22.01.2022 Chinese Cultural Performance On the 7th of September we welcomed three wonderful performers from QUT Confucius Institute who demonstrated the Chinese Xin Jiang Dance and Wing Chun Kungfu to our students studying Chinese in year 7, 8 and 9. Our students had a fun go at Xin Jiang Dance and discovered lots of differences when comparing it to western dance and this might provide some inspiration to their future art projects! Later on, Master Ken brought to us some classic Kungfu techniques and the students enjoyed immersing themselves into the world of finding inner strength!

19.01.2022 Konnichiwa Genki? This term, Year 8 and 10 Japanese students have been taking advantage of our sister school relationship with Kani Technical High School in Japan through regular weekly video calls. Both sides have been enjoying the experience and the awkwardness of overcoming language barriers in intercultural communication. Authentic opportunities like this really help students to develop their confidence in their speaking skills, one of the most difficult to embrace. With the amazing support of Japanese teacher, Mr Hanson and his terrific technical skill-set, we’re witnessing more successful and happy student video calls each week. Arigatou gozaimasu Sensei!

16.01.2022 Lady Elliot Reef Trip Last week, 31 year 10 12 marine science and biology students and 5 staff spent 5 days snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and exploring Lady Elliot Island. During this time we did a glass bottom boat tour, a guided snorkel and a number of other snorkels on the reefs surrounding the island. We also learnt a lot about the inhabitants and history of the island, including its formation and the human influences and changes over the past 170 years. ... The island is currently home to tens of thousands of migratory seabirds which visit from the northern hemisphere to breed as well as a large number of sea turtles, from 3 different species. The turtles are visiting to lay their eggs and we were lucky enough to get to see some of them digging their nests on our night walks. Under the water we also saw a range of turtles, fish, sharks, rays, corals, anemones and clams and were lucky enough to see a manta ray during the glass bottom boat tour. We also participated in a citizen science project taking photos of the reef to be uploaded for a reef census. It was a great trip and we highly recommend it to future students.
16.01.2022 Konnichiwa Genki? Video conferencing continues between our Year 8 and 10 Japanese students and our Japanese friends from Kani Technical High School and the technical side of things has become smoother each time. Students have thoroughly enjoyed the experience: ... It was uplifting and motivating. We saw students in Japan without leaving Australia! William Suters, Year 8 student Friday was a really fun day because we got to talk in real time to Japanese students. We talked about quite a few things, such as sport, food and anime. The people we talked to were super friendly and nice to talk to and we were always laughing. The language barrier wasn't much of a problem due to both sides being able to understand the answers quite well as well as gestures being a universal language. Overall, it was a really awesome experience and I wish we could do it again! Ashlyn Niotakis, Year 8 student Authentic opportunities like this really help students to engage with their language learning and, students who struggle with their confidence in their speaking skills, tend to shine in this social context. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate their inter-cultural skills and truly gain a global perspective through speaking another language.

14.01.2022 Sayounara! Last week we said goodbye to international students Takato Nakahara and Riko Kondo. For Takato’s last Japanese lesson, a 4-way Zoom Session was organised including our Year 10 Japanese class, other participants of Takato’s exchange program, students from Takato’s High School in Kyoto, and primary school students who regularly interact with Takato’s High School. They were keen to introduce themselves to our students and taught our students about Kyoto. There were a...pproximately 50 students participating in this zoom session which went very smoothly, a testament to Japan’s fibre optic network. Takato’s reflection of his time spent with our Japanese class included the following: It was very interesting to know how students learn Japanese. By learning Japanese from a different perspective, I could know more about Japanese and also English. Also, I made friends by teaching Japanese. Japanese class was one of my favourite class and Mr Hanson was also my favourite teacher. Takato Nakahara We wish Takato and Riko all the very best and a safe return home!

From education and discussion in Access lesson, class activities such as the celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music to creating animated version of acknowledgement of country. Our students listened to and were mentored by guest speakers and engaged in a range of activities a...nd workshops every day of the week. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students embraced their culture and shared their stories with pride. 10.01.2022 Professional Development Support by CIQ for our Confucius Classroom Teachers On Friday, 20 November, Ms Ivy Tang, Chinese Teacher was invited by the Confucius Institute QUT (CIQ) to attend a cultural workshop at Maryvale State Primary School near Warwick. This was one of the few visits that CIQ has made to this school this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Ms Tang together with the CIQ team, Antoine Barnaart, Director, Dr Phillip Sun, Visiting Chinese Deputy Director, Ms Li...sha Song, Business & Education Officer and volunteers they delivered a 1-day Chinese program to the 16 students ranging from 5 to 12 years old. The students usually learn their Chinese via Distance Education and Ms Tang was most impressed by the students’ level of Chinese and interest in the culture. This was a most memorable and influential teaching experience for Ms Tang as it was quite different to the teaching environment here at Cleveland High, however, Ms Tang endeavoured to introduce different aspects of learning that might help young children in remote areas like Maryvale discover more of themselves and their subcultures through learning a second language.

07.01.2022 Remembrance Day 2020 On the 11th of November, myself and the 2021 Senior and Junior Leadership team had the honour of representing Cleveland District State High School at our local Remembrance Day service at the Cleveland cenotaph. The service served as our first formal event as new school leaders and provided us an opportunity to witness the close relationship our school has within our local community. Our relations within the community, particularly with our local RSL has e...nabled our students to understand the importance of Remembrance Day, beginning with our Honour the Fallen project and culminating with our Remembrance Day commemorations. It was amazing to see how despite external circumstances this year, we were still able to come together and remember those who made personal sacrifices for the freedom of our country and way of life. The ability of the service to bring together people from all generations and life experiences made me rethink what Remembrance Day is truly about; coming together as a community and keeping the spirit of those who have served alive. It is important that us as students and young people do not forget the importance of this day and take our way of life for granted. I want to personally thank the local Redlands RSL for their continued work within our community, particularly Deputy President Corporal Ian Grey, Redlands RSL League Secretary Michael McDonnell Gunner as well as Ex Commando Sargent John Butler and Afghanistan Veteran Corporal Adrian Aiple, all of which we had the pleasure in meeting. Lest We Forget. Alex 2021 School Captain
07.01.2022 Final Performances for 2020 Term 4 featured some lovely performances from our Junior Creative Arts students and because other classes acted as audience members, the classes performed for each other, which was an awesome experience for all involved! https://youtu.be/4IJ4jeJe7y4
07.01.2022 Entrepreneurship Program - Nextgen Day 3 of the Challenge. Among other submissions today students had to create a slogan and the main marketing material. The team came up with a great name and an amazing slogan in 30 minutes - the magic of working under pressure! The photo shows the creative brainstorming process that started with the initial name Good2talk and ended up with the much catchier Havachat. The second pic is the actual flyer.... Another highlight today was meeting with the school Guidance Officer - Mr Damien Hepburn, who provided a lot of really good advice. In fact, after the meeting the idea morphed into a much stronger proposal. Instead of a mental health/psychological service, Havachat is now thought of as a service that seeks to draw students closer to the services that can be offered by the school but that are generally not approached spontaneously. As the slogan goes Having’ it hard?, Havachat! with fellow students: see that others are in the same situation, find what they have done and who they have talked to. You may too. This informal, student-centered approach is thought to be more appealing and less frightening than other counselling services around. As usual, go team1qld!
07.01.2022 Creative Arts Week 2020 Week 7 of Term 3 was the start of something special at CDSHS Arts Week! 02.01.2022 Annual French Dinner Thursday night, students had the opportunity to experience French cuisine at The French Table, Cleveland. Everyone enjoyed an entrée sampler of escargot, baguette, fromage frit and terrine; mains included a choice of boeuf bourguignon, crêpe à la reine or mushroom and truffle risotto and the dessert choice was either strawberry romanoff or chocolate moelleux. We were incredibly proud of our students as the restaurant wait staff complimented our students’... demonstration of maturity, kindness, respect and knowledge of French language and culture as exemplary. Students have worked on various units in which they studied French food and culture and, through this excursion, they thoroughly enjoyed putting their skills and appreciation of French culture into practice. Bon appétit !
