25.01.2022 Did you know that in 1951/1952, our College community navigated through another poliomyelitis epidemic? Today we are celebrating two Old Collegians, Bobbie Cox ...(1940-1945) and Marjory Kroll (Bailey 1941-1944), who made significant contributions during this difficult time and beyond. Bobbie was a health professional in Townsville. Her work with polio-effected children at the peak of the 1951/1952 epidemic gave her vital knowledge of anatomy. She was later awarded the Order of Australia for her contribution to Physiotherapy in North Queensland. Bobbie is pictured in the second image. Marjory studied Physiotherapy and used her training to bring help and comfort to children who had been stricken with polio during the 1951/1952 epidemic, prior to the discovery of the Salk and Sabine vaccines. Marjory treated disabled children in both Brisbane and Toowoomba, and is pictured in the first image. What an impact these Old Collegians made! #shewill #shewillmakeanimpact #shewillshine #clayfieldarchives #CCOCA

20.01.2022 FUN FACT FROM THE ARCHIVES: In 1939 in our first QGSSSA athletics meet, our team consisted of mainly juniors and our senior tunnelling team used every available girl. But it was a proud moment when the team marched onto the field carrying the school banner for the first time.

19.01.2022 Congratulations to Susan Markwell (Class of 1982) on being recently recognised for her outstanding contribution to remote health and the wider nursing profession through her role with the Royal Flying Doctor Service. So inspiring! #sheis #sheismakinganimpact #sheisshining #letyourlightshine #CCOCA

If you do the PMSA would love to hear from you! A vacancy exists on the Clayfield College Council and the PMSA Board are looking for a qualified member of the Clayfield community to apply. Each PMSA school is governed by a School Council which is a committee of the PMSA Board. The Council is made up of the schools Principal as a non...-voting member, up to two PMSA Board members, and up to six independent School Council members appointed from the schools community. The PMSA Board delegates the responsibility for governance oversight, administration and performance to the School Council and the Principal reports to the Council. See the EOI in the link to the PMSA website below.

18.01.2022 EVERYDAY EXTRAORDINARY OLD COLLEGIANS: As well as giving a shout out to Old Collegians in business, were also proud to share some of our everyday extraordinary Old Collegians and what they get up to. Heres Emily Gilhome (CCOCA 2000) whos showing her wonderful musical and creative talent as owner and director of Oscar Production Company. Check out this heart-warmingly funny video she has produced because her artists are unable to perform during COVID times. This video is ...from a show called BOY&GIRL - a cabaret series that has run for the past eight years in Brisbane. The video was recently created featuring cast members from the last eight years. The show was due to appear at Brisbane Powerhouse in June but was cancelled due to COVID-19. Music captain at Clayfield in 2000, Emily started the Oscar Production Company in 2008 with the view to providing more opportunities for local artists. Emily has worked as a producer and director and have produced major productions in venues such as QPAC, Brisbane Powerhouse and The Tivoli, and for clients including Brisbane Festival and Queensland Government. #sheshines #shewill #CColdcollegians

15.01.2022 Well done Lilly Steinberg (class of 2017), we are very proud of you!

14.01.2022 FUN FACT FROM THE ARCHIVES: In 1942 after the bombing of Pearl Harbour, all schools were closed and students studied via correspondence. The American Army occupied Somerville House and the Clayfield College basement was transformed into an air raid shelter and trenches were dug. Medical authorities inspected Clayfield to take over during the War but plans were abandoned as there was no electricity in the building.

14.01.2022 AT HOME, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM: Old Collegian Isabelle Jardine (2019) plays her trumpet at her driveway at dawn. Among many Old Collegians who are talented musicians thanks to Clayfields amazing music program. Lest we forget.

13.01.2022 HERITAGE TRAIL DONATION: Thank you to both Di Kerr (past Head of Boarding) and Kathryn Searle (Head of Boarding) for their generous donation for the Old Collegians Heritage Trail sign outside the Old Turrawan Hospital, now the Clayfield College boarding house. Di and Kathryn, you’re our Honorary Old Collegians!!!

13.01.2022 Our extended Clayfield family came together last week for the commissioning of our seventh Principal, Dr. Andrew Cousins. The service paid tribute to our Colleg...es strong sense of connectedness, with representatives from all parts of our community playing a role in his official welcome. We look forward to Dr. Cousins leading our remarkable school into the future. I am committed to developing students who are reflective, bold and imaginative. For me, these three words provide such a powerful driver for educational success where we set goals for the future with clear reference to the past. Dr. Cousins #theywill #reflectiveboldimaginative #clayfieldfamily #letyourlightshine

13.01.2022 FUN FACT FROM THE ARCHIVES: The name Clayfield College was coined in 1906 when AW Rudds Boys School moved from Bonney Avenue to Bayview Terrace where Clayfield College now stands. The then boys school changed its name to Brisbane Boys College (BBC) in 1920 after being purchased by the PMSA. BBC moved to Toowong in 1931 and Clayfield College was re-established as a junior adjunct to Somerville House for girls and boys in kindergarten and primary - girls to 12 and boys to 10.

12.01.2022 SUPPORTING OLD COLLEGIANS' BUSINESSES: Following our very popular post last week about Kangaroo Island Source, we're very pleased to hear about some other Old Collegians' businesses. Please send us any information about your business or let us know about your friends business. Wed love to share it with the broader Clayfield College family. With Mother's Day this Sunday, we thought we'd give a shout out to 2008 Old Collegian Lauren McNamara's Let Minnow Café on Park Avenue..., Clayfield. Lauren and the team has some great Mother's Day deals including a range of takeaway brunch boxes and of course coffees and cakes and other delicious takeaway morsels. Lauren and her family decided to transform the well-known old aquarium on Park Avenue (heading down to Kalinga Park) into a cafe a few years ago. In naming the cafe, it seemed only fair that the building's previous life was honoured in this new venture. The family thought of the name Let Minnow Cafe (a minnow is a small fish), and from there the fishy puns began, which are unashamedly embraced throughout the cafe. Let Minnow is sun-filled and airy, with bursts of brightly coloured finishes and recycled-timber details. Throughout the space you will spot nods to the buildings history, from the custom canary-yellow minnow-print wallpaper to the tabletop terrariums with fake fish and the staff shirts branded with Just for the halibut and New squid on the block the original aquarium sign even runs along the cafes hallway. Amidst all this Covid-19 panic, the team at Let Minnow are trying their best to support the community. They are always looking for ways to improve the quality of service they provide, and with that, have decided to stay open for takeaways during the isolation period. Let Minnow has a large focus on community and family, and in these crazy times especially, those two are interchangeable. They're open from 6.30am everyday. Check out their Facebook page or website https://letminnowcafe.com.au/ and enjoy this little clip of Lauren. If you would like to share your story and your business with our Old Collegian community, please email [email protected] or message Old Collegians on Facebook. Remember, we are all connected.

11.01.2022 CHECK OUT THE CLAYFIELD COLLEGE HERITAGE TRAIL - THE GREEN AND WHITE STRIPES: In the chapel courtyard, youll find this sign celebrating the green and white stripes. 10.01.2022 LOOKING OUT FOR OUR OLD COLLEGIANS: What a wonderful initiative by thoughtful and caring Clayfield students.

10.01.2022 FUN FACT FROM THE ARCHIVES: The primary Andrews Cup competition was first played between Somerville House and Clayfield College in 1939 to encourage physical activity among young girls and a little bit of sister-school rivalry. Today, its one of the preeminent sporting competitions for girls in south-east Queensland.

10.01.2022 SUPPORTING OLD COLLEGIANS BUSINESSES: During this unprecedented and uncertain time, one practical thing we can all do is support Old Collegians, their families and their businesses. And were not just talking about those in Brisbane. Old Collegians run businesses all over Australia and the world that may appreciate a little extra support right now. Our first business in the spotlight is Kangaroo Island Source run by Old Collegian Kate Sumner (1992). Kate runs her farm-based... kitchen overlooking the picturesque town of Penneshaw after she fell in love with the pristine natural environment of Kangaroo Island. Kate developed a vision to create a food business that connected people with the authentic flavours and artisan food producers of Kangaroo Island. She has since earned herself the reputation as Kangaroo Islands most produce-driven chef. Kangaroo Island Source offers a range of gourmet products which are manufactured on Kangaroo Island in the Kangaroo Island Source Kitchen and many can be bought online. All ingredients are hand selected & supplied by local producers from Kangaroo Island. Products to die for include the Almond Dukka, Chilli Coriander Chutney (that goes with almost anything!!) and the Butter Chicken Spice Mix. Visit https://kangarooislandsource.com.au/shop/ to order online and make sure you mention youre an Old Collegian! Shes had a few visits from Old Collegians over the years and would always welcome more. If you would like to share your story and your business with our Old Collegian community, please email [email protected] or message Old Collegians on Facebook. Remember, we are all connected.

The news story is locked for non-subscribers, so this week, we highlight SARAH IRELAND. The One Girl CEO studied journalism at the University of Queensland after graduating from the University of Queensl...and. She was offered a position with Reuters as a journalist and, on the same day, as a volunteer with an international aid agency. She took the role in the aid agency. Since then, she has gone from being a first-responder in disaster zones to working in humanitarian outreach, international aid and the development sector. She has led emergency response teams in the Philippines, Iraq and in the Horn of Africa. Then as a Humanitarian Advocacy and Policy Adviser, she lobbied both Australian and overseas governments to increase foreign aid budgets and the intake of refugees, and to prioritise women and girls in their overseas aid programs. It was on the front line of disasters and crises where Ms Ireland witnessed the power of education, particularly for women. She now heads the girls education not-for-profit One Girl, which supports girls with educational opportunities in Sierra Leone and Uganda. Ms Ireland is a winner of Pro Bonos 2018 IMPACT 25 Awards and is currently the humanitarian representative on the Red Cross Australia Victorian International Humanitarian Law Advisory Committee.
