13.01.2022 Storm Burning This week Gangalidda and Garawa Rangers carried out storm burning, which is used as an effective control method of Rubber Vine - a Weed of Nationa...l Significance (WoNS). Rangers combine storm burning with other methods, such as chemical application, to maximise results for traditional country. A moderate intensity fire, when there is good soil moisture (after about 50mm rain), will provide the best initial results as the Rubber Vine plant is actively growing after a dormant dry season. The areas targeted for this year’s storm burning was country around Moungibi (Burketown) along the coast from the Albert River to Point Parker and around the Massacre Inlet area. Rangers apply fire through the use of a gel torch suspended underneath a helicopter which allows the rangers to target isolated country and using a line burning method to strip country out and achieve the outcomes required to eradicate rubber vine and promote healthy return in the vegetation. Job well done Rangers! See more

09.01.2022 Mabuntha The Morning Glory Clouds or Mabuntha in Gangalidda language is the rare meteorological phenomenon that rolls across the Gulf and can be observed above the skies in Burketown in September and October. The Gangalidda People believe the morning glory was created by Walalu, the Rainbow Serpent, and is of great cultural significance. It is told that the clouds rolls over and picks up the spirits of those passed before us and sets them free. Photo Credit: Murrandoo Yanner (Jnr)

05.01.2022 STORM BURNING - The Normanton Rangers carried out storm burning on Delta Downs Station at Lotus and Leichhardt Wetlands to thin out vegetation stands and to red...uce fuel load. Burning is also used as an effective control method of Rubber Vine, a Weed of National Significance (WoNS). Storm burning derives its name from burns being applied when country has received its first storms of the season. The Queensland Rural Fire Service also conducted Fire Fighter Minimum skills training to both the rangers and station staff. Rangers also carried out storm burning at Wernadinga Station to help manage Rubber Vine infestations through the use of a fire gel torch suspended underneath a helicopter. Rangers in Normanton utilise storm burning to prevent vegetation groups from thickening and to maintain a balanced community of different aged vegetation, which will maximise results for traditional country. A moderate intensity fire, when there is good soil moisture, will provide the best initial results. Job well done Rangers!

05.01.2022 Weed Management Report Gunnamulla 2020 During August the Gangalidda and Garawa Rangers undertook weed spraying at Gunnamulla beach, targeting Calotrope and Ru...bber Vine. During the first two days, the rangers worked along the beach front as well as the top of the sand ridge directly behind the beach, spraying a total of 4,566 Calotrope plants. This work aimed to improve nesting habitat for Flatback Turtles, in preparation for the turtle nesting season which begins in August/September. After completing weed work on Gunnamulla Beach, the Rangers targeted Rubber Vine in a number of isolated locations, which provided an opportunity to locally eradicate these isolated Rubber Vine infestations whilst the plant numbers were still relatively low. A total of 1,659 Rubber Vine as well as 381 Calotrope were sprayed. After 3 long days of work the Rangers sprayed a total of 6,606 plants which has made a massive contribution to the conservation of their country. See more

03.01.2022 The Normanton Rangers are delighted to announce the official designation of the Wernadinga Flyway Site to the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP)..., an international partnership aimed at protecting migratory waterbirds and their habitat, spanning from the Arctic to the southern reaches of Australia and New Zealand. The Wernadinga Flyway Site is located on the traditional country of the Kukatj People. Acting CLCAC Normanton Ranger Coordinator and Kukatj man, Hayden Tyrrell, said the designation is an important step towards protecting shorebird species and their habitat. We’ve lost so many animals in the past 250 years, and we’re still losing them today. We want to protect these species for the future and the next generation, before another piece of our culture disappears. We’re helping these shorebirds in their fight to survive another thousand, two thousand years, and into the future, and as time passes, we’ll know we’ve done the right thing by mother nature. The Rangers began migratory shorebird surveys on this section of coast in 2017 andunder the leadership of former Normanton Ranger Coordinator Phillip George and support from leading ornithologist Roger Jaenschcoordinated the nomination with the Gkuthaarn & Kukatj Peoples and leaseholder AJM Pastoral. The site received endorsements from local, state, and federal government before proceeding to the International Secretariat. This will be the third site nominated by CLCAC in the Gulf and the eighth site in Queensland. The EAAFP’s announcement can be found here: https://www.eaaflyway.net/south-east-gulf-of-carpentaria-a/ Another great achievement to celebrate, well done Rangers!

02.01.2022 It’s #ScienceWeek! We’ll be sharing a few videos about our research in the Gulf of Carpentaria this week. Did you know Gulf of Carpentaria coasts are critically... important habitat for migratory shorebirds? These birds fly to Australia from as far away as Alaska every year, and rely on the worms, crabs, clams and other food of the Gulf mudflats and sandflats to fatten up for their journey. This collaboration between Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation and Griffith University is showing just how important the Gulf is for these long-distance fliers.
