22.01.2022 Devastated to hear our Dark Homo home @flamingosdancebarhobart is being forced to close by new landlords. We will never forget the wild nights we’d had there over the last three years of epic parties. Here are just a few lost photos from last year’s raucous Dark Homo captured by @duncographic ... Dark Homo will rise again (hopefully for next year’s winter solstice), and we hope Flams find a new home for Tassie’s queer community very soon. It is a timely reminder that our queer spaces are rare and can be easily lost. Even if we don’t love every gay bar or party, or agree with some of their outdated door policies (which excludes me personally), we recognise the importance of fighting to save all our queer friendly nightlife venues and spaces from being turned into another apartment block. 21.01.2022 This month, we should have been throwing our 11th birthday bash and our 7th Homo Halloween filling the Gaso with colourful queers of all persuasions. Hard to imagine this time last year, CLOSET was celebrating its 10th anniversary with a bunch of epic open air parties packed to the rafters. We came into 2020 with big dreams but of course fate had other plans. Instead, the Year of the Rat has been a year of hard knocks, solitude and reflection. ... To celebrate our 11th birthday, we are planning a free virtual party next Fri Oct 23, Victoria’s delayed Grand Final Eve Public Holiday. While we’re sad we won’t be dancing under the stars, we will bring you many of our finest resident DJs live streamed direct from self-isolation. We miss you all, and we’re thinking of those in our LGBTIQ community, and our friends in events, hospitality and arts who are doing it particularly tough under lockdown. If you can, please keep supporting your local restaurants, cafes, live music venues and clubs, queer-owned businesses and small businesses who are working so hard to stay afloat. 07.01.2022 Today would have been the incredible Freddie Mercury's 74th birthday. It's been nearly 30 years since Freddie died from an AIDS-related illness. In that time th...ere's been huge progress in the fight against HIV. So much so that we can now say that people living with HIV and on effective treatment cannot pass on the virus. In the year after Freddie's death, Queen re-released Bohemian Rhapsody which raised over 1 million to help us support people living with HIV. This amazing generosity from the band and their fans meant we could be there for more people affected by HIV during the time when effective treatment was still some way off. The loss of Freddie is a reminder of how many amazingly talented lives were ended far too soon during those dark days of the HIV epidemic. We’ll keep shouting loudly and proudly in memory of those, just like Freddie, who are sadly not here to see the huge progress made in HIV. Happy birthday Freddie.
