18.01.2022 Wet Weather Lawn Care - Flooding Most lawns can cope with a few days of flooding without causing too much damage. It is important to allow the flood water to drain away naturally and stay off the lawn as much as possible. Once the water has drained away, remove any debris, such as leaves and branches. There is a good chance that some soil and silt has been left behind after the flood. If this is only a thin layer, (up to 20mm), you can spread this evenly over the lawn with a... rake as a top dressing. If it is thicker, remove the excess carefully with a shovel before spreading. The stress of flooding may lead to certain weeds, pests and diseases so keep an eye out for anything and deal with it straight away. Top dressing is needed to correct a problem, if your lawn has uneven levels, to modify your soil conditions or to encourage new growth following a disease in your lawn etc or if you are wanting to increase surface level drainage and in doing this promotes new leaf growth. It is best to top dress when the lawn is growing vigorously enough to quickly push through the sand layer, (November to February). Fertilise the lawn two weeks prior to top dressing.... Mow the lawn, water well after you have top dressed and spread the top dressing (washed river sand), evenly and level out by raking or using a screed. 02.01.2022 SPECIALISED SHADE TOLERANT TURF. The styles of Australian households are changing. Homes are being built bigger and lot sizes are becoming smaller. To ensure these new blocks can still maintain enough sunlight for the family cricket pitch, Tinamba Turf have specialised in shade tolerant varieties and hold three of the most shade tolerant turf varieties in South East Queensland. The most important factor when selecting your new lawn is the amount of direct sunlight your lawn ...area receives daily. By making sure your selected lawn receives the right amount of sunlight means you have made sure your investment thrives. The hours of direct sunlight means the hours that the sun is hitting the area, not through trees or objects. These hours are calculated from 8am to 4pm each day (hours outside of these arent typically counted). *Is your lawn area sunny, shady, dappled light all day or full afternoon sun with morning shade? *Is the lawn area shaded by neighbouring trees, buildings or fences? More than 6 hours of direct sunlight per day will allow you to select from all turf varieties, however, if the area receives less, you will need a hardy variety to be able to thrive on very little sunlight. If this is the case, an excellent turf choice would be Shade Tuff (Zoysia Matrella), a very fine leaf turf, extremely soft, with a dense dark green colour, tolerates high traffic and extreme temperatures. Shade Tuff has a high shade tolerance requiring only 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day and is the highest winter performer with outstanding colour year-round. Another great choice would be Sweet Smother requiring only 1 to 2 hours of direct sunlight daily, soft in texture with a broad leaf and currently the most shade tolerant variety on the market. If you dont receive any full sun but have a well-drained area, Sweet Smother will grow in dappled sunlight as well.
