25.01.2022 Friday musings: Last night in Advanced Foundation we came into the studio with a new mindset. We imagined the studio is like a science lab and our class was an experiment. We gave ourselves permission to fail, not in an exam or performance context, however, in the context of studio practice. We experimented with how many pirouettes we could achieve, how high could we jump before we couldn’t hold our turnout. How high could we lift our legs while maintaining turnout and line.... If something didn’t work, as in we wobbled, couldn’t hold our balance etc. we adjusted ourselves and pulled back on the number of turns or the height of the jump. We gave ourselves permission to try our very best and know if the step didn’t come off it didn’t define us. All of the students responded really well and it really fostered an intrinsic motivation and a positive self efficacy. I’ve been reading a lot about intrinsic motivation and it’s benefits in students showing a ‘can do’ attitude in class and it was great to see the students embrace this concept and respond really well. From a teacher’s point of view, it was really rewarding to see the improvement. I hope all of our students come into class knowing they can do it and they achieve, and that the dance studio is a safe space to ‘give it a go’!

14.01.2022 The eisteddfod was cancelled on the weekend so we held our own eisteddfod at the studio. Everyone performed beautifully and placed first ! Our audience was fantastic and was able to critically reflect on the choreography and how it worked with the music. Great learning all round!
