25.01.2022 Threatened Species Day - 7th September 2020 Australia is home to more than 500,000 animal and plant species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Over the last 200 years, more than 100 animal and plant species have become extinct. Threatened Species Day is when we turn the spotlight on native plants, animals, and ecosystems that are under threat and reflect on how we can protect them into the future.... Some of Victoria's threatened species include: Fauna Baw Baw Frog, Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby, Eastern Barred Bandicoot, Greater Glider, Helmeted Honeyeater, Hooded Plover, Leadbeater's Possum, Macquarie Perch, Mountain Pygmy-possum, Orange-bellied Parrot, Plains-wanderer and Regent Honeyeater Flora Mountain Swainson-pea, Concave Pomaderris Phantom Wattle and Stony Bush-pea https://www.environment.vic.gov.au//victorias-framework-fo

22.01.2022 The kangaroo - to cull or not to cull. Some people feel that as a native animal they belong and shouldn’t be controlled while others consider them a pest through overabundance that must be culled. They are being squeezed out by development on the peri-urban fringe yet often thriving huge numbers in the agricultural landscapes with the provision of water sources. Kangaroo culling is such an emotive subject - this article highlights some of the research into the environmental impacts of over populations in particulars areas. https://www.theguardian.com//how-kangaroos-could-be-jeopar

22.01.2022 Most of our CLM students wouldn't use single use masks but this is a good point to remember if you do, or to remind someone you see who does. Snip the ear loops before you dispose, like hair ties - these elastic loops can be fatal for birds, platypus etc. #MelbPoly #SnipTheLoop #SnipRings #SnipRingsForWildlife

21.01.2022 Despite global lockdown in 2020 dramatically reducing our ecological footprint - this week humans had still used the planet's entire renewable ecological budget for this year. Read more about Overshoot Day and how the pandemic has only slowed the impact by 10% Should we be prioritising decarbonising the economy over economic recovery?... #MelbPoly #OvershootDay #DeCarboniseEconomy

21.01.2022 In March we took students to the Cape Otway to show them the impacts of an overpopulation of koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) - contrast that to their vulnerable status now in Qld, NSW and ACT and their continuing decline after this year’s devastating fires. Yesterday’s State Govt. announcement of an $18 million investment has come at a critical time for the species. #MelbPoly #ThreatenedSpecies #ProtectOurKoala #NoTreeNoMe #LibbysKoalaCrusade

17.01.2022 Happy National Wattle Day! We have much to learn from the first Australians who experimented with and used acacias growing around them. Read more in the attached link! 13.01.2022 A site visit to Yan Yean to do some rapid riparian assessments along Barber’s Creek yielded these beauties today - Tree Martins (Petrochelidon nigricans) flying in and out of tiny hollows in River Red Gums. A glossy petrol coloured crown and nape with rufous forehead and smokey lores and ear coverts. I’ll admit I always assumed they were Welcome Swallows flying around the creek but seeing them fly into these tiny hollows rather than the expected distinctive mud nest suggested something different - Michael Smith identified them for us. #MelbPoly #CLM_MelbPoly #RiparianHabitat

04.01.2022 Some really good news to see us into the weekend: A $23 million dollar 'Prom Sanctuary' investment, announced by state Environment Minister D’Ambrosio, is a historic improvement in the management of this iconic national park. This much-loved haven for wildlife is an absolutely stunning place to see our native plants and wildlife but invasive species, climate change and frequent fire has heavily impacted the health of the Prom. This plan for a Prom Sanctuary was developed b...y the scientific community and Parks Victoria's most experienced managers. This is not just about funding, but respecting and investing in knowledge. A predator-proof fence will be built right across the Yanakie isthmus and once invasive animals are removed some native animals now rare or missing there, including Ground Parrots, Quolls and New Holland Mice, can be safely reintroduced. There will also be a new wildlife research facility, visitor information centre and additional accommodation for park visitors on private land at the Prom's entrance.
