22.01.2022 Like them or loath them, the Romans knew how to mix it up.
16.01.2022 Haltern is a famous legionary fort in Germany, having been dug since the very late 19th century. Founded about 5 BC, it is still yielding interesting objects, such as this Julio-Claudian dagger and scabbard.
15.01.2022 Apart from the typo (altar, altar!), some good news coming out of Aswan in southern Egypt.
11.01.2022 My favourite mug is the black gloss one found here that had, scratched on the base, belongs to Pheidias (in Greek, of course). Story goes, back at the German dighouse, everyone thought it had been faked by the excavators as a prank. No, it is real!
06.01.2022 Oldest olive oil - The nearly 2,000 year old bottle filled with solidified olive oil from Pompeii (and carbonized bread on the left). Roman, 79 AD http://bit.ly/artifactsmuseum
03.01.2022 Shame this article gave only the broad Roman date range - the earliest depictions of barrels on river barges on Gallo-Roman reliefs are broadly late 2nd/3rd c AD. Interesting that oak was not used here.
