24.01.2022 This lovely red dress came from one of our clothes swaps. We all know that secondhand doesn't mean second best. What's interesting is that we see so many brand new 'secondhand' pieces like this in our swaps. We're producing about 150 billion new garments a year and 80% of them end up in landfill. Clothes swaps, thrift stores and hand-me-downs are slowing the overconsumption curve but we need to do a lot more to stop fashion from being one of the most polluting industries. It's #SecondhandSeptember Where @oxfamgb is encouraging the world to adopt a circular fashion economy! Secondhand fashion is fun and helps you create ypur own personal.style! Post your #SecondhandSeptember outfits and tag us!

24.01.2022 Here are 7 easy ways to help end fashion’s impact on modern slavery. But first, did you know that many of the world’s biggest retailers and fashion brands are complicit in modern slavery conditions being perpetrated on millions of people, particularly through sourcing cotton and yarn. 40% of all fashion industry textiles use cotton. G20 countries imported $US127.7 billion of fashion garments identified as at-risk products of modern slavery.

22.01.2022 Image repost from @im_not_a_snob. Clothes swaps are becoming quite popular and we couldn't be more thrilled to see this happening! When we started SWAPPING parties 5 years ago, it was less popular than it is now. Now that it's becoming the new normal, it feels like we're edging closer to a much bigger circular fashion economy! Yay!

21.01.2022 As significant as the COVID-19 crisis has been, climate change still represents the greatest threat to global health.

21.01.2022 Turn your old garments into new clothes! H&M has installed a recycling machine called "Looop" in Stockholm, Sweden. The shipping container-sized machine cleans ...the fabric, breaks it down into fibers and spins it into yarn again. The process takes about 5 hours and uses no water or chemicals. Is H&M actually cleaning up their act or is this just another way for the fast-fashion giant to distract us? @hm via IG

20.01.2022 "Microfibre emissions are growing 12.9 per cent a year, and current annual emissions to land, at 176,500 tonnes a year, exceed those to bodies of water, at 167,000 tons a year. Microfibres, defined as particles less than 5 millimetres in length, are generated in large quantities at every stage of a fibre’s life cycle, especially during washing, which mechanically fragments synthetic fabric. ...calculations showed that about 5.6 million tons of synthetic microfibres were relea...sed from apparel washing between 1950, the start of widespread use of synthetic fibres, and 2016, half of it in the last 10 years. Just under half of it ended up on land, with 1.9 million tonnes on the surface and 600,000 tonnes in landfills."

14.01.2022 Microfiber pollution often originates from synthetic textiles (nylon, acrylic, polyester), with low-quality synthetic products shedding the most.

14.01.2022 "For the next two years, the law (in France) will come into force, for example, prohibiting clothing manufacturers from destroying clothing that has not been sold for one reason or another. In 2019, the French horrified documentary giant from Amazon, who threw more than three million unsold or returned new products in the trash. Similar reports were also published for a few luxury brands that preferred to destroy new products when they were recycled, for example. According to... the Commission, new products worth EUR 630 million are destroyed each year in France. The new law prohibits destruction in all product groups that are not food products. A few months ago, we received an offer from a luxury brand that would have given us brand new shoes. The condition was that we dismantle them and recycle the material. We said no. Hopefully, the law will force companies to look at their production chain, stop the constant supply of new collections and overproduction in appalling conditions in Bangladesh, for example, Fayard says."

09.01.2022 "When clothing is repaired, repurposed or redesigned, not only does it help your wardrobe, but it also helps the environment. Textile waste is a significant part of municipal solid waste. An average consumer throws away 70 pounds of clothing per year. Globally we produce 13 million tons of textile waste each year, 95 percent of which could be reused or recycled. https://www.tahlequahdailypress.com//article_f494d8fd-e401

08.01.2022 When we donate our unwanted clothes, we tend to feel good about it. Were doing the right thing, surely? Diverting them from landfill. Giving someone else the chance to enjoy them. But how often do you think about the power dynamics behind all this? What if we moved from a position of charity to a position of justice & equality?? Here's our Insta LIVE with Clare Press' Wardrobe Crisis on this topic: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CE6OJuCFleb/ We'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic!

Still buying the vast majority of her outfits from charity shops, Ruth says it is infuriating to see secondhand shopping go in this dubious direction. "Any 90s and 00s labels get snapped up quickly and the quality overall has definitely been slipping while prices have been driven up, meaning people who shop there due to necessity, or for a more sustainable alternative to the high street, are priced out by savvy resellers. https://www.refinery29.com//depop-secondhand-gentrification
