07.01.2022 At 11am the Shrine Guard will lay a wreath in the heart of our Shrine, the Sanctuary, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in ...Europe, Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), and Krithia Day. RSL Victoria and Friends of the Odd Bods Association hold an annual service on 8 May to commemorate VE Day. On 7 May 1945, German High Command authorised the signing of an unconditional surrender on all fronts. The surrender took effect at midnight on 89th May 1945, with 8th May declared VE Day. Australians joined wholeheartedly in the celebrations. Australian prisoners of war in European camps were liberated and Australian sailors and aircrew began to return home. But the celebrations were tempered by the knowledge that the war in the Pacific was still to be won. Pictured above is 6th Australian Division in But, New Guinea, participating in a thanksgiving service to celebrate the victory in Europe. This service occurred on the eve of amphibious operations which pushed the Japanese military out of their Wewak, New Guinea, base. Today, we also commemorate the Second Battle of Krithia, 68 May 1915, fought on the Gallipoli peninsula. The Australian 2nd Brigade (comprising the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Battalions) were released from ANZAC Cove to reinforce the British and French troops that were making an assault from Cape Helles. The 6th Battalion Association hold an annual service on 8th May commemorating this action. While our physical doors are closed, we remain a living monument: a building with a soul. Throughout our closure period, we will continue to honour the service and sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of Victorians and livestreamed wreath layings on the days where services would have taken place.
