04.01.2022 Cleve Show will host a round of the Bendigo Bank EP Speed Shearing Competition on Saturday, October 5. It is the first year the competition has been held, with the winner of the final, which will be held at Cummins Show on Saturday, October 12 to take home $5000 plus be named on a perpetual shield. Competitions have already been held at Elliston, Wudinna and Kimba, with Yallunda Flat Show being the other venue. To be eligible to compete in the Bendigo Bank EP Speed Shearing C...ompetition final shearers will need to compete at four of the six town open speed shear competitions across the Eyre Peninsula and finish in the top 10 competitors by points. Shearers can gain points at each Bendigo Bank EP Speed Shearing Competition round, by finishing in the top five competitors. Ten points will be allocated for first, eight for second, six for third, four for fourth and two for fifth at each of the remaining shows Bendigo Bank EP Shearing Competition events. New Zealander Garth Michell is on top of the leaderboard with 20 points, a single point ahead of Dylan McGruddy, of Cummins, on 19. They are followed by Cameron Hicks, 13 points, Zack Wilson, Elliston, 12, Truman Hoffrichter 10, Craig Brands, Wudinna, 7, Scott Speed, Cummins, 7, and Bevan Pere, 5. Cleve Show shearing convenor Roger Lienert said the Bendigo Bank EP Speed Shearing Competition had resulted in some cross bred lambs being shorn in 29 and 30 seconds and shearers were urging each other on. However, sheep used varied at each competition so the times of the top five shearers at each event varied and shearers gained points regardless of how those times compared to other finals. The regular shearing section will have a refurbished shearing shed when they compete at this year’s Cleve AH & F Show. Prize money has been lifted substantially for this year’s show, with the winner of the open class to take home $600 double the prize money of 2018. There will also be intermediate and novice classes, with increased prize money also, to cater for shearers of different levels. Mr Lienert said novice classes were open the shearers who had not yet consistently shorn 100 sheep a day, with no age limit applying. Intermediate is someone that has never won an open shear more than twice, Mr Lienert said. Entry fee is $15 per entry, with payments to be made between 10am and noon on show day. Entry forms may be submitted to President, Cleve Show, PO Box 167, Cleve, SA, 5640 or email [email protected] Shearers and shed hands will also enjoy the facilities of the upgraded shearing shed and yards, which Roger said would result in cleaner sheep, thanks to the old mesh and bare floor in the catching pens being replaced with timber grating.
