23.01.2022 Assembling the Pons Regulator part 2

19.01.2022 There are bargains out there, transporting with the right gear and vehicle gets it home.

18.01.2022 Yes the building of the Tower clock continues, detailed finishing of parts takes lots of time.

17.01.2022 For those with a technical leaning, as a few people know I have been working on a regulator by PIERRE-HONORÉ CESAR PONS from around 1800, the clock has been problematic to say the least. I have just spent the afternoon doing some tests on the pendulum to try to measure its Q factor. (I hadn't come across this term until recently when I was talking to one of our members Will Matthyson, Thanks Will) I have set up a fairly rudimentary test to get some numbers from this clock, th...e Q factor gives a number that uses the number of beats taken to reduce the pendulums swing to 36.8% of its arc.... I used the Microset Timer in count mode with the optical sensor offset so that when the pendulum got down to the required percentage it stopped counting. With the crutch attached and free swinging I got a number around 4,400, this took 11 minutes to get to the point were it no longer counted the beats. With the pendulum disconnected from the crutch the number was 19,600 this took 52 minutes. Both these readings were from an initial arc of 38 mm..... As an aside the clock has been running well for the last week after I did a slight mod to the crutch, I will post some pictures shortly

13.01.2022 All of my Family have served before the Mast in the merchant Navy. They sailed down to Africa, their watch times, and at the helm was timed by the bells. The Schatz Grand Mariner was such a clock still made today.

07.01.2022 We also built English Regulators, as a large group. Handmade lots of parts, We had cases built then French polished and glazed them. We fitted bearings, so they would run forever. We all put our own style to cases, silvered the dials. Mine has been running now for 7 years, never misses a beat, never needs a service. It was a project that gave me a great insight, that nothing is impossible, it took 3 years to complete.

07.01.2022 Working with the yellow metal to make our parts

07.01.2022 As daylight saving ends in the UK for 2020, the horological conservator at Windsor Castle will be busy changing more than 400 clocks from the Royal Collection Trust. For those of us with smartphones and smartwatches, the change to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) on Sunday 25 October will happen automatically whilst we sleep. But for the hundreds of clocks in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, each one will need to be changed by hand to ensure accurate timekeeping for visitors and residents. You can find the full story of Fjodor van den Broek's role as the current horological conservator of the 900-year-old royal castle at https://www.bbc.com/news/in-pictures-54387428.

02.01.2022 With the lockdown in place it's a bit hard for the Skeleton Clock Group to get together. Each of us is at very different points in our builds. Days & days of fret saw work and filing have been keeping us busy. Next time I'll be looking at CNC! Phew!
