21.01.2022 FUN CASE FRIDAYS . Pippa's mum made an appointment straight away when she noticed Pippa's laboured breathing and she was acting abnormal. . When Pippa arrived, she was very distressed and guarding her mouth. After a light sedation we were able to examine her mouth and noticed a small green segment hidden amongst the inflammation in her mouth. Dr Kate was able to remove the foreign body using a set of tweezers. It turned out to be a 15cm long grass seed!... . 20.01.2022 On the theme of bad puns.... Here is a bad joke .............................................................. A woman brought a very limp into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the birds chest.... After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, "Im sorry, your , has passed away." "How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you havent done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something." The vet turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the s owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room. This condition is when soft tissue bulges through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. The soft tissue is often part of the intestine. The intestines actually dropped into his scrotum and if he was still you could see the normal rhythmic movement of the intestines moving through the skin of the scrotum. 19.01.2022 Ever wonder what the vets are looking at when they are looking under the microscope? These little critters are ear mites and have been been magnified x10. Joanne managed to diagnose them by swabbing the inside of the ear with a cotton tip and smearing the ear discharge onto a slide to view it under the microscope.... 16.01.2022 Little Basil presented to us on Friday morning for vomiting and inappetance. He received an anti-nausea injection and went home to be monitored. Even with the medication on board he continued to vomit which is very unusual. Due to it being a Friday, we got Basil back to the clinic to do some further work up before we shut for the weekend and boy are we glad we did! We didn't see anything on x-rays initially but the vets where sure they felt a mass in his abdomen. He receive...d "BIPS" which are small contrast media pellets that show up on xray easily. This allows us to see if they are able to be passed, this is done by taking an xray every couple of hours to see if they have began to move through the stomach and into the intestines. It was clear after the BIPS not moving, Basil had a forgin body. At 3pm on Friday afternoon, Dr Joy scrubbed up and began a Exploratory laparotomy and pulled out not one but THREE palm seeds that where unable to be passed through the intestines. Little Willow had a suspected Mammary tumour removed that took up 2 thirds of the left side of her chest! 14.01.2022 Did you know you can bring injured wildlife to the vets? . This little turtle dove was brought in to us as she was unable to fly. It appeared that another animal attacked her and pulled out a large amount of her primary and secondary feathers that she uses to fly with. . Dr Joy examined her and we preformed an x-ray on her wing to ensure she did not have any fractures. Dennis has had a rough couple of days, however he has made it through and even been featured in the Courier Mail On Wednesday afternoon, Dennis had an altercation with a brown snake in his yard. Unfortunately for Dennis, it is very rare for a dog to come away from an altercation with a brown snake without a bite. ... Brown Snake venom is deadly to our pets without veterinary treatment. Within an hour he started showing symptoms of blood in his urine and sudden weakness followed by collapse. We are glad to say Dennis is a fighter and after care at the wonderful QVS North Lakes facility, Dennis's family are very relieved and happy to have their little trouble maker home Moral of the story: Don't play with snakes! 05.01.2022 Meet Jax! He is a very brave boy who had a very uncommon surgery! (For us anyway). Jax was prone to Feline Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). It is not a specific disease, but rather a term used to describe the condition that can affect the bladder or urethra in cats. This means they are unable to urinate, which can be lethal to cats. Jax had developed stones in his bladder that blocked his urethra and he was unable to urinate, requiring general anaesthesia to remove these stone...s. Unfortunately, he then developed FLUTD numerous times over the past two years. Jaxs owners made the hard, yet important, decision to go ahead with the emergency surgery known as Perineal Urethrostomy. This consists of removing the penis and you exposing a wide section of urethra so they do not obstruct. He does not even mind if it isnt technically classified as food...... Eddies parents brought him in as they suspected he may have eaten a sock. We induced emesis and he produced 4 socks, a hair tie and possibly some stockings (by the looks of it)! They where named after the characters of the hit TV show Absolutely Fabulous. Fun fact from Ab Fab: We only recently learned from the parents of these two that on various occasions throughout the series, it is alluded to that Patsy was once transgender, having undergone a sex-change operation in Morocco in the 19...60s.
