25.01.2022 In City of Sydney we our community gardens! We’re holding public consultation on how to grow and shape our community gardens for the better in future. You can have your say here: https://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/community-gardens

25.01.2022 Voice. Treaty. Truth. Proud to join City of Sydney staff today for the official launch of our stretch Reconciliation Action Plan, establishing a strong approach to advance reconciliation, with longer-term strategies, and defined measurable targets and goals.

25.01.2022 Great piece by Jeff Sparrow in Guardian Australia today on why a few reclaimed golf courses won't stop the Arctic melting. SHARE your thoughts on what’s needed now to act on dangerous climate change. https://t.co/wIhXGxDsPb?amp=1

25.01.2022 Of all levels of government, councils have the strongest grassroots perspective on the job losses and economic damage. Great to talk to Channel 9 today about our work to support jobs and a locally led recovery for NSW.

24.01.2022 We local government! Thanks to Shadow Minister Jason Clare for meeting today to talk about the great work local governments are doing to lead Australia’s economic recovery. We’re creating jobs in every city and town, and supporting our communities to build back better.

23.01.2022 This week, we held our Local Government NSW annual Conference online, looking over the year that was with Mayors and Councillors across NSW - and setting a course for the future. This past year we won the largest quantum of funding ever for councils, especially to support efforts to tackle the impacts of dangerous climate change, drought and bushfire assistance. While affected councils battled the Black Summer fires, I’m so proud we joined with the City of Sydney ...and key State Government agencies to create the Local Government Bushfire Recovery Support Group, and facilitate a range of support and recovery services to councils caught up in the heart of the fires. We fought to secure an unprecedented amount of Federal and State funding support for NSW councils and their communities more than $5.3 billion in disaster recovery and resilience funding as well as COVID-19 economic stimulus funding. The smoke had barely cleared from the fires when we were hit with a once-in-a-century pandemic that sent our communities into lockdown, stalled our economy and threated to decimate the job market. We pulled together, and altogether, LGNSW advocacy helped secure a unique $395 million COVID-19 economic stimulus package. That’s on the back of the $170 million we helped deliver for local government amid sustained drought another, invidious crisis that seemed to disappear from the consciousness of many as the year went on. Again, LGNSW advocacy played a key role in securing funding for public spaces projects including local roads, footpaths, cycleways and other community infrastructure under the $250 million Public Spaces Legacy Program. We helped obtain $225 million in new and accelerated funding under the Fixing Local Roads program. LGNSW continued to press the battle for Emergency Services Levy support, with almost $14 million of councils’ 2019/20 contribution covered by the State Government, and more than $32 million for 2020/21. We successfully stopped the introduction of compulsory universal postal voting for local government elections, allowing democracy - and the all-important democracy sausage sizzle - to continue in 2021. We continued to see wins for NSW library funding, with this year’s $12.5 million component of the biggest funding increase for public libraries since World War Two. There’s so much more to do - including the fight for a seat on National Cabinet - but thanks to everyone who has supported our work this past year!

22.01.2022 The children of Erskineville are organised! I’ll be proudly presenting their petition to the next City of Sydney meeting to call for an upgrade of Maureen Oliver Reserve. Here’s hoping we can deliver a great new pocket park for these future leaders!

21.01.2022 We’re losing so many wonderful and iconic City of Sydney businesses during this pandemic. Today’s announcement that karaoke institution Ding Dong Dang Karaoke will close is devastating. Beloved by Surry Hills, residents and beyond, it’s a loss to our eclectic late night economy. I’m more focussed than ever on doing all we can to support our great local businesses survive. ... TAG a friend to remember all those great nights at this City institution. https://www.theaustralian.com.au//8fea030c58bde75b913ba328

21.01.2022 Thanks to City Gym Sydney for hosting today’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Sports Day! Great to see so many signs up to join Sydney Convicts Rugby Club and so many other strong community teams.

20.01.2022 Waterloo must remain a place for all people, not the privileged few. Thanks for Waterloo residents, Tanya Plibersek, Ron Hoenig MP, Penny Sharpe, Adam Searle, Ryan Park and John Graham for joining us tonight to envision what the future of Waterloo should hold together.

20.01.2022 By working together across all levels of government we can help drive a locally led recovery. As the NSW Government’s budget approaches, we’re urging the NSW government to expand on its spending program to help dig the economy out of a deep recession. We’re calling for:... $2 billion in building an extra 5000 social housing units $1 billion to a water security program $100 million to make outdoor dining widespread Reinvesting the NSW Waste Levy back into helping recycling grow in NSW and creating jobs Now more than ever we need to pull together to properly fund the local delivery of infrastructure and services, to protect and create jobs and keep money moving. https://www.smh.com.au//councils-urge-state-to-expand-on-s

20.01.2022 The theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week, Always Was, Always Will Be, recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for the Australian continent for more than 65,000 years. This year, I’m calling on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to have a greater voice in local government and stand for next year’s council elections across the State, and I hope Premier Berejiklian and the NSW Government will join us in this coordinated effort. Abo...riginal and Torres Strait Island people represent a vital voice in local communities, but they are under-represented in local government. Currently there are just 24 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander councillors across our State. Councils are the level of government most connected to their local communities and it’s critical that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are fairly represented. They bring invaluable insight on culture as well as issues facing their people. SHARE to show your support for our campaign to see more diverse faces in local government, and TAG a friend who may be interested! 19.01.2022 As we drive the City of Sydney’s recovery from COVID, it’s time for new leadership. I would bring progressive values to the role - but I’ve shown I’m able to work with other levels of government and all stakeholders to deliver outcomes for our communities. You can learn more about what I stand for below, and join us to shape Sydney’s future here: https://www.lindascott.org.au/volunteer... https://cityhubsydney.com.au//labors-linda-scott-enters-m/

19.01.2022 Community gardens are such an important part of City of Sydney - thanks to our Erskineville residents for showing me around theirs this evening!

19.01.2022 Let’s get the City of Sydney to reopen - outdoors! Councils across NSW understand that in order to see an economic recovery from COVID, the use of outdoor dining, green spaces, performance spaces and open spaces generally, will be critical. What’s your idea for a new outdoor performance since space? ... https://www.smh.com.au//streets-laneways-and-parking-spots

16.01.2022 The mean tweets of the anti-vaxxer movement! This is what happens when you’re a women in public life, standing up for science and evidence-based public health information in a global pandemic. Thanks to City of Sydney Councillors for their unanimous support of my motion to advocate for an urgent ban on a planned anti-vaccination misinformation bus tour from publicly-owned facilities or land in the City of Sydney, due this Wednesday.

16.01.2022 Thanks to Pyrmont residents for meeting John Graham, Adam Searleand I today to discuss the State Government’s new Pyrmont Place Strategy. We need a coherent vision for our City - not a plan for vested interests, made by decision makers behind closed doors. As one of the most densely populated parts of our City, we must ensure Pyrmont and Glebe remain wonderful places to live for people, with infrastructure to support growing populations.... As an Australian Labor councillor, I’m fighting to ensure there’s public benefit embedded in all that’s done on Glebe Island and for Pyrmont.

14.01.2022 Councils are driving local action on climate change in every corner of NSW. Thanks to Declan Clausen - Deputy Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Kyogle Council and NSW Department of Planning and Environment staff for joining Local Government NSW to share ideas about how councils can reach net zero emissions to ensure we create jobs, save public money and take action to prevent dangerous climate change.

14.01.2022 On the 11th of the 11th, we remember all the men and women who have fought and died for our country. They sacrificed everything for us. We will never forget them.

13.01.2022 We’re on the road to a locally led recovery, and it’s time to reopen our libraries and community centres. What’s your favourite City of Sydney library? https://www.smh.com.au//the-sydney-libraries-that-never-re

12.01.2022 Australian Labor is the only political party in Australia that supports the Uluru Statement in full. And this week, in NAIDOC Week, and at all times, we call on the Government to join us and commit to the three elements of voice, treaty and truth.

12.01.2022 Wonderful to welcome His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia to our City of Sydney Citizenship Ceremony today in Sydney Town Hall. It’s so good to be back, welcoming our new citizens!

12.01.2022 Vale Susan Ryan AO. When I first met Susan Ryan as a student serving on the UNSW University Council, she was still out to change the world. Her work as our first female cabinet Labor minister, successfully creating the Sex Discrimination Act and the Affirmative Action (Equal Opportunities in Employment) Act, was so inspiring. She was one of many people who encouraged me to find a path to change the world in Australian Labor, and I’ll never be able to thank her enough for that.... Her commitment to support women and create gender equity, to support elderly Australians, to build a stronger Australian Superannuation system and, most significantly for me, fighting for a better Australian education and higher education sector, was so powerful. With her wisdom, we successfully opposed full fees for Australian students at UNSW. I will never forget that day where we stood together and said no to a government who put money before merit in higher education. Her work created opportunities for all Australians, but especially for women. We stand on her shoulders and we will never forget her. My thoughts are with her beloved family, comrades and friends.

11.01.2022 Congratulations Joe Biden and Kamala Harris! 50 years ago this week Joe Biden won his first election for a seat on the New Castle County Council in the state of Delaware. He went on to be a senator, and now President. Biden’s progressive agenda, based on tackling dangerous climate change, promoting transparency and honest government, and creating economic opportunities for all, is leadership the world needs. ... It’s great to see so many local government leaders across the world showing the way!

11.01.2022 This week, I made the case on Sky News Australia that Annastacia Palaszczuk MP absolutely deserves to be re-elected on her record of success for Queensland, and a shout out to Jackie Trad who, despite being under attack from a Liberal-Green coalition, has delivered and deserves strong support to be re-elected too! The election will be close. Who do you think will win this weekend’s Queensland election? https://www.skynews.com.au/details/_6205237869001

11.01.2022 Happy City of Sydney Halloween

10.01.2022 Today, I’m so proud City of Sydney has unanimously resolved my motion to support the #RacismNotWelcome movement, committing to call out racism, ensure our City is a place where people feel they belong and are equal, and ensure our City is a place where decision making is shared. ... Local governments across Australia are joining this movement. On behalf of local governments, I condemn recent racist attacks on councillors in the strongest possible terms. Hate speech is a threat to Australia’s wonderful multicultural society and strong democratic institutions, and it must stop.

10.01.2022 Reducing toxic emissions to slow the impact of dangerous climate change is more important than ever before. Thanks to the City of Sydney for supporting my push tonight to transition our City’s fleet to clean, green carbon neutral vehicles. Greening the Fleet, here we come!

10.01.2022 Local governments are delivering a locally led recovery. Thanks to Mark Coulton MP and Catherine King MP for joining us today to meet with Mayors and Councillors across the nation, ensuring the Federal and local governments are working closely on this goal.

10.01.2022 Thanks for the honour of speaking with your wonderful Year 5 students today about leadership Darlington Public School!

09.01.2022 Tonight, our Chippendale communities have outlined a new vision for the future of their place. New ideas for Knox Street, for Chippendale and indeed across the whole City. A more sustainable approach. ... An approach that sees residents creating ideas for their own places. We need a more locally focussed approach to the sustainable future of City of Sydney, and I’m committed to delivering this.

08.01.2022 This morning in NSW, councils are focussed on a locally led economic and community recovery. On average, 10,000 Australians are losing their jobs each day. Every minute, 7 Australians will lose their job. We’ll work with whoever is Government in NSW, but we urgently need them follow local governments and actually show leadership.... https://www.abc.net.au//nsw-government-crisis-as-/12648966

08.01.2022 Live in City of Sydney? You deserve more clean, green, cool open space. Our residents absolutely deserve more quality open space, and as an Australian Labor councillor I’m committed to providing it but I strongly oppose taking contaminated land with costly liabilities off the hands of the NSW State Government.... WestConnex and the NSW Government are trying to hand over contaminated land encased in a dome of road flyer overs to our City of Sydney, peddling claims this toxic open space could somehow be used by our residents for recreation. SHARE to call on tne NSW Government to identify alternative green open space! https://www.smh.com.au//promised-westconnex-park-site-in-s

07.01.2022 I Waterloo! Today this strong, proud and united community joined Penny Sharpe MLC and I to share ideas about a better future for this place. Waterloo is a proud home to so many First Nations communities, who share their land with so many multicultural communities.... We can do better for these communities, and we will.

07.01.2022 Sydney needs more affordable and public housing, not less. Thanks to Melinda Pavey for meeting Nathan Moran, CEO of the Metropolitan Aboriginal Local Land Council, local leader Warren Roberts and I to discuss the movement to see more First Nations people provided affordable and social housing options in Redfern and Waterloo. We’ll keep working with everyone to deliver an outcome for these communities.

07.01.2022 In Rosebery, people value the protections their planning convenant provides for their beautiful Californian bungalows. The people of Rosebery know their suburb is unique, and it should be treated as such. For years, I’ve been fighting to stop the NSW State Government’s attempts to introduce Code development that overrides Council’s planning controls - but on 1 July, the State Government did just that. This new State Government Code risks overriding Rosebery’s covenants.... Thanks to Rosebery community for joining me today to stand against this Code, and to call on Rob Stokes to exempt Rosebery from the Code and return planning powers to City of Sydney in order to protect the special character of the area.

06.01.2022 Several years ago, I worked with the Waterloo community to help them secure City of Sydney support to expand their community garden. They grew food for their neighbours, and these life-affirming sunflowers. To the people of City Of Sydney, thanks for all you do to make this a better home for us all.

05.01.2022 My Dad loved sport. He loved going to see AFL games and cricket matches, and his joy was infectious. Sending love to all the great Dads, StepDads and those of you who play the role of great Dads today, and to all of you missing your great Dads too.... Happy Fathers Day!

05.01.2022 Now more than ever, we need to properly fund the local delivery of local parks, childcare services, and local pools and libraries to protect and create jobs and keep money flowing through local economies I’ve always strongly opposed the NSW Government’s decision to forcibly merge local governments. If this Government stands by their decision, the onus is on them to support forcibly merged councils through the full ten-year period their own modelling predicted it would take to... achieve any financial benefit A clear-eyed and transparent approach to the financial sustainability of local government has now become even more critical as the nation struggles to recover from the economic fallout of the COVID pandemic. 03.01.2022 Great to be at the NSW Government Sydney Summer Summit today, talking about how to get our State’s economy back on track. Local governments are doing the work to drive a locally led recovery. Councils invest significant time and resources in ensuring public spaces used by the public, inclu...ding restaurants and cafes for outdoor dining, beaches, parks and other outdoor places are clean, vibrant, well-maintained and effectively regulated to ensure safety. Local Government NSW is calling on NSW Government to provide $100m funding for councils and businesses in line with the Victorian model, which would permit more councils to support and grow local economies, and cultural and business precincts in a locally led and sustainable way. 02.01.2022 Our Redfern Fire and Rescue NSW Station has been keeping our communities safe for 120 years, proudly employing Indigenous firefighters who have close connections with Redfern.
