protect their land were prominent character traits of every Slavic warrior. The ferocity of their response to any attackers made people think twice before attempting to attack them again. Beginning in the 9th century, the Slavs gradually converted to Christianity (both Byzantine Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism). By the 12th century, they were the core population of a number of medieval Christian states: East Slavs in the Kievan Rus', South Slavs in the Bulgarian Empire, the Kingdom of Croatia, Banate of Bosnia and the Grand Principality of Serbia, and West Slavs in the Great Moravia, the Kingdom of Poland, Duchy of Bohemia and Principality of Nitra. The ancient Slavs rose from relative obscurity to becoming one of the great forces of the world primarily due to their expansion from the 6th to 8th centuries AD and their stubborn ability to hold these lands throughout the ages. 17.01.2022 Hi all, finished a 54mm metal alloy figure of a Knight of 'The Order of the Sword Brethren' holding their Banner. For sale at www.classicminiatures.com.au. The Livonian Knight order, Brothers of the Sword, (alternative names of the Order include Christ Knights, Swordbrothers, Sword Brethren, and The Militia of Christ of Livonia) was a German knight order founded in Livonia (modern day Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia) by Bishop Albert of Riga in 1202 for the purpose of conquest ...and Christianization of the Baltic lands. The knights were organized similarly to the older Teutonic Knights. Their main headquarters were based at Fellin (Viljandi) in present-day Estonia, where the walls of the Master's castle still stand today. Other strongholds included Wenden (Csis), Segewold (Sigulda) and Ascheraden (Aizkraukle). In 1236 the knights were severely defeated by the Lithuanians and Semigallians at the Battle of Schaulen (Saule). As a result they merged in 1237 with the Teutonic Order, but they continued to function in all respects (rule, clothing and policy) as an independant branch of the Teutonic Order, headed by their own Master (himself only subject to the Teutonic Order's Grand Master). After the secularization in 1525 of the Teutonic Order, they resumed complete independence. In 1558, Czar Ivan IV (the Terrible) of Russia invaded their territories, which were eventually partitioned between Russia, Poland, and Sweden. In 1561 the knights were disbanded; their grand master became the first duke of Courland under Polish suzerainty.

16.01.2022 Hi all, latest finished project 60mm metal alloy Knight. Painted up as German knight 'Hasso Johann von Bredow around 1290'. In the 12th-century (1147), a German knight with the name 'Arnold von Bredow' accompanied 'Albert the Bear' (Count of Anhalt and Duke of Saxony) during an eastern expansion into the lands of the Slavic Wends (modern day Brandenberg in Germany). Considered as pagans, the Wends were fair game for a 1147 'crusade'.... At the end of the war, diplomatic measures were successful, and an arrangement was established with the last of the Wendish princes of Brandenburg, 'Pribislav of the Hevelli', for Albert to secure this district when the prince died, which he did in 1150. Taking the title "Margrave in Brandenburg" (military commander), he pressed the "crusade" against the Wends, extended the area of his rule and encouraged German migration, established bishoprics under his protection, and so became the founder of the Margraviate of Brandenburg in 1157. Arnold Von Bredow got, as his share from the spoils of war, a few Slavic fishing villages. His sons married so cleverly that soon half of the Havelland region within Brandenberg was theirs - 31 villages. On the shield of the knight is the coat of arms of the von Bredows: a red assault ladder with golden (yellow) crossbars in a silver (white) field. The coat of arms symbolizes the ascension of the Bredows family to the highest nobility of Brandenburg. The Bredows were often on bad terms with each other and always badly in debt. Still they were able to manage the region of Havelland decisively for centuries. To this day there is a town called Bredow in the region.

14.01.2022 Have completed a diorama depicting a Roman Centurion addressing his legionnaires prior to going into battle some time in 1st C AD :) 54mm scale, metal alloy, very nice figures to paint! A Centurion was a professional officer of the Roman army after the Marian reforms of 107 BC. Centurions originally commanded a hundred men (a century) of around 80 legionaries, with the other 20 being servants and orderlies, but senior centurions commanded cohorts or took senior staff roles in... their legion. Centurions were held personally responsible for the training and discipline of the legionaries under their command, and they had a reputation for dealing out harsh punishment. The vine-stick was a symbol of the centurion's authority and the implement with which he meted out this punishment. Unlike Legionnaires, the Roman Centurions carried their swords (ensis) on their left side as a sign of distinction and carried the pugio (dagger) on the right, as the sidearm. Centurions received a much higher rate of pay than the average legionary and often had important social status and held powerful positions in society.

14.01.2022 54mm Golden Horde Mounted Warlord from the 14th C. Highly detailed metal alloy 'Miles Publius' figure and fun to paint! The Golden Horde were a group of settled Mongols who ruled over Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Moldova, and the Caucasus from the 1240s until 1502. The Golden Horde was established by Batu Khan, a grandson of Genghis Khan, and subsequently a part of the Mongol Empire before its inevitable fall. ... The Golden Horde's name "Altan Ordu," may have come from the yellow tents used by the rulers, but nobody is sure about the origin. The Golden Horde's justice system made life less violent and dangerous than before in medieval Eastern Europe. The Mongols took regular census counts and required regular tax payments, but otherwise left the people to their own devices so long as they did not try to rebel. Tamerlane (Timur) the founder of the Timurid Empire of Central Asia dealt the Golden Horde a crushing blow in 1395 through 1396, when he destroyed their army, looted their cities and appointed his own khan. The Golden Horde stumbled on until 1480, but it was never the great power it had been after Timur's invasion. In that year, Ivan III drove the Golden Horde from Moscow and established the nation of Russia. Remnants of the horde attacked the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland between 1487 and 1491 but were soundly thrashed. The final blow came in 1502 when the Crimean Khanate a Turkic statewith Ottoman patronagesacked the Golden Horde's capital at Sarai. After 250 years, the Golden Horde of the Mongols was no more. 10.01.2022 Latest finished project a 60mm Spanish mounted arquebusier, 16th-17th Century. Metal hand painted by me :) In the early 16th century in Italy, soldiers armed with arquebuses (early form of a rifle) were put on horse's, behind the horsemen to provide fire support during cavalry raids, mounted arquebusiers started to gain popularity in other European countries also. Eventually there were independent units of mounted arquebusiers in most European armies of the time. These were ...small detachments that could easily "add fire" in the right place of the battle or arrange an unexpected raid on the marching enemy column. Early mounted arquebusiers probably fought mostly on foot due to the problems involved in using a #'matchlock firing system' from horse back and only used the horse to ride where needed in the battle. #(matchlock: a long length of smouldering rope soaked in saltpeter, which was the match to ignite the gunpowder to fire the weapon). Mounted use became easier with more widespread use of the *'wheellock firing mechanism' though much more expensive to manufacture. *(wheellock: a friction-wheel mechanism to cause a spark to ignite the gunpowder to fire the weapon). From the 1540's onward you see the mounted arquebusier slowly developing two separate branches. A mounted arquebusier that becomes a true light cavalryman, at best wearing a helmet and breastplate. And also heavy cavalry wearing a combination of mail and plate armour, armed with pistols. In Spain there were the Herreruelos and the Herguletiers (mounted arquebusiers). The Herreruelos were armed with pistols and heavily armoured, similar to German Reiters and other cuirassier types, while the Herguletiers (arquebusiers) were lighter, only about half of them wearing corselets, the rest leather, and were armed with a longer-range weapon. They all operated on foot as well as mounted. Mounted, both could play a similar role, operating on the front or flanks of men-at-arms or lancers, preparing and supporting attacks with their fire, but the herreruelos would be more likely to charge in themselves! Both types carried swords, and arquebusiers sometimes carried pistols as well as the arquebus. In the second half of the 17th century, they were replaced by the term 'dragoons' (mounted infantry). Similarly armed but they also carried, beside sword and arquebus, a mace and a small pick which could be used to tether the horse while the rider operated dismounted.

05.01.2022 Hi all, my finished project from the 'Napoleonic Wars', a 60mm 'Voltigeur' of the 8th Infantry Regiment Poland 1808-10. Metal, Hand Painted. www.classicminiatures.com.au The Voltigeurs were 'French' military skirmish units created in 1804 by Emperor Napoleon. Voltigeurs (English: "vaulters") were named after their originally conceived mode of operation: although they were foot soldiers, on the battlefield they were intended to jump onto the rear of cavalry horses to advance m...ore quickly! This proved unworkable and they were trained to be 'elite skirmishers', but they retained their original name. Voltigeurs formed an integral part of the Grande Armée's basic building blocks, the Line and Light infantry battalions. The voltigeurs were skilled at sharpshooting and received specific training in marksmanship, using cover and taking the initiative. Operating in loose formation, forming the skirmish line and screening the line battalion from the enemy. The Army of the 'Duchy of Warsaw' (Polish army) of that time was modelled after the French Napoleonic Army which resulted in some social tensions, but is generally credited with helpful modernization and useful reforms. Overall, the Polish units were reckoned by the French to be highly motivated and of high quality. Under Prince Józef Poniatowski the army participated in numerous wars on the side of Napoleonic France, including the War of the Fourth Coalition (18061807), Peninsular War, the War of the Fifth Coalition (primarily in the PolishAustrian War) of 1809, and in the War of the Sixth Coalition (in particular, in the French invasion of Russia) of 18121813. In the Russian campaign of 1812, the Polish units formed an entire corps (the V Corps) of the Grande Armée. The army sustained over 70% losses! At the battle of Leipzig in 1813, the Army suffered further heavy casualties , where Prince Poniatowski died. After this defeat, the Duchy was occupied by Napoleon's enemies. Much of the Army followed Napoleon back to France that year. Disorganized after Poniatowski's death, in 1814, the army was incorporated into the French Army, and ceased to exist. With the final defeat of Napoleon and after the 'Treaty of Fontainebleau' most of the Polish soldiers were given into the custody of the Russians!!

In March 1808, along with a Franco-Belgian unit they were deployed to Denmark. ... While in Denmark , the Spanish Peninsular War broke out on 2 May 1808. The Division returned to Spain, changed sides and fought with the British against Napoleon! Some Spanish troops did remain loyal to Napoleon and the "Joseph-Napoleon" regiment was formed, which fought in the Russian campaign of 1812. https://classicminiatures.com.au//54mm-grenadier-infantry/

01.01.2022 70mm European Soldier with Espadon completed!. Metal and hand painted. Early 16thC European soldier bearing a long, heavy, two-handed and two-edged espadon sword with a wavy blade capable of causing the most serious injuries. Veterans who fought in the forefront, had decent armor and received twice as much money. Such "sword masters" with one sweep of the weapon fled the enemy. But there were comparatively few of these soldiers "on double pay" - one among about thirty pikemen... and halberds. These swords represent the final stage in the trend of increasing size that started in the 14th century. In its developed form it acquired the characteristics of a polearm rather than a sword due to the large size and weight and therefore increased range and striking power. Consequently, it was not carried in a sheath but across the shoulder like a halberd. For sale @ https://classicminiatures.com.au//54mm-european-soldier-w/
