25.01.2022 The beautiful Tallarook Forest that edges onto Clearview Retreat is under threat from logging by VicForests. We have joined with our neighbours to form Friends of Tallarook Forest, and are campaigning to protect the forest. Please follow the Save the Tallarook Forest facebook page, and sign our petition.

25.01.2022 The bounty of spring - asparagus and oranges picked today.

23.01.2022 SNOW AT CLEARVIEW It snowed for half an hour today! Snow is extraordinary here. We felt like innocent, luminous children marvelling at the spectacle. Ephemeral white frozen specs of nothingness floating in the wind on their journey downward and expiring on groundfall. A reminder that this moment, any moment, is precious, because it does not last. Magic still happens in Lockdown.

22.01.2022 After two days of lovely rain, the bees came out again in the sunlight, to forage amongst the flowers: oak, apple blossom and bottlebrush. Turn the sound up to hear their buzzing, and also the birds singing in the background.

21.01.2022 A few weeks ago we had the biggest crop of figs ever. Unfortunately we could not share them with anybody!

21.01.2022 Preparing for winter with lots of wood for being cosy inside. The majestic Golden Elms grow naturally at least 1.5 metres next to each other.

17.01.2022 We had a beautiful foggy morning on Friday. Mysterious and intimate, a good time to see the quiet majesty of the trees.

15.01.2022 The full moon over a cloud sea sky. A rare sight in the early evening a few days ago.

13.01.2022 Every now and then a stunning rainbow appears here. This one was contained in the curtain of rain from a sunshower. Bright white cloud, bright blue sky, bright green landscape, and an ultra bright rainbow.

12.01.2022 Every cloud sea is different. This one, from yesterday morning, is lower, and allows our nearest valley to still be seen below the drifting clouds (...have sound on to hear the bird song)

10.01.2022 Sunrise and the Dawn Chorus It is both calming and exhilarating to sit and watch the sunrise, and listen to the birds’ dawn chorus. The birds were particularly lively on this day, last Thursday. With the rhythms of daily human life disrupted so much by Covid-19, being witness to the daily arrival of the sun, and sharing that appreciation with the birds, helps to ground us in the deeper rhythms of the natural world. Make sure the sound is on when you play this video.

07.01.2022 Islands and promontories of yesterday's cloud sea.

07.01.2022 Wonderful to drone-dive into the tree canopy of our beautiful forest.

06.01.2022 Each stage of the life cycle of our blue gum trees (E. globulus bicostata) has its own beauty - flower buds, flowers, fruit (gum nuts), short blue-grey baby leaves and long green adult leaves. Always a pleasure to note the stages in the life of a tree.

06.01.2022 TWO-HOUR MINI-RETREATS, ONLINE with Clearview Retreat Our recent zoom mini-retreat with Anja Tanhane was a great success and we have now planned more of these mini-retreats.... 3-5 pm, Sat 12 Sept 2020 Yoga and Meditation - with Antonia Pont 3-5 pm, Sat 10 Oct 2020 Yoga and Meditation - with Claire Heywood 3-5 pm, Sat 14 Nov 2020 Yoga and Meditation - with Erika Newberry 3-5 pm, Sat 12 Dec 2020 Chi Kung and Meditation - with Anja Tanhane In these times of coronavirus, we yearn for more connection with others, and with nature. Meditation and a shared physical practice - even online - can help with our sense of connection. These practices can help us access the deeper spiritual connection that we all have with each other, with other living beings, and with our own souls. Each of the mini-retreats will include a guided nature meditation with Paul Macgregor. Participation is via registration with Clearview Retreat [by email: [email protected]], and instead of a fee we’d like to suggest a donation of between $20 - $50 from participants, for each mini-retreat. If you have lost your income, participation can be free. For more info: www.clearviewretreat.org.au/Weekend_Mountain_Yoga_Retreats.

05.01.2022 At Clearview Retreat, we look forward to resuming retreats, and having you join us here, when Covid-19 social restrictions allow. At that stage we will develop a new schedule for all the postponed retreats, and look forward to inviting you back to share the retreat experience with us. In the meantime, we will be posting photos and videos of the natural communities here at Clearview, to keep us all virtually connected. We’ve been seeing a lot of rainbows lately, which we take as a sign of hope. Put the sound on to hear the birds, and the wind in the leaves!

03.01.2022 A BIRD’S NEST THAT HANGS? Paul found this nest, beautifully crafted from bark strips, in our blossoming plum tree. It’s empty of birds and eggs and probably dates from last summer. What kind of bird builds a nest that hangs?

03.01.2022 We love the blue gums which live at Clearview Retreat and in the Tallarook Forest next door. They form such different shapes depending on their circumstances. Did they grow up with lots of room - and spread their branches? Did they grow up with siblings next door - so grow tall and straight, with top crowns? Each tree's form is beautiful, and full of character. Their skin is sometimes white, sometimes grey, sometimes yellow. A mix of smooth bark, and incredibly long peeling strips. They are the Southern Blue Gum, Eucalyptus globulus bicostata. Magnificent.

03.01.2022 Our group is conducting night spotlighting to research how many nocturnal animals and birds live in the Forest. We are finding a high level of many of these, but especially the vulnerable Greater Glider - it seems to have a thriving community. This is one of their sanctuaries, and needs to be protected.

02.01.2022 Stately and Elegant Trees Two eucalypts provide the cathedral architecture of the forest. Southern blue gums (Eucalyptus globulus) are the ones with mostly smoo...th trunks, often with long peeling strips of bark. Red stringybarks (Eucalyptus macrorhyncha) are the ones with closely packed fibrous bark, all the way to the top. Both these trees like growing on soil derived from granite, and the Tallarook plateau is mostly a granite mountain. All of the stately and elegant trees in these photos are under threat of logging. 01.01.2022 This joy is our little spring dam which is full and reflecting the sunny day. We have an overflowing tank and full dams for the first time in years. Ah, the reassurance of plenty of beautiful water.
