13.01.2022 Last Friday, our principal solicitor Ann-Margaret Walsh with representatives from other community legal centres around Australia spoke on the ABC Radio morning ...show to discuss how unpaid fines continue to affect people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness during the coronavirus crisis. This was a topic raised in our April 2020 newsletter, which discussed how the Fines Enforcement Registry will continue to issue warrants of commitment for unpaid fines during the time of COVID-19, but will use their discretion to not enforce fines on a case-by-case basis. 05.01.2022 Finally, new legislation providing common sense alternatives to prison for people who cannot pay their fines has passed the WA Parliament. After months of consultation with MPs across the political parties, Community Legal WA celebrated with member organisations of Social Reinvestment WA and supporting MPs who secured this Bill's passage. With the increase of JobSeeker and other income support payments during COVID-19, people have been lifted through the immediate crisis, but as we now confront what will be a long-term economic downturn, we cannot turn our back on those who are at risk of being left behind.
