24.01.2022 Exactly one year ago today, Sydney had among the highest levels of air pollution in the world worse than Delhi and Beijing. By the end of the ‘Black Summer’ about half of the Australian population had been exposed to hazardous levels of smoke pollution for weeks. One year on, we know the smoke from the Black Summer bushfires was responsible for more than 400 deaths, more than 4,000 hospitalisations, and nearly $2 billion in health care costs. And we still don’t know the full extent of the health impacts. Climate change is harming Australians now, and to protect our health, we need to rapidly decarbonise, and shift to renewables, for a cleaner, safer and healthier future.

22.01.2022 The Victorian state government has pledged $543 million to establish six new renewable energy zones across regional Victoria, to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and towards zero-emissions electricity. This is yet another example of the states powering ahead with clean energy policies, leaving the Federal Government behind.

21.01.2022 Summer is finally upon us, and what used to be a season full of festivities, beach days, and relaxation, is now turning it into a season of anxiety due to climate change. Last summer we experienced this all too well. Climate change is driving longer, hotter and more frequent heatwaves, and supercharging our bushfires. But there’s still time to save our summer. Let’s band together and call on our government to do more to tackle climate change. Click here to join the Climate Council: https://climc.nl/2tpDoRR

19.01.2022 Meet Newcastle, the world’s busiest coal port that’s reinventing itself as a renewable energy powerhouse! Just last week, Newcastle Council has committed to a new Climate Action Plan, which includes transitioning council vehicles to electric vehicles, building more renewables and battery storage capacity, and switching all city lights to LEDs. The Newcastle community and local council are proving that there is life beyond fossil fuels for Australia's regional towns. Go Newy!

18.01.2022 The 3 biggest buyers of Australian coal and gas have all now signalled their intention to get out of fossil fuels, casting a cloud over three-quarters of Australia’s fossil fuel exports, worth a whopping $76b. Australia has everything it needs to flourish in a post-carbon world and it is not too late to pivot. - Professor Tim Flannery, Climate Councillor

17.01.2022 As climate change escalates and temperatures continue to rise, Sydney’s outer suburbs are becoming dangerously hot. Australia is ahead of the curve when it comes to warming. We need to be really serious about not having houses where people sit and cook. - Liz Hannah, expert in heat and health at Australian National University.

16.01.2022 We’re live now with Climate Council Book Club 7, with Chief Councillor Professor Tim Flannery and Climate Council CEO. In his new book, The Climate Cure: Solving the Climate Emergency in the Era of Covid-19, Professor Tim Flannery explores how 2020 has flipped the climate debate on its head, and exposes who is left standing in the way of action. 15.01.2022 We'd like to take a moment to thank Greg Mullins. Greg, a Climate Councillor and former Commissioner of Fire & Rescue NSW, worked tirelessly for almost 40 years protecting Australians on the fire front and continues to fight to prepare Australia for the effects of climate change. Last year, Greg spearheaded the formation of the Emergency Leaders for Climate Action, which has significantly influenced the national conversation around the escalating bushfire risk to Australian ...communities due to climate change. It is wonderful to see this important work recognised. Read the full article here: https://snip.ly/1ewl7o

13.01.2022 The Federal Government is no longer going to use dodgy accounting tricks to meet Australia's Paris targets, but as Climate Councillor Professor Lesley Hughes so eloquently explains: the Government shouldn't have tried it on in the first place.

12.01.2022 More than forty mayors and councillors across Australia have pledged to rebuild their economies post COVID19 with projects that facilitate jobs and tackle climate change. Local governments across Australia can lead communities through a zero-emissions recovery by prioritising local jobs, building sustainable infrastructure and investing in renewables Sydney's City of Ryde Mayor, Jerome Laxale. All 41 councils that signed on to the joint statement are members of the Citi...es Power Partnership, which is Australia’s largest network of cities and towns tackling climate change. 11.01.2022 "The fires should act as a big wake up call." A new ABC TV + iview doco looks at how Australian wildlife is recovering in the aftermath of last summer's catastrophic bushfires. Narrated by Hugo Weaving, the film provides an urgent message to safeguard our environment and act on climate change. Tune in next Tuesday night at 8.30pm.

06.01.2022 NEW POLL: Support for action on climate change is higher now than it was during the Black Summer fires, and over 80% of Australians want a net zero 2050 target. What is the Federal Government waiting for?!

06.01.2022 Congratulations NSW! The NSW Renewable Energy Plan has just passed in Parliament with multi-partisan support. It will create thousands of new jobs across regional NSW, turbo-charge the economy and give NSW residents access to some of the cheapest power in Australia. This is exactly the kind of investment needed to set NSW up for a strong economic future.

02.01.2022 Happy Friday! The states have been kicking goals this week, check out this good news and start your weekend off right.

01.01.2022 Brace yourselves - it's going to be a scorcher this weekend! A severe heatwave is set to swelter large parts of the country, with some places likely to reach almost 50 degrees in the coming days. Heatwaves are becoming hotter, lasting longer and occurring more often due to climate change.

01.01.2022 With the passing of the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Bill, NSW is on track to become a renewable energy superpower and create thousands of clean jobs in the process. Don't miss this special webinar that will delve into what else is in the NSW Renewable Energy Plan and what other plans the Government has to create thousands of good, clean jobs. 01.01.2022 Last week's heatwave reminded us early on in the season that the great Australian summer is morphing into a season of anxiety. Heatwaves are becoming hotter, lasting longer and occurring more often due to climate change. They cause more deaths than any other natural disaster in Australia. And it's not just summer - this spring was the hottest on record for Australia. ... We urgently need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate towards a renewable economy.

01.01.2022 A new report released today has ranked Australia’s climate policy second last out of all major emitters across the world. [EMOJI] The report by the GermanWatch Institute comes out annually and ranks the climate action of the world's largest emitters (and the EU) across emissions, renewable energy share, energy use and climate policy. Australia historically scores low or very low in every category. Last year, we came dead last on climate policy, with the USA a close second la...st. This year, Trump’s USA very narrowly stole last place as their environmental rollbacks finally managed to be worse than the Australian Federal Government’s inaction on climate change. Without any credible climate policy and no plan to strengthen our woeful emissions reductions targets, it’s no surprise we’re ranked at the back of the pack. Australia - we need to do much, MUCH better.

01.01.2022 The world is waiting for a "suicidal" Australia to reverse its stance on climate change, says one of the world's most senior diplomats. Christiana Figueres called Australia's position on climate change "unstable, volatile and unpredictable".
