22.01.2022 Congratulations to Yiling Liu! She has just submitted her PhD thesis, titled Predictability of temperature and precipitation on interannual to decadal time scales in perfect-model experiments.
21.01.2022 Professor Pitman said it was no longer possible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, but it may be possible to contain it to two degrees, the absolute upper limit permitted under the Paris climate agreement.
20.01.2022 The Bureau has confirmed that a La Niña has formed in the tropical Pacific, with climate models suggesting it's likely to remain until at least the end of 2020.... La Niña typically brings: A wetter-than-average spring and summer to northern and eastern Australia; Cooler-than-average days and warmer-than-average nights; Increased tropical cyclone numbers; An earlier start to the monsoon and wet season; Average fire risk; and Less intense but more prolonged heatwaves across southern Australia. But every La Niña event is different. Once La Niña develops it usually finishes the following autumn, but some events have lasted 2 or 3 years. Rainfall can also vary considerably. During the last big event of 2010-2012 rainfall was above average across most of Australia (we saw Category 5 tropical cyclone Yasi devastate far north Queensland communities during this period), whereas rainfall during the La Niña event of 2008-2009 was much more patchy. 19.01.2022 As a La Niña event intensifies in the Pacific, bringing increased rain to parts of Australia and a powerful hurricane season to the Tropical Atlantic, a new book reveals the dynamics and impacts of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the irregular cycle that switches the Pacific Ocean between these cool La Niña and warm El Niño events.
19.01.2022 As 76 scientists on an all-women leadership trip to Antarctica discover, gender inequality in STEM is just the tip of the iceberg.
14.01.2022 The researchers, including Agus Santoso from the UNSW and Michael McPhaden from the US NOAA, derived their findings by applying the so-called butterfly effect on computer models to see how tiny changes in initial conditions affect eventual El Nino activity.
14.01.2022 Check out the shiny new website for the Journal of Southern Hemisphere Earth Systems Science! Publication of JSHESS is now being handled by CSIRO Publishing on... behalf of AMOS and the Bureau of Meteorology. Open access, no page charges... if you're studying the atmosphere, oceans or land surface (including the cryosphere) in the Southern Hemisphere, JSHESS is a great place to publish!
13.01.2022 Ozone hole update: what do scientists mean when they say it's the 'deepest' it has been in years?

05.01.2022 "Researchers from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes based at the UNSW said the findings emerged from the first comprehensive assessment of heatwaves down to regional levels."
03.01.2022 Expressions of interest are now open for presentation sessions, workshops, panel sessions and other activities at #AMOS2021 (Melbourne, 8-12 Feb).
