24.01.2022 Thousands of miners, ex-employees and dependents of deceased will finally receive compensation for suffering through tuberculosis or silicosis because of working underground in South African gold mines. Six mining companies will pay out a combined R5bn ($400Million) in claims. Silicosis is caused by inhaling silica dust. The dust particles cannot be seen by the human eye, and if inhaled, can cause scarring in the lungs. Today mining companies are required to provide efficient ventilation, furnish dust plans to authorities and ensure employees wear personal protective equipment, including masks. CleanSpace EX is recommended for the mining industry. CleanSpace EX is intrinsically Safe certified for use in potentially explosive environments. 22.01.2022 What every Anaesthetist should know about N95 masks article from @abcnews "I thought, 'Oh my God, I've actually exposed myself unwittingly,'" said an anonymous senior anaesthetists in an Australian hospital. ... For the last five months, the senior anaesthetists, who asked to remain anonymous, has carried out the intubation procedure on dozens of patients suspected of being infected with COVID-19. As the process can cause tiny particles from the patient's throat to spray into the air, she has been wearing an N95 face mask, which she believed would stop her from breathing in coronavirus. Last week, she had a test to see if the mask was a proper fit, she discovered it had not been protecting her after all. 20.01.2022 SAFEWORK Australia issues a reminder of the dangers of Silicosis. When products or materials containing crystalline silica are cut, sanded or drilled, a very fine dust is created. This dust is harmful when inhaled and can lead to silicosis. Silicosis can be fatal within five to 10 years sometimes for people as young as 20.... Safework Australia recommends facilities use ventilation, use dust capture, cut with water, wear an AS/NZS 1716:2012 Respiratory protective device (Australian Standard), and use a vacuum. CleanSpace respirators meet AS/NZS 1716:2012 standards (Australia) are NIOSH approved (North America) and CE approved (Europe). 15.01.2022 Many blow-on/spray-on insulating applications contain chemicals or materials which can cause irritation or sensitization to those working in the industry. Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) is one of several material used to insulate new construction and when retrofitting older buildings. SPF contains Isocyanates, which have been reported to be the leading attributable chemical cause of work-related asthma (WRA) (NIOSH, 2004). Therefore, employers need to ensure that SPF applicati...on is carried out in a safe manner to protect workers. According to OSHA (USA) a respirator with full face mask should be provided and worn during application and clean-up to avoid skin contact. It is recommended that employers provide a supplied-air respirator for both safety and comfort of the worker since heat stress can become an issue. 13.01.2022 Dangerous silica dust can be formed on site from concrete cutting, grinding or polishing and using power tools on stone and manufactured benchtops. Breathing the silica dust can result in irreversible, untreatable diseases, including silicosis and lung cancer. SafeWork Australia offers 5 steps to minimize the risk: 1. Substitution such as sourcing composite stone benchtops with a lower percentage of silica... 2. Isolation of the hazard using principles of safe work design to designate areas for tasks that generate dust and appropriate worker positioning during these tasks, using enclosures and automation to conduct dust generating tasks 3. Engineering controls that minimise the risk of exposure to generated dust, for example, local exhaust ventilation, water suppression (wet cutting) or using tools with dust collection attachments 4. Should a risk still remain; administrative controls, including good housekeeping policies, shift rotations and modifying cutting sequences 5. Should a risk still remain; personal protective equipment including appropriate respiratory equipment (generally a minimum of a P2 efficiency half face respirator) and work clothing that does not collect dust. 11.01.2022 "Only by coming together will the world be able to face down the COVID-19 pandemic and its shattering consequences ... But we are still far away from having a coordinated, articulated global response that meets the unprecedented magnitude of what we are facing. The pandemic has reminded us, in the starkest way possible, of the price we pay for weaknesses in health systems, social protections and public services. Ending the pandemic everywhere is both a moral imperative and a... matter of enlightened self-interest. At this unusual moment, we cannot resort to the usual tools. 05.01.2022 My maintenance and operating teams complained that the (previous) battery packs made driving forklifts difficult and head tops limited their head movement which is important when running equipment checks outlined Matthew Topp, QNI Manager - Final Nickel. The powered nature of the CleanSpace ensured the high level of protection Queensland Nickel management were after and delivered fresh air to the wearer thus reducing risks of heat stress and respirator fatigue. The staff ...reported good battery life, comfort and easy transition from their traditional mask to the CleanSpace. The built-in battery and compact neck mounted unit meant it was easy to carry around and clip on before entering controlled areas. explained Matthew Topp. Importantly, Queensland Nickel has seen no drop off and consistent compliance with staff wearing CleanSpace. Matthew contributes this to the additional comfort of fresh air and on-demand air flow when staff have high exertion work or working in hot temperatures. Since issuing CleanSpace to its staff, other sites who experienced high dust loads and developed blocked half masks, have adopted CleanSpace. 01.01.2022 AUSTRALIA TIGHTENS SILICA EXPOSURE REGULATIONS BUT SOME SAY ITS NOT ENOUGH TO PROTECT STONEMASONS 1 Aug, 2019 - National authorities in Australia improved crystalline silica exposure levels from 0.1 milligrams of airborne particles per cubic meter to 0.05mg/m3. While this a vast improvement, many say it isnt stringent enough and that those levels are still dangerous. The Victorian authorities, with the backing of unions, lawyers and medical experts, want it moved to 0.02mg/...m3. The move illustrates the growing concern over crystalline silica exposure and silicosis. The CleanSpace Ultra Respirator (with half or full face mask) is best suited to stonemasons as it is water tolerant (for the wet-cutting areas). CleanSpace can offer advice and training on how to integrate CleanSpace respirators into work-place silica-reduction programs.
