25.01.2022 Nipple shields are a useful breastfeeding tool in many situations but it is crucial they are used correctly. Incorrect use can lead to reduced milk supply, poor milk transfer to baby, inadequate breast drainage leading to complications such as blocked ducts and mastitis. Here is a helpful video if a shield is needed...

21.01.2022 Some useful information here especially with Christmas coming up

20.01.2022 Had a great week this week with new Mums and parents-to-be. I was invited to talk to the Mums at the Mothers Group (Grow Medical, Sherwood) about the role of an IBCLC and how a Lactation Consultant can help parents. Together we explored Mums different journeys so far with feeding their babies. For some there had been challenges along the way and it was helpful to look at reasons for these difficulties and have a better understanding of them. For the parents-to-be, I ran the monthly "When baby Comes Home" antenatal class at Grow Medical, Highgate Hill. In this class we focus on the first three to four months with a new baby and what to expect with crying, feeding and sleeping. Always so rewarding to work with new and expecting parents who are super excited

18.01.2022 A huge thanks to all my wonderful clients from 2019. I have received such lovely photos and updates of many different journeys. Sometimes breastfeeding can be such a challenge and I am frequently blown away by the determination and dedication mums show. Not forgetting the Dads who have their own feelings of frustration and desperately want to help their partner and new baby but are unsure how. Don’t underestimate your value Dads. Just being there to support your partner through the initial adjustment period and cuddle your new baby as much as possible is a tremendous help. I am away from Jan 2nd until Jan 9th. Happy New Year ! I look forward to helping more new parents in 2020

18.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what is in mothers milk? We are still discovering new information about what is in human breast milk. .....

17.01.2022 In this weeks Highgate Hill Parents group, Grow Medical IBCLC Di Walsh will answer your questions and discuss what a Lactation Consultant can do for you. We hope to see many of you there on Thursday from 1:30pm to 3pm.

17.01.2022 It is so difficult at the moment for new mums needing breastfeeding support. Breastfeeding is protective to their little ones . The WHO advice is to exclusively breastfeed but that is not always possible . Please remember some breastmilk is so much better than none. I am currently still doing home visits if a family are happy for me to. Hospitals are continuing to do home visits to check on mum and baby and weigh baby. The alternative would be to take baby out to a GP clinic which would have far more risks.

17.01.2022 This is great to know! I had no idea it was possible to increase breast milk yield by this much by combining hand pumping with your electric pump.... well worth a share.

16.01.2022 Home Visits. Are you having some challenges with your newborn? A home visit can be very beneficial to new parents adjusting to feeding and caring for their new baby. I often find that when new parents take their baby home from hospital, they have been provided with a huge amount of advice about how to feed and care for their baby. Many feel a little confused and overwhelmed.... What does a home visit involve? During a home visit I will listen to your concerns and take a detailed history so I can form a good picture of what has been happening. If you are breastfeeding your baby, positioning of mum and baby is really important to help prevent sore and damaged nipples, to ensure your milk supply builds up and meets your baby’s appetite. It will also help to prevent complications such as mastitis. I bring with me various teaching aids including a doll and a knitted breast to demonstrate and help you to visualise what you are aiming to achieve. We can experiment with what works for you and your baby. Each mum and baby pair are unique. There are many anatomical variations. Women’s breasts can vary in size and shape. Nipples may be small and flat, or large and long. The shape of each mum’s arms and abdomens vary. Babies mouths can be small, palates high and bell-shaped or flat and broad. Most babies have receding chins, some more than others. Tongue shape and shape of the frenulum can vary greatly too. It is important to know that all these variations are normal and my aim is to empower you with strategies and encourage you to experiment with these to find what works for you. During a home visit we can find a chair/sofa that is the most comfortable for you and which cushions most supportive. I can demonstrate how to recognise when a baby is well attached to the breast and transferring milk well. With renewed confidence breastfeeding will become so much more rewarding. I am able to help you if you have chosen to bottle feed, mix feed or have to transition to bottle because breastfeeding hasn’t worked. You may need some guidance with feed quotas and bottle feeding technique. We can discuss ways to enjoy bottle feeding which will support bonding with your baby in the same way that you do when breastfeeding. Whether you are breast or bottle feeding your little one, I find that parents have many questions about caring for their baby including: Crying and fussing Not settling in their own cot Sleep issues Wind and hiccups Frequency and duration of feeds Feeding quotas Baby’s cues (communication) and how to respond to these A home visit is a great opportunity to address all your concerns. I allow an hour but you can request a longer visit if you need to.

15.01.2022 As new parents you are expected to read your new baby’s cues or communications. This can take time but you are with your baby round the clock so it won’t be long before patterns emerge and a two-way communication will grow. Just wanted to share this fun picture of baby cues.

14.01.2022 An interesting article which raises many good points. It is up to each individual family to figure out what works for them in regards to where their baby sleeps. It is helpful to have research supporting safe co-sleeping so parents don't have those guilty feelings if it is something that works for them.

13.01.2022 This is great and I sure reckon new parents can relate to it...

12.01.2022 A lovely positive article to kick off the new year. Just a little reminder of the value of our affection to our little ones. Sometimes our busy lives can lead us away from the important things. Happy New Year. I hope 2019 is full of wonderful experiences.

09.01.2022 If you are expecting or know someone expecting their first baby this class is wonderful. It is worthwhile going to even if you have attended the antenatal classes at the hospital. During this two hour class we explore your parenting values and help you to understand your baby's cues. Cued care is the key to two-way communication with your baby in the first six months of life. 08.01.2022 A wonderful group of expecting parents this morning at the antenatal class ‘Life With your Newborn’ at Grow Medical Highgate Hill. We covered what to expect with crying, feeds ,settling and sleep. It is so rewarding helping parents understand what life with a newborn might be like. Also equipping them with knowledge, confidence and strategies to care for and enjoy getting to know their new little ones.

05.01.2022 Some good advice here...

05.01.2022 There is often so much pressure to establish a routine with your new baby. There are many books that set out routines to try which sometimes work but also may not. Every baby is very different and they will communicate their needs to you if you watch their cues. This forms a very unique and close relationship with your baby

05.01.2022 I sometimes get the feeling when I suggest to families that it is not necessary to burp baby, they just don’t believe me. I guess it’s something we have always done and continue to be told to do. Here is some evidence to support that we really do not need to ...

02.01.2022 I think this link does such a good job of explaining why a baby can be unsettled and gassy or spit up and vomit frequently which so many babies do. I find myself talking to parents about this at every visit.

02.01.2022 Love Pinky McKay. She always has great advice

01.01.2022 Breastfeeding? This article is the first in a weekly series created by our early life team including GP Lactation Consultant Dr Sonja Morgan, Midwife Lactation ...Consultant Di Walsh, Australian Breastfeeding Association Nurse Kay Whitby and more. With so many South Brisbane families calling Grow Medical their General Practice, we see lots of pregnancies, newborns and breastfeeding mums. Establishing breastfeeding well is one of the best starts you can give your child in life, but it isn't always easy or straightforward! No one expects to ride a bike perfectly the first time, and breastfeeding is similar. Our number one tip is that it takes a little time for mother and baby to fit together and learn how to best work together for comfortable and efficient breastfeeding. We are here with you to ensure you and your baby stay well whilst getting it right in those early days, with drop-in baby clinics, free parents groups, GPs, breastfeeding support and sleep clinic. Make sure you like the Grow Medical Facebook Page to see more articles as they are published! >>> https://www.growmedical.com.au/blog/breastfeeding-tips See more
