25.01.2022 Some Covid-19 laughs to brighten your day. Hope you enjoy
22.01.2022 This is a long post, but involves something you should know about. Please share so that others in Ryde know about it too. In September 2018, Council staff appr...oached me in regards to 68 Denistone Road, Denistone. Today I’m going to tell you a brief story of how between then and April 2020, I tried desperately to save this 100 year old home. 68 Denistone Road was no ordinary home. Constructed in 1920, it’s first owner was Mrs Christina Ann Jones. She was born in Ryde in 1853 and her son was enlisted in WW1 and returned in 1919. The home remained in the family for half a century before changing hands a few more times. Throughout its entire history it remained remarkably intact until its final owner took occupation in 2019 after paying an astonishing $3.601 million for her. Apart from its pristine condition at the time of sale, what made this home particularly unique was the block it was on. It was so large that it’s period gardens were able to surround the house and enable it to be viewed in the round. 8 months after its $3.6m purchase, a development application was lodged to demolish the home, subdivide its vast grounds a build 5 dwellings. For decades our community have have told Ryde Council to protect homes like this, so as your representative I acted on your wishes. At the Council meeting of September 2018, I moved to place an Interim Heritage Order (IHO) on 68 Denistone Road. It was carried by the Council with a healthy majority. This IHO, in theory, was meant to protect the home for 12 months while an official heritage listing was made. Days later, in spite of the IHO, neighbours reported hearing trades people undertaking works on the house. Photos were to reveal that elements of the house that were present when the house was advertised for sale, were removed. The expert heritage report concluded that the damage had not occurred naturally. In spite of this unnatural damage, the final heritage report concluded that any damage was repairable and that this 100 year old home had heritage significance for our City. Council agreed, and resolved in late 2019 that the home should officially be heritage listed. Then the State Government and the Land and Environment Court got involved delivering two hammer blows to 68 Denistone Road. The Court ruled in favour of the developer, and the State Government refused Council’s planning proposal to heritage list the item. This cleared the way for it’s demolition, and we lost this 100 year old home in April 2020. What frustrates me most about this entire saga is that the law that is meant to protect homes like this failed. It failed miserably. Here we had a 100 year old home that was sold in pristine condition, only to end up cannon fodder for bulldozers. Council followed the process to protect this significant home, yet at the end of the day, developers got their way. There’s a lot that needs to change with our planning system. Communities need to be at the heart of decisions surrounding heritage and re-development. However, what we see from this Government, is the exact opposite. Communities are sidelined and developers nearly always win. So as we carry on, I’ll need your help to change the rules. Please stay engaged, share this post, and together in-time maybe we can find that balance between a sensible approach to development, while protecting our history. I get that we need more homes, and understand how much of an issue housing affordability is, however in and amongst all that, 100 year old homes sold in pristine condition should not be able to be bulldozed. Surely it can’t be that hard to get that right. So my promise to you is that I won’t throw in the towel. As long as I’m on Council, I’ll keep on fighting for what you want; housing choice, sensible and sustainable development and protection of our heritage where it’s proven to exist.

In Ryde, we have had 487 small business grants approved t...otalling more than $4.8 million in support grants. Today I caught up with Steven Colquhoun, Manger of the Eastwood Club to hear about his experience in applying for the grant. The club shut down from March 23 and kick-started a 'Takeaway Friday' with a virtual happy to maintain social connections for community. Steven said, the grant helped keep the club afloat during the period of no income and helped pay for a deep clean ahead of the reopening. Businesses can apply for the $10,000 small business grant online, via this link: https://www.service.nsw.gov.au//apply-small-business-covid. The closing date for support grants is 30 June 2020. 01.01.2022 Our Wednesday night social trivia is becoming popular with members and visitors. Competition is getting keen with teams bring old school teachers and police off...icers out of retirement. Make sure you join in the fun on Wednesday evenings @ The Bizzo from 6.45pm. Come down and have a laugh and some fun. The other week we had a questions that had all stumped "What did Pandora's boyfriend find when he opened Pandora's box" Answer: phrase. If someone or something opens Pandora's box or opens a Pandora's box, they do something that causes a lot of problems to appear that did not exist or were not known about before. The term Pandora's box typically refers to something that is best left alone because it could cause problems if it is used, said, or done. The story of Pandora's box is a legend used by ancient Greeks to explain not only human weakness, but also how pain and suffering were first inflicted on the human race
