25.01.2022 Feedback and back again! We are BIG advocates for communicating expectations, but equally as important is circling back and providing feedback! The SBI model is nice simple one to use so that your feedback packs a punch and either reinforces good behaviour, or has a chance at changing not-so-good behaviour.... Some things to consider when giving feedback: Ask yourself why you’re sharing the feedback and what would be a successful outcome. Would face-to-face, phone call or email be most effective to deliver the feedback Prepare for how they might respond. Listen to what they have to say and provide a safe, supportive space Don’t delay! Real time feedback (given as close to when the situation occurred) has the biggest impact. This counts for positive and constructive feedback. Shoot us a message or book a free 15 minute chat if you need to up level your feedback game!

24.01.2022 Embrace the churn Were continuing our series on the employee on-boarding journey with the second phase - your selection process! Just like a customer journey there is fall out as we get closer to the end (or further down the funnel), however usually in a candidate journey the balance of power is in your favour (i.e., youre the one making the cuts) ... The application and interview process is often the first chance that candidates get to look behind the curtain (or the curated world you might show on social media) and get a real sense for your business Through this phase you can help candidates to self-select by being clear with expectations and cultural standards so they can assess whether these align with their own expectations and values It is also a great opportunity to make a lasting [positive] impression on every person who flows through your process. Make the not todays your biggest brand champions by giving them a great experience; taking the time to respond to their queries, follow up when you say you will and give them some constructive feedback! Stay tuned for what happens once youve bagged THE one (or check out all the info on the blog now on the link below) https://clubsandwichco.com/blog/employee-journey

23.01.2022 What. A. Year. While it wasn’t the year anyone wanted, and definitely not the year we thought it was going to be, it sure won’t be forgotten! Cheers to you, for making it this far through 2020! ... Cheers to our amazing clients, for continuing to grow, innovate, create and succeed in so many ways! Cheers to our team, for jumping on board this year and riding the roller coaster together! Cheers to our biz cheerleaders, for keeping us motivated, supported and inspired! And Cheers to 2020, for teaching us so much and getting us all soo excited for 2021! by The Latest for The Founders Team

23.01.2022 They say never mix business and family, but we did! Like so many other small businesses, our clients are often made up of family members; whether that be couples, siblings, parent/child or second cousins-twice-removed. These people are often who you trust most and might be the most flexible when it comes to salary negotiations! Club Sandwich, too, is a family business run by [self-proclaimed] power couple, Kateena (the HR nerd) and Aaron (the sandwich lover). ... So, in the spirit of Valentines Day last week, we wrapped up our top tips on how to navigate working with your significant other (because weve totally got it all figured out ). https://clubsandwichco.com//top-5-tips-for-running-a-busin

Of course, there is no-one-size-fits-all, but we've put together 3 key considerations to kick-start your thinking for your first strategy for the new decade (can you believe it?!): 1 Align your people strategy to your business goals... 2 Give the people what they want 3 Cover your butt Check out more info in the blog and if you want a buddy to work through your strategy with, or develop one for you, we know a few sandwich enthusiasts who would l.o.v.e to help https://clubsandwichco.com/blog/people-strategy-2020

19.01.2022 Can you spot the difference?! There isnt any! Just like there shouldnt be any difference in the features/priorities/values you spruik to your audience versus what you say (and even more importantly act on) to your team.... Like many other people weve been working our way through the @netflixanz catalogue and over the weekend watched the episode of Broken on Dangerous Dressers. A former exec of IKEA said the reason he left the business was the disconnect between what was portrayed to the customers and general public versus the reality seen by employees internally. Im sure many of us can relate to feeling uneasy when the image of a business and the internal realities dont match up. It makes you start to wonder what else might just be smoke and mirrors Its so important for team engagement to have a consistent message (and corresponding action) across all stakeholders: customers, suppliers and your employees. Have you experienced a disconnect between whats on the ad and whats in the box?! . . Feat. our office doggo, Murray

19.01.2022 Fair Work pulling out the funnies. Well played! Also great info for retail workers, weve definitely heard this one being used over the years!

19.01.2022 Give them a chance to say it behind your back Recent years have seen a surge in the popularity of 'real-time feedback' and 'pulse surveys', focusing on very regular (like weekly!) feedback opportunities. Now, don't get us wrong, we think regular opportunities for feedback are a great thing (so great!), and performance feedback should never be withheld until a formal performance review situation. BUT (there was always going to be a but) we do think we can get 'feedback fat...igue' when those weekly and fortnightly pulse surveys come around a little too often! We also think its super handy to give people a forum to provide anonymous and confidential feedback. Enter: an annual or biannual team feedback survey! We've shared the 5 steps of our team survey process and why it's one of our most cherished people tools over on the blog. Heres a sneak peek: 1 Design killer questions 2 Communicate, encourage buy-in & collect data 3 Analyse & present to decision makers 4 Present to the team & action plan 5 Make change! If youre still building out your team you can use a very similar process to survey and action plan improvements for your client experience too! https://clubsandwichco.com/blog/engagement-feedback-survey

18.01.2022 Over here at Club Sandwich we're pretty passionate about customer experience and its very close relative, employee experience. So, to help you along on this reflection we've put together our top tips for the 4 key stages of the employee on-boarding journey, from first impressions through to well after their first work anniversary! https://clubsandwichco.com/blog/employee-journey

17.01.2022 Were well and truly hitting the festive season Now is a the time to take a breath, reflect on the year so far and get set for 2020. The last few working weeks of the year are a great opportunity to spend some time with your team, reconnect with your company vision and purpose and set your big team goals for the year ahead.... If things are slower for you at the moment, use the time to get started on some of those projects youve been putting off. If this is your peak season make sure youre looking after yourself and your staff and getting everyone excited about the big goals youre kicking through the silly season! Gorgeous table setting by House of Harvey co. from their Christmas styling event last week; getting us all firmly in the spirit!!

17.01.2022 If youre a little confused about how to pay your team for the upcoming Australia Day public holiday, heres the scoop from Fair Work!

16.01.2022 In the wake of the most recent high-profile underpayment situation with Woolworths, it's once again highlighted how difficult Modern Awards are to interpret, and how easily misinterpretation can land a business in trouble! We put together three tips to implement today to give you a little peace of mind: 1. Confirm which Award (if any) each of the roles in your business are covered under;... 2. Sign up to Fair Work alerts for these Awards to get notified of any changes (and then read them!); and 3.Check your pay rates and annualised salary calculations and put a reminder in your calendar to do this every EOFY. More info in our latest blog up now. https://clubsandwichco.com/b/3-actions-for-award-compliance

15.01.2022 New Year, New Space! Our Club Sandwich home office had a bit of a facelift over the break! Its now a lovely little sanctuary between meetings and spending time at client sites (which we are pumped to be doing heaps more of in 2020!). As we get back in the swing of our day-to-day, our thoughts are with all of those effected by the horrific fires that continue to burn around our beautiful country.... We hope you are all safe and that the impacted communities and services find some reprieve very soon.

15.01.2022 Were excited to be chatting with our friends over at Women in Digital later this week about all things WFH rights and responsibilities! If you have any questions youd like us to cover comment below or send us a message. Register via Eventbrite for this free webinar event!

14.01.2022 We have information about employment conditions during natural disasters and emergencies, including what happens if a business has to close temporarily and information about taking sick and carers or community service leave. https://www.fairwork.gov.au//employment-conditions-during-

13.01.2022 Weve popped together a checklist for you to see whether your team members (new and existing) are actually employees or contractors. Check it out: https://clubsandwichco.com/employee-or-contractor

13.01.2022 Minimum wage and minimum Award wages are set to increase again (we were hoping employers might get a break this year!) and to make things a little more complicated the increases are being staggered across different months for different Awards. If youd like any help figuring out if your team will require an increase, and when this increase might come into play, get in touch!

13.01.2022 HR doesnt equal recruitment When we tell people we do HR, often the first thing that comes to mind is hiring staff or recruitment. While we dooo love to support our clients with recruitment (like our pals over at Collabosaurus !) we dont do recruitment in the way a recruiter would (if thats what youre after some of our faves are SF People Affix Group Pty Ltd & Digital Talent Co.).... We offer recruitment support, which might look like: reviewing your structure to figure out which role to hire for next developing a position description to figure out exactly what that role does and what success looks like writing up a job ad, posting and monitoring creating a criteria to assist with shortlisting developing interview questions sitting in on interviews or facilitating first stage interviews If you have a question or would like to find out more, shoot us a DM!

12.01.2022 It's that time of year again! You've seen all the memes about the diminishing number of Mondays until Christmas, which means it's time to communicate with your staff about the dates your business is closed over the festive season! Some Modern Awards require 4 weeks' notice, while others are up to 2 months, so take a peak and get those comms out! (And yes, there is only 8 more Mondays to go!)

12.01.2022 Thanks party people!! It's been a couple of weeks, and I think we've finally recovered, so it's time to say a huge thank you to everyone who made the Club Sandwich Consulting launch party a night to remember! We're so lucky to have you all as a part of the Club Sandwich family and without your support this venture would still be a little dream!...

12.01.2022 Are you growing your team in 2021?! 11.01.2022 The Story of Australia "This is the Story of Australia the story of an extraordinary nation. The Story begins 60,000 years ago. New chapters are written every day.... On Australia Day, we reflect on our history, its highs and its lows. We respect the stories of others. And we celebrate our nation, its achievements and most of all, its people. Were all part of the story." The 2020 campaign by The Australia Day Council is a touching reminder to respect and celebrate the people that make up our beautiful, flawed country. https://www.australiaday.org.au/

10.01.2022 Change is coming for salaried employees Back in March last year we first highlighted that the Fair Work Commission (FWC) has made a decision to make changes for employees who are paid using an annualised salary and covered by certain Modern Awards. Its taken a good few months but late last year the FWC announced the model clauses that would be added to these Awards and confirmed the requirements for employers who have team members covered by them.... These changes will come into effect from 1 March 2020, so its time to get your butt into gear if your team is affected! So, what are the changes? To ensure there is more transparency in the calculation of annual wages, and that reviews are occurring regularly, the changes require employers to: Share how they are calculating the annualised salary based on the Award and provide this info to the employee (probably in their contract) Keep records of the hours worked each day, including starting and finishing times, and unpaid breaks, and have the employee sign off on this record each pay period (this could be as simple as a spreadsheet, or utilise online timesheeting apps or tools) Use the records above to review each employees arrangement annually against the Award and sort out any underpayment Set an upper limit of ordinary hours and overtime hours to be worked, and where employees work in excess of these hours, pay them accordingly. Weve popped a blog together on next steps that also includes a list of all impacted Awards. https://clubsandwichco.com/b/annualised-salary-changes-2020

10.01.2022 Workplace Health and Safety isnt just for the construction site October is Safe Work Month here in Aus and a great opportunity to talk about safety in the workplace - many peoples favourite topic Im sure! It is the responsibility of business owners/CEOs/senior managers to ensure a safe workplace for all workers.... This sounds straightforward but often extends a little further than we think. Safe workplace includes: Physical environment including specific requirements for lighting and heating/cooling Home offices or alternate offices for remote workers or while travelling for work Psychological environment including providing a workplace free from bullying, harassment, discrimination and all associated nasty behaviour Client, customers or supplier workplaces your team work from Workers include: Your employees Contractors or consultants Volunteers The theme for this years Safe Work Month is Be a Safety Champion So why not whip out that cape and start a conversation in your workplace about safety. Talking about safety and encouraging your team to report any concerns or hazards is a great start to building a thriving safety culture where everyone is looking out for each other and the business. Do you have anything planned for Safe Work Month? Is it time to renew your fire warden training? Finally hang up a copy of your evacuation plan? Implement a bullying and harassment policy? Train your team on how to deal with inappropriate behaviour from customers? Check out www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au for a heap of handy resources!

10.01.2022 We kicked off our Friday having a chat with Women in Digital about employer and employee rights and responsibilities when working from home. We also shared some ideas on how to stay connected and productive during (what is now looking like) quite an extended period of time being remote from our teams! Check it out and get in touch if you have any questions!

08.01.2022 The Talent Sandwich Workshop Its been a week now since our first collab with the team from Talentrich and were already planning the next one! Our first workshop focused on How to Sustain Your Culture During Growth and we loved sharing our thoughts and experience in this area from both a people & culture and a talent acquisition perspective.... We gave a quick physics lesson to our lucky attendees on how a lever works (applying force to move a load). And also walked them through a [sexy] audit of the culture levers in their businesses (think purpose, vision and values) to ensure they are setting their team up for success through this next phase of growth! Talentrich shared their tips on advertising your culture, not just the role and the importance of interviewing for culture add, not just culture fit! If youd like to hear about our next workshop comment on this post or send us a DM and well pop you on the list to be the first to know!

08.01.2022 This is a common misconception and policy that some employers try to enforce. It’s great to encourage your team to utilise their leave balance to ensure they are rested and focused on their wellbeing. But if they have leave remaining it will continue to be available until it is used it all up!

07.01.2022 Shutting up shop for the festive break? If you haven’t already mulled it over, now is the time to lock in the dates your office/shop/factory is closed over the silly season! With many workplaces hitting pause from 21st Dec, we are just 8 weeks away!... Most Modern Awards and some employment contracts require at least 4 weeks (some 8, or even 12!) notice of a workplace closure, so hop to it! Your employees will need to know when the workplace is closed, but also what to do if they don’t have sufficient annual leave to cover the gap. Again you may need to be guided by what your Award says, otherwise have a think about what might be best for your employee engagement and also cash flow over this quiet period. If your workplace is staying open, make sure everyone has their leave requests in and your able to manage the workload across this period with the available staff. If you need to bring on extra team members for the season, make sure you’re well on you way to getting these people locked in and their availability confirmed! Is Christmas a busy or quiet time for your business? Will you be open or taking the opportunity to have some time out? Photo of a gorgeous Christmas table scape by the ever-talented House of Harvey co. Let them take care of the decor annnnnd cater your event with their scrummy treats!

07.01.2022 I agree with you, Lee, but its harder than it sounds! When youve worked hard to get your business to where it is, and youve likely worn all the hats along the way, its tricky to just step aside and let someone else take over. And maybe even a little naive or risky! To ensure someone excels in your team heres a few steps to work through (before you get out of their way):... 1 Get clear on what success looks like. This starts to form your KPIs, targets or goals for the role. 2 Decide if they have the skills, knowledge and experience to achieve this success, right away. They might need some additional training or to spend some time shadowing you before you jump aside! 3 Communicate your expectations, ideally in writing! This could be using a position description/role profile. People cant exceed our expectations if they dont know what those expectations are! 4 Keep your door open. You dont want to get in their way, but they should still feel supported and able to ask questions or bounce ideas!

06.01.2022 Tis the season! While you and your team are getting ready to wrap up for the year, take a few minutes to check in with them. Although it is tempting to make any unresolved angst or unaddressed requests next years problem, youll all likely feel better sorting it out before the break!... You might have already showered them with praise and gifts, but some heartfelt feedback and appreciation to cap off the year is a lovely way to float off into the two week blur of food, drink and not knowing what day it is! Most importantly, get yourself ready for a well-deserved break and encourage your team to completely switch off over the holidays, ready for a huge new decade in 2020! Club Sandwich HQ will be closed from today until 7th January and looking forward to connecting with you in the New Year!

05.01.2022 Is it back to Zoom for 2021? The short lockdown announced for Greater Brisbane today (from 6pm tonight, to 6pm Monday) is no doubt throwing a spanner in the works for many businesses who were heading back to the office on Monday (or had already headed back this week). Some important actions to take today if you manage a team:... Get in touch with your team to let them know what this lockdown means for their Monday. You might invite the team to take an extra annual leave day, or have them work from home where possible. Make a plan for taking home any equipment that might be needed if working from home Ask the team to reach out to clients and contacts whose service might be impacted and communicate your plan for continuity (or any disruption that can be expected) Give your team some time to adjust plans, get in touch with family or make arrangements as this impacts them outside of work too If working from home Monday, ensure each team member has 3-5 key activities to work on to give direction and a sense of achievement. Many people just getting in the swing after holidays will be a bit lost on what to prioritise. Let the team know how you will be communicating any further changes if developments roll in from the Gov over the weekend (I.e, should they check their Slack, email, or will you shoot them a text with further info) Reach out if you need any assistance!

05.01.2022 This Thursday we’re chatting to Leanne from The Founders Team all about growing your team! Head on over to their Instagram on Thursday afternoon!

03.01.2022 Get back in your meeting groove A New Year is a great time to draw a line in the sand, shake off all the end of year craziness and get back on track with your team communication rhythms. Heres our top tips for getting in a flow that works for your business: Have your meetings set in advance, and stick to them! If something comes up (because we know it will) reschedule straight away for as close as possible. Constantly shuffling meetings or skipping them gives people the... impression the meeting isnt that important, and maybe neither are they. Have regular one-on-ones. This might be weekly, fortnightly or monthly but spending some quality time focused on on just one team member can be invaluable. It helps them to feel connected to the business and how their role fits into the bigger picture. It may also mean you get a jump on any concerns they have with their work or the workplace, and can be proactive in resolving them before it hits the fan! Have whole team meetings (or whole department for you big guys!). This seems like a no-brainer, but giving your team a chance to get outside their own role or team and learning more about whats happening in the broader business can help to build collaborative relationships across teams founded in respect. What are your most important meetings with your team? What other meetings form part of your meeting rhythms?

02.01.2022 Loved chatting to Katie and Rachel about all things growing a team and thriving in business! Give it a listen and let us know what you think!

01.01.2022 High [even above average] self-esteem is a secret weapon in the world of work (and just the world, really) If you, as a leader (whether a manager or not), have the opportunity to boost someones self-esteem - by giving them a compliment or specific (!) feedback on what they did well, what theyre good at, or even the positive energy they bring to your team - do it! If your self-esteem is suffering of late, give it some attention! Believing in yourself, trusting in your st...rengths and knowing that youve [actually] got this, is such a powerful tool in your business owner/manager kit A great resource for helping with your positive self-talk is @thinkladder, or chat to a loved one
