01.01.2022 These strawflowers are native Australian flora that kindly grow in my garden. I see them every day as I harvest greens to eat and walk to and from the studio. Aside from living, loving and working on Wadawurrung country, I find myself riding (and recently paragliding over) other First Nations lands. This year, NAIDOC week flew past and I was in the depths of my own stuff and didn't stop to reflect, so I'm doing it now. And if you too missed it, I invite you to join me. This y...ear's theme was 'Always Was, Always Will We' recognising that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Now, I have only been an Aussie since 2016, but I'd be tripping if I didn't acknowledge that this land is now home. To wake to the magpie's call, smell the eucalpytus as I ride through the local forests, and to hear the kookaburra's laugh as I tend to my garden, are all wonderful parts of my day-to-day life. For a while now I have been reading, listening and opening myself up to Indigenous authors, podcasts and art. I'll admit, there have been times when I've been deeply uncomfortable as the history is so brutal and the pain so palpable, but I accept this as part of the learning process. I'll also admit that there has been a huge relief in simply accepting the fact that I know nothing and leaning into the available information. For anyone interested, I will be sending out a newsletter tomorrow that will include a few of the books I've been reading in an effort to give my time and energy to First Nation's voices.
