17.01.2022 The classing of the 2015 & 2016 drop Balmoral MLP/AMSEA trial is always full of highlights and one I look forward to yearly at Michael and Jane Craig’s ‘Tuloona’ just out of Harrow Vic. With the classing and measurement of every merino trait possible per ewe over the last six & five years, the data accuracies are maximised letting us identify just what part of a ewe’s life typifies the most ideal for all-trait predictability. This in turn can only build up confidence and subsequent accuracies within the ASBV system particularly, including the important added bonus of Adult trait results hence MLP - Merino Lifetime Performance Trial.

07.01.2022 It’s been a couple of years gap since my last ewe hogget classing at Netallie Station just this side of Wilcannia NSW for obvious reasons. Great to be back in the classing race to witness these, just on one year old ewe weaners, in absolute top order exhibiting great carcass traits and correct fibre density. Add to that no neighbouring pharkin’ dorper intrusion thus making it a perfect couple of days! The fibre pictured hitting 60mm all day at only four months growth - a cred...it to the McClure family’s management combined with favourable rainfall events and genetics. Poll rams here are predominantly selected by yours truly across a few studs as to not let any form of quality fall by the wayside and helped by a realistic budget. This is essential as opposed to the awkward term ‘station order’ ram consignment sent to the bush that really only deserve a one way ticket to the Middle East. Structural soundness and correct density is as important here as it is anywhere in the state. Genetics: Pimbena, Lucernbrae, Ramsgate, Borung & Mernowie. Good to catchup Jeremy, James, Kimbo and Pete!

03.01.2022 There’s a creeper out there at the minute with the possibilities of the Steining/Freeze Branding technique for the removal of excessive skin from lambs being categorised as unmulesed!! A total insult to those enterprises, stud and commercial, that have genetically bred there way into Merino’s that require no mulesing whatsoever and haven’t done so for up to fifteen years! One of my favourite progressive clients is also fed up and making a stand by advertising the same fact t...hat there really are genetics of choice to make the switch quite simple. More to come but please share the bejingos out of this for general awareness - there’s some politics involved here too of course....

03.01.2022 The SA Sire Evaluation Field Day at McPiggery’s Marama property near Karoonda can only be deemed as a great success. Around 100 visitors on the day inspected the 2019 drop Trial progeny and as a bonus the 2020 drops were penned as well - no mean feat can I add!! Much of the credit goes to the backbone of this enterprise, Duane Symonds and capable staff. The previous day to the Field Day saw a full day of drafting and partial setup in readiness for what turned into an informat...ive day to follow. Special mention to Anna Cameron as coordinator of all things Trial! Many Classings’ clients or studs that feature in Classic Ram Sales have entered in both drops here with all featuring well in specific traits. Calcookara, Caroonboon, Challara, Flairdale, Gunallo, Leahcim, Pepperwell, Ridgway and Wallaloo Park. Amongst many accolades, the Pepperwell sire in the 2020 drop lamb progeny had the greatest body weight gain between two measurements. There are definitely no winners or losers with these trials as most studs excel with certain traits but not all. Those who do feature well across many traits do enjoy some semen sale success or subsequent sire progeny recognition. 02.01.2022 After getting out of jail with a successful sale in Feb 2020 encompassing serious drought, Lorelmo Poll blitzed it this week with a $500 lift in average to $2,580 with another 20 polls offered and a $7,000 top gong amongst a classic season. 80 sold from 80 offered. That top price claimed at Lot 6 and selling to our Kangaroo Island clients, Gerard and Michelle Glynn - Cygnet River S.A. who eyeballed the poll on AuctionsPlus and was reassured that on sale day he looked the good...s including GFW% 126 @ 17.4u. Six top flockies went to S.E. clients Peter and Tweet Andre - Kangaroo Inn S.A. and I also selected another 6 of the same oozing high quality for Brian Wilson near Ballarat Vic. (The Andre’s sold some of the good fibre this week to a top of 1680c greasy and all up averaged over $3,000/bale.) This stud is in great nick with high end quality fibre a given yet it’s the inherent meat traits that the Lorelmo genetic hosts that surprise most. The inbuilt twist and porky back ends ensure buyer confidence reflecting a genuine ‘dual purpose’ animal - an overused term quite often not connected to some boasting enterprises! ASBV’s are next on the agenda... All the best with the new arrival Mags and Ed!
