25.01.2022 Wattle Park - KBM - 2020: This project is focused on the use of humble and honest building materials. The designer wanted to celebrate masonry and in particular, blockwork, in tribute to the modernist era and in recognition of the building material often being overlooked for use on residential dwellings. The Adbri Masonry Designer Masonry block re-defines blockwork in a contemporary way and was a key element of the project from the design phase. Th...e light oatmeal colour and exposed aggregate from the smooth honing give the home a light colour palette to contrast against, while still displaying a smooth, yet textured finish. The lasting qualities of masonry ensure this home will stand the test of time and the use of Designer Masonry blockwork sets it apart from others in the neighbourhood. 24.01.2022 2 Unit Development - BML - 2017: In Melbournes Toorak, these semi-detached townhouses have replaced an unremarkable building on a remarkable, sloping site. The objective was to reduce the area and increase the liveability, in response to the future needs of the clients. The result was a sculptural cluster of geometric shapes. The design places emphasis on longevity, flexibility and harmony within the residence. Voids and carved massing enable the control of light, creating d...epth to prioritize privacy. Furthermore, the materials and finishes, notably concrete render and untreated timber, allow for minimal maintenance, which contributes to the timelessness and sustainability of the design. Flexibility is demonstrated through open and versatile planning, which accommodates both private and interactive spaces. Harmony between the inside and the outside is achieved through the ambient courtyard spaces, which connect to the bedrooms. Architect: David Edelman Architects | Builder: ED Enterprises

24.01.2022 Carwoola House - KBM - 2020: Carwoola House is located on a 13.37-hectare block in a rural bush setting. The previous dwelling on the site was destroyed by bushfire in 2017. In response, the form and materiality of the new house have been reinvented and its location re-sited, to redefine the experience and outlook of the site and to ensure the home will be resilient in its environment. The new dwelling is sited in a clearing higher up on the site; free from fuel-load but more... isolated and exposed. The building form responds to this condition by being intentionally strong and robust. The main material is brick, which creates a non-combustible building envelope and anchors into the open, rocky landscape. At the same time, the form is carefully sculpted to create spaces, voids and openings. At the north, a protected external terrace is formed by a brick podium recess, offering an elevated vantage point while sheltering from the wind. At the south, the upper level opens up to capture views. Brick is experienced externally as sculpted openings, while internally the material is experienced as a rich texture and defining boundary to space. Polished concrete floors and white textured finishes complement the light, textured palette. 24.01.2022 Primary Medical Centre - KBM - 2018: Adbri Masonrys Honed bricks in Ebony and Ivory have been expertly installed at this medical centre building. The structure has a welcoming presence and was achieved with the use of complementary design materials, finished off by the polished surface texture of the Adbri Masonry bricks. The bricks were locally produced in Bendigo and feature the Golden Glaze Aggregate. . 23.01.2022 Highbury Grove - KBM - 2018: Highbury Groves framework seeks to articulate architecture as an enveloping medium, providing habitation to the user with an interiorised focus. Light and air are held in tension by the overlapping of architectural elements, creating a masonry shell. The shell is formed from a series of walls at ground level and a further series at 2.8 metres high. These defined masonry walls provide privacy to the northern laneway at street level and a series of... apertures to the northern tree line that allow framed views outward. Space is defined within these parameters, held in balance as a series of architectural moments and views. The volume is light-filled and well ventilated. The volumes contained within the architectural envelope are separated by a series of breakout spaces that allow moments of pause between rooms and volumes. The masonry is run entirely in a stack-bond configuration, both internally and externally, and held in suspension through the use of steel lintels. 22.01.2022 House on the Street - KBM - 2018: The plainness of the block sits to the back, awaiting its complementary companions timber, light and landscape to make a place of consummate calm, liveability and durability. 21.01.2022 Clayfield House - KBM - 2014: Clayfield House is a large family home on a small site in Brisbane. Outer space is given the same priority as internal space. A hierarchy of volumes - big and small, high and low - are organised around a central courtyard that occupies the largest capacity in the house. The yard provides the most rooms in the house. Views across the courtyard facilitate privacy on the long, narrow site with close neighbours on three sides. The central double-heig...ht circulation nave, which crosses the yard, physically separates rooms and allows opportunities for daily interaction. Parallel, double-height masonry walls extend the full length of the site from inside to outsidethe colour and treatment of the block work-appropriate a stone wall. Window joinery is concealed from view, fixed externally allowing the blockwork openings to remain pure and naked, like a ruin. This house uses the benefits of thermal mass in a hot climate. Conventional brick veneer construction is reversed. External light-weight timber and metal cladding provides the requisite thermal cavity and satisfies a local town planning covenant for ""timber and tin"" construction. The external cavity protects the masonry from diurnal temperature fluctuations maintaining a constant internal environment. Architect: Richards & Spence | Builder: Hutchinson Builders | Contractor: Dean O'Neill Bricklaying | Manufacturer: Austral Masonry | Photographer: Alicia Taylor

21.01.2022 13th Beach House - KBM - 2014: The house sits on the edge of the 13th Beach golf course where constant west winds roll over the dunes and across the site. The layout, form and construction of the house are designed to counter the wind and provide privacy from the golfers. The building mass is set behind a pair of brick walls slipping past one another and bending toward the street to encircle a courtyard. The taller of the walls taper to the ground, anchoring into the site. Th...e walls also play a dramatic role as protecting arms bracing the building against the wind and shielding from the street. A covenant prevented visible patterning of brick or block externally, so they are rendered with a heavy spray of White concrete. Internally a traditional limewash was applied to the brickwork providing a soft luminous finish. The lime solution runs into the brickwork highlighting the texture and craft of the brickwork. Deep window reveals they accentuate the sense of mass and fortification of the masonry construction while the solidity of the floor grounds the masonry volume. Materiality and scale define the different zones. Architect: Auhaus Architecture | Builder: Jasada with Ben Jolley | Contractor: M & K Moon Bricklaying

21.01.2022 Mooloolah Drive, Minyama - HHR - 2019: Nestled on a canal, this residence was designed to offer the opportunity for peace and tranquillity as well as serviceability and practicality for a young, vibrant and busy family. The house was designed as the clients forever home. The Owner/builders were driven by a desire to create a beautiful living space with aesthetic appeal, and they also wanted the house to complement their busy lifestyle and to be robust so that it will endur...e the test of time. Working within height restrictions, they were determined not to create a bland, box-like home, instead selecting materials that would promote natural elements, such as charcoal-coloured polished masonry blocks combined with stone tiles, glass and timber. This provides the home with a textural and conventional look, grounding it in its coastal surrounds. Assisting with sun glare from the back canals, Polished Face Designer Masonry Blocks in Charcoal from National Masonry were selected for the external pillars, retaining walls and pool feature walls. To blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living, the use of Polished Face blocks in Charcoal was extended to the interior, featured in the three-storey stairwell, lift shaft, and living and bedroom areas. The use of Designer Masonry blocks has given this project timeless beauty, designed for long life. 20.01.2022 Wickham House - KBM - 2019: In the brief for this project, the client spoke of their love of mid-century and brutalist architecture. They also referenced the fictional home in Hitchcocks thriller North by Northwest, specifically the feeling of weight created by the brick structure, the lightness of the glass/timber and the play of volumes internally. The architects considered how these references might be translated into an Australian suburban context and the familys lifest...yle. They wanted to give the house a sense of weight, almost like a rock sculpture formed on site. A series of black bricks make up the façade to the first floor, with the batches blended to accentuate the natural texture of the blocks. Some bricks were pulled out to suggest the notion of a sculptural skin. The proportions were paired with steel features (windows/entry portals) to give the architecture a sense of weight and height. When entering the house, visitors are greeted with a view of the lap pool and the garden. The crazy paving continues inside, leading you through the corridor and into the main living areas. These spaces are defined by a variety of volumes and changes in the timber ceiling (a reference to the house in North by Northwest). The architects have incorporated the owners references and stories into the design without using specific references, but instead using moments and qualities that are familiar yet unique and new to the owners. 20.01.2022 House at Otago Bay - KBM - 2019: On a lazy bend of the Derwent River, House at Otago Bay by Typology Studio accentuates the drama of living at the waters edge. Connections with the landscape oscillate between enclosure and embrace. A masonry courtyard, colonnade, ledges and terraces soften the distinction and encourage connections between the house and the landscape. The building entry is deliberately solid, drawing you in along a curved masonry wall that follows the contour...s. The living space is perched high, drawing the water close. A ceiling sweeps up to reveal views of Mount Wellington to the west and Mount Direction to the east. The lower-floor bedroom is embedded in the rock, the outlook sheltered as the ground falls away to the water. The west-facing masonry wall folds back from a pivot point to form a deep soffit lined with suspended masonry, and then wraps back into the site to form the terrace that, in time, will feel like a remnant of a previous structure. Deep masonry window reveals create privacy and form seats inside and out. The site process involved numerous sample batches, prototype walls and experimentation with shot blasting techniques, and collaboration with the builder was key to achieving the desired outcome. Locally sourced masonry was custom-manufactured with a bespoke mix to complement the tones of the setting. Refined geometry and carefully selected materials have produced a home that is precise yet textured and warm. 20.01.2022 Edsall Street - KBM - 2019: Conceptually, this projects framework seeks to articulate architecture as an enveloping medium, providing habitation to the user with an interiorised focus. Light and air are held in tension by architectural elements. Masonry walls stretch across the site, providing apertures to the garden and selected neighbouring views. The architecture acts as a mechanism to naturalise the externalities present in the street context and enhance the habitation f...rom within. Heavy-set, strong masonry walls provide privacy to the neighbouring western and north-western commercial zones. The volume is light filled and well ventilated. The two opposing volumes of the new and old are separated by a pause. The old volume is a series of compartmentalised spaces, while the new one is the expression of a larger singular volume that appears to bleed out or dissolve into its surroundings. The ground plane falls away to the south, defining and segmenting the various living areas. Spaces expand and contract, sometimes pulling the landscape into view. 18.01.2022 Trevellyn - KBM - 2020: The Lachlan Parade site is typical of Launceston’s characteristics: undulating hills, steep slopes and difficult access. Design development for the project was based around the requirements of the hillside location, with multiple levels and imposing features. The home is presented as a majestic structure on the hillside, with views extending from the township right down the Tamar River. The living space immerses itself in the scene while forming a coco...on for the occupants. The design takes inspiration from Mid-Century influences and uses strong, grounding forms. Stone crazy cladding, dark finishes and deep timber colours keep the warmth of the interior while creating a classy aesthetic. This is not a dwelling for light, airy spaces, but rather bold, strong founding materials and design fundamentals. The design is internalised through the creation of a Japanese-style garden, light-filled bedroom hallways and a double-storey stone fireplace, all viewed from multiple locations and providing linkages to the internal spaces. Externally, the dwelling displays multiple materials and textures, with the Ebony-coloured honed golden glaze brickwork wall featuring segments of protruding block that add another element of texture. 18.01.2022 Arts Epicentre - KBM - 2020: The Arts Epicentre is a new building that amalgamates Caroline Chisholm Catholic College’s creative programs. The creative hub is a landmark and formalises a new identity for the Churchill Avenue girls’ campus. The building is the result of a series of key architectural moves that respond directly to the site, context and culture of the place. The internal arrangement is curated around the idea of audience and performance mirroring one another. Fo...ur ply-clad light-catchers seemingly hang within the internal performance space; these were derived from a combination of an emblem on the existing building and a celebration of an existing dome structure, and were created through the use of subtraction from the forms. The upper level of the building, to the west and south elevations, is consolidated by a singular banded, slotted aluminium sunscreen, created to control the afternoon summer sun and to celebrate and reflect the building’s interior programs to the college and the wider community. The podium-level profiled brickwork patterning, along the southern side-street elevation, creates a contextual conversation with an adjacent brick house and extends the conceptual narrative of the building into the surrounding community. It was integral that this façade was created in brick, to retain the spirit of the existing street and contextual memory. 18.01.2022 Dollhouse 2.0 - KBM - 2019: Dollhouse 2.0, designed by JC Design Studio in association with Laura Chruscinski Architect, is a family home that works comfortably within its small-footprint, inner-city site of 174 square metres. Designed by a husband-and-wife team as their own home, the dwelling provides functional, flexible spaces and is adaptable for a growing family. The finishes were selected for their longevity and to create a low-maintenance ""forever home."" Midland Bric...k 100 and 200 Series grey concrete blockwork has been used throughout the exterior and interior, providing a textural element that complements the dark metal cladding and window frames. Internally it has been paired with various timber elements to bring out the warmth in the colour of the blockwork. The material was selected for both its aesthetics and practicality, and to reduce the extent of applied finishes and therefore, maintenance. The blockwork modules vary in height, with the occasional band of 90-mm-high blockwork used amongst the 190-mm block to adjust floor-to-floor heights and demarcate window and door heads. In the outdoor living area, blockwork has been used to create in-built seating and planters, including a 200 Series lintel-block across the northern boundary for cascading plants. The occasional split-face block has been used within the outdoor living areas walls to provide a varied backdrop to the planting. The blockwork also acts as thermal mass, heating up in winter via the north-facing void windows, making the home comfortable to live in. 18.01.2022 Rockingham Foreshore Revitalisation - BML - 2020 Place Laboratory was commissioned to develop the detailed design for three key public realm spaces on the Rockingham foreshore in Western Australia. This included an upgrade of the main street, Railway Terrace, converting a carpark into a pedestrian plaza and widening the waterfront promenade. The design connects the city to the sea, creating a place of celebration with a relaxed character that improves the overall sociability ...of the promenade and beachfront. A key focus of the design was to capture a sense of colour, fun and playfulness, with opportunities for the play being an integral aspect of the promenade landscape. The plaza and street use a refined palette of robust, low-maintenance pavement materials that are in keeping with Rockingham’s identity. The paving pattern was developed from a study of local wave patterns; the rhythm of the pattern has been manipulated to interact with the different functions of the public realm. It provides people with subtle visual cues that delineate stopping and staying places and movement and promenading spaces. 18.01.2022 Ivy Lane Tasmania - KBM - 2018: This artistic residence is located in Launceston, Tasmania. It is a monolithic addition to the surrounding urban sprawl, designed for a contemporary business couple. The concept for the project evolved from a pragmatic response to the site, a desire for privacy, and the clients love for entertaining, art and fashion, within their a modest footprint and budget. The design strategy and ethos for a cost-effective build led to the resourceful use ...of recycle or rejected bricks. The desire for a sustainable build led to the use of Adbri Masonry products, as the brick supplier was willing to provide rejected and seconds slimline bricks. The entire brick component of this project consists of reclaimed and reused bricks, which were then painted with a Dulux Black gloss finish. The reclaimed and reused bricks contribute significantly to the residence, adding mass and scale to the dwelling. The layers of texture from within the brick and the layers of vertical and horizontal lines through the stacked bond express the architecture of the dwelling. 18.01.2022 Soulsby Residence - KBM - 2020: The Soulsby residence is a new family home in East Gippsland, Victoria. Designed for a busy family of five, the house has a split personality, with the southern side being minimal in its scale and exposure to the street and the northern side containing expansive glazing and high ceilings, connecting easily to the rear yard and pool. The use of brick was critical in weaving together the functional, thermal and aesthetic aims of the project. On... the southern side, the clean blank wall of the brick garage presents a unique yet restrained presence to the street. On the northern side facing the private backyard, the house opens up with a simple single-pitch roof framing extensive 3.2-metre-high windows along the facade. Interspersed with glazing are panels of bricks, which work to break up the overall composition of the north facade and to set up a terrific dialogue with the dark steel framing and warmer tones of the timber cladding and decking. These same bricks are deployed internally, to accentuate the sense of flow from indoor to outdoor, as well as to provide passive thermal heating and cooling. The freestanding fireplace, coupled with the feature brick wall in the living area, delivers fantastic thermal performance as well as a beautiful focal point at the heart of the home. 17.01.2022 Prince Edward Townhouses - KBM - 2020: This development, situated in the Melbourne suburb of McKinnon, comprises eleven three-bedroom, two-storey townhouses, and seven single-level apartments on a third level. The project investigates how to introduce a contemporary design solution for a large building into a suburban context, in a way that enhances the qualities of both. It also explores the use of a typically domestic material brick, in this case, Adbri Maso...nry Designer Masonry brick in Steel River Gravel with a honed finish. The project utilises its unique qualities, small-grain texture, colour and malleability. The architects were able to break down the parts of the building into smaller-scale articulated forms. The resultant exterior aesthetic has a strong domestic feel, both in the scale of the architectural elements and in the texture of the materials used, including the face brick external walls, planters and combination of metal and timber screens. A typically flat wall is transformed to provide movement and visual interest down its length, with sections of transparency within the bricklaying, presenting solid and texture. The punctuated and textured masonry base and homogenous cladding above provide a building that is richly dynamic in a modern vernacular while also responsive to the surrounding context. 17.01.2022 Concrete House - KBM - 2015: Concrete House is a new family house located in Wembley Perth, WA. The Owner had a keen interest in the work of Perth Architect Iwan Iwanoff, especially his use of Grey Concrete Blockwork. The core idea of this project was to create a new form of the family home that was flexible and adaptable to the changing needs of the five-member family. The Concrete Blocks were sourced from Midland Brick, WA. The Products used included 100 series (10.01) bloc...kwork for the main double-leaf thermal mass walls, 10.12 + 15.12 Lintel Blocks for downpipe recesses, end walls, and the feature letterbox + 20.01 blocks laid end on to create Breeze Blocks to the Main Outdoor living area, Lounge Balcony and Pool Screen Wall. The Concrete Blocks are the primary design element used for all walls in the project. They are expressed both internally and externally in their face format for their robustness, thermal properties and architectural qualities. The use of the blockwork in combination with the Soft Landscaping and Spotted Gum Timber creates a dramatic backdrop to enhance the Owner's collection of the 1950s and 1960's vintage furniture. The soft colour of the blocks perfectly complements the style of the House. 17.01.2022 Hall Chadwick - KBM - 2018: Hall Chadwick was established in Longreach more than forty years ago, and this project references the clients longstanding relationship with outback Queensland. The public floor welcomes visitors in an intimate foyer before opening up to take advantage of the voluminous 4.8-metre-high ceiling space. A timber truss structure is suspended over the main entryway, guiding visitors through to the boardroom, a stylized barn structure. A client lounge bl...eeds into the main cafe area, wrapping around the staircase connecting the two floors and providing a vertical street within the business. The cafe features a restaurant-style bar/kitchen, the benchtops an abstract reference to the channel country in wet season. Arriving at the top of the stairs you are welcomed by a hub of activity. The central connector is the utility area, offering a lighter barrier between the spaces and avoiding any solid vision impairments. When standing within the utility area, you are not hidden behind a solid wall, but able to catch glimpses of the activity beyond. The blocks have been extended through the adjacent collaboration spaces, creating the base support for the booth seating, akin to the home-style construction you might see in a rural setting. 16.01.2022 B House - KBM - 2018: This bespoke two-level, three-bedroom townhouse within a historical neighbourhood in Bendigo, Victoria consists of a refined palette of materials. The materials were selected based on the simple criteria of them being low-maintenance and hardwearing, yet textural and playful in spirit, to enable the creation of a light-filled interior. Austral Porcelain blocks and Wedge Breeze blocks were identified early in the concept for a ""retro feel."" The beautifu...l softness of the honed finish and white appearance provided flexibility, allowing the products to be implemented across many elements, including the external wall cladding, solid fencing, privacy screening, internal partition walls and balustrading. The Wedge Breeze blocks create screening elements within the design, providing layering, filtered light and privacy. Several external courtyards are positioned throughout the plan, including the sculptural garden, allowing for private areas of the home to open onto green spaces, and allowing light and breezes to enter the internal spaces while maintaining security and privacy. The external solid blocks, laid in a stack bond pattern, seamlessly flow from inside to out, the honed finish providing a subtle texture and juxtaposition to the polished black concrete floors. 15.01.2022 Lawson Poole Pavilion - KBM - 2020: Lawson Poole Pavilion is the vigilant watcher of a great sporting expanse, situated in the metropolitan area of Cranbourne, Melbourne. It boasts community views of 270 degrees that enthral the spectator into appreciating the landscape and the many different games held on the reserve. The view is beautifully framed by reclaimed timber trusses that stretch from inside the community room, to the angled canopy outside. The exposed timber struct...ure holds an essence of connection for patrons as the natural material is warm and subtle. The community room itself rests on the strength of the reclaimed timber columns, and the interior is lined with this material. The building is embraced by a combination of timber cladding and masonry blockwork. The blockwork is an essential element that highlights different parts of the building as you walk around it. The palette has been described as being cleansing for the eye, serving to reset appreciation for the building. From the moment you arrive, you are greeted with a harmonious fusion of natural materials an angled blockwork wall fused with steel and timber cuts straight through to the entrance. The two-tone application of the blockwork highlights the other materials and is an expression of the project’s duality and multipurpose function. 15.01.2022 Curtin Medical School & Innovation Street - BML - 2018: Curtin University's Innovation Street and Medical School are the first significant projects to be realised according to the aims and ambitions established by the Greater Curtin Masterplan. It heralds the coming together of past and future, creating a physical and symbolic link by stitching the old campus with the new campus at this critical northern gateway. The projects establish a benchmark for future masterplans in te...rms of best practice outcomes for urban campus environments and a public realm that puts peoples experience front and centre. It also signals new design language and a unique Curtin identity for future development of the public realm, in terms of the material palette, paving patterns, spatial hierarchy, urban infrastructure and furniture. The Medical School provides a transformative teaching facility. The building and external spaces are conceived as a singular proposition, allowing teaching and learning to not be restricted to the confines of the built form. Internal and external spaces have been carefully choreographed and orchestrated to provide physical and visual flow. The concept was to design outdoor spaces as creative catalysts, where an inspiring garden setting can facilitate social interaction, heightened sensory engagement, collaboration and the opportunity for new ideas and innovation to emerge. 14.01.2022 The Old Synagogue - KBM - 2020: Originally built as a synagogue but long left dormant, this prominent landmark sits at the heart of Fremantle’s broad network of tourist destinations. Through years of modifications and alterations, the remaining structures left many stories to tell and a unique opportunity to restore this majestic building, ready for its next chapter. For the entire project team, working sensitively with the existing heritage fabric was a key consideration. Ar...cadia was engaged to undertake concept design to develop the architectural intent and overall planning strategy for the precinct, proposing clear identities for each of the spaces. The design intends to showcase the existing structures wherever possible and to ultimately ensure that the scale of any new built form would not compete with the heritage fabric. Establishing a clear distinction in material language between old and new was important in the project, and the Austral Masonry GB blocks from Brickworks help to achieve this. Block textures and patterns have been utilised to continue the datums lines struck across the face of the heritage buildings and to play on the notion of ornamentation within a contemporary context. 13.01.2022 Moama House - KBM - 2020: Situated in a spacious housing estate west of Moama, New South Wales, this home is minimal inside and out, leaving standard building products from which the house is constructed visible. Given the spacious site and open boundary fencing, presenting an unimpressive collage of clotheslines, rainwater tanks and airconditioner units, the environment provided an opportunity to explore a courtyard design in this case, with two lineal forms that shield on...e of the primary outdoor spaces. Entry is to a large foyer area that connects the two forms. This space opens to the swimming pool, courtyard and beyond. Here, you can proceed into either of the two wings: To the left is the children’s area, comprising of living room, three bedrooms, study, bathroom, powder room and laundry; to the right is the functional kitchen area, dining, family room and main bedroom with a high raked ceiling. Feature brickwork is used internally throughout this space. Large windows open onto the central courtyard, which captures the external brickwork and reflects the internal finish. 13.01.2022 Inverdon House - KBM - 2017: A house for a soon-to-be-retired couple, Inverdon House certainly challenges the norm in the small regional town where it is located. This is mainly for its use of hard-wearing, low-maintenance masonry. Typically hidden in paint, plasterboard and render, here the material has instead been left exposed, revealing the structure in such a way that allows the craftsmanship to be on the show. This requires it to be made with care, pride and a certain l...evel of expertise. In this process a new skill is passed on to younger tradespeople; and if the demand for quality is there, this skill set will continue. The current local housing model mostly ignores passive design principles, closing down to the elements rather than working with the climate. At Inverdon House, only the two bedrooms are airconditioned for especially humid nights. The carport features a breezeblock screen that provides a pragmatic solution to the impact of the harsh western sun, allowing filtered light and ventilation through to the outdoor area beyond. The two main blade walls, which anchor the house in its setting, run from outside to inside, to out again, assisting in the blurring of boundaries between interior and exterior, vital for tropical living. 13.01.2022 Penguin Bakery - KBM - 2020: This project is a new bakery with a future single apartment above. The building was designed to complement and enhance the streetscape while referencing the dominant landscape feature of Mount Montgomery to the south of the town of Penguin in Tasmania. The building is articulated in two forms: the single-storey part with a parapeted shopfront, which marries to the adjacent existing shopfronts and ties the new project into the existing streetscape;... and the double-storey section with a gable roof that emulates other similar buildings in the main street. The street front of this section is set back to create an alfresco seating area. The gable roof extends over the alfresco area, providing an all-weather, sun-filled cover, capturing views to the coastline and the Bass Strait. The set-back frontage and extended roof canopy also frame a view to Mount Montgomery behind, and the roof profile matches the profile of the mountain. Masonry blockwork is an essential element of the design. The versatile product was selected to provide fire-rated separation to the existing shop on site and to reflect and respond to the current material expression of the streetscape. In conjunction with other claddings and finishes, the masonry cladding articulates the forms and facades to create a building that fits in with and also enhances the main street of Penguin. 12.01.2022 Bernacki Residence - KBM - 2019: An extremely particular client (the architect) sought to produce a house that would best suit themselves and their lifestyle. Bernacki Residence is a contemporary addition to the surrounding urban sprawl, featuring solid stacked brick blade walls. White slimline 390 x 90 x 90 mm brickwork from Adbri Masonry was selected for the project. The brick surface finish is etched and blasted to add character, shadow and a layering of textures to the fa...çade. The brick bond is stacked, to reflect the grid-like layout of the home and to serve as a further expression of the vertical and horizontal lines at play. The selection of Adbri Masonry brickwork has contributed significantly to the success of the home through its timeless, natural appearance, and its perfect application and positioning within the project as a whole. With a simple and neutral palette, it assists in framing the façade and adds formal breaks in the style. By focusing attention on the specific brickwork elements of the house and their connection with the landscaped continuum, this home provides the perfect opportunity for repose. 11.01.2022 Lindisfarne - KBM - 2018: This impressive house was designed by the owners of the property, in conjunction with the architect. The architect specified Adbri Masonry 200 Series and 100 Series blocks in Ivory, with a lightweight unit that was rendered for painting. The black-painted render creates a brilliant contrast with the lightly coloured face block and sets the house apart from the other homes on the street. 09.01.2022 Edithvale Lifesaving Club - KBM - 2020: The Edithvale Life Saving Club is a new double-storey building that replaces an existing 100-year-old weatherboard structure. The new building provides lifesaving facilities, an observation room, a new community space and a kiosk, along with a store, public amenities and change rooms. The building’s design is founded in a contrast between materiality and the built form. Nautical forms and themes are used throughout to reinforce the prox...imity and relationship with water: the lightness and speed of a racing yacht, the linearity of a cruise ship, the triangulation of a mainsail and the robustness of a tugboat all come together in the form of this building. The project’s materiality contrasts with these seafaring forms, anchoring the building to the site through masonry construction. The careful articulation of the blockwork and concrete, selected for their weight and malleability, helps to achieve these dynamic forms, which have a kinetic relationship with each other. The blockwork and concrete finishes were selected for their ability to weather the harsh coastal conditions and be transformed by them. Like the ever-changing beach, windswept sand will slowly act on the masonry, revealing the aggregate beneath the finished layers. With each passing season, the built form will remain unchanged as the materials evolve to subtlety reflect the changing conditions the building faces. 08.01.2022 Abbotsford House - KBM - 2018: This modest rear addition to a beautiful existing Victorian home presents a dialogue between new and old masonry architecture. A set of poorly constructed lean-to structures was demolished and replaced with a small extension. The new pavilion utilises simple and efficient planning to re-orientate the occupants life around an internal courtyard and a new northern aspect. The compact footprint maximises usable outdoor area for the young family an...d provides amenity and outlook from multiple aspects. The architecture addresses the context of the heritage home through a formal relationship and material dialogue. The original form stands tall, grounded via a bluestone plinth with red pressed-clay brickwork and a hipped roof. The new pavilion inverts and acknowledges these qualities with a lowered roof form, an in situ concrete datum and contrasting brickwork. Adbri Masonrys Architectural Brick was chosen for its uniform finish and deep colour, allowing the heritage fabric to sit comfortably in dialogue with the addition. The design team collaborated closely with the builder and contractor to sample a suitable mortar mix and jointing style, tying the masonry into the surrounding palette of exterior and interior finishes. 08.01.2022 Fairfield Hacienda - KBM - 2014: On the fringe of Melbourne's inner suburbs, this new family home sits in an established residential street of Victorian villas and Californian bungalows. From the footpath, the Fairfield Hacienda with its angled roof fits into the landscape of single-level homes, effortlessly picking up the street's original pattern of hipped and gabled roof forms. A closer look, however, reveals that this new house sits behind a sunny, walled courtyard. This ...room without a roof, except for a sheltering courtyard tree, is an extension of the living and dining spaces that open onto it. The enclosed courtyard is located to the north of the house and creates a buffer between the street and the home, allowing the living spaces to open up to and access northern light and warmth. 07.01.2022 Wonwondah House - KBM - 2018: This house is set in a stark landscape of harsh light, parched sandy soils and extreme summer heat. Unlike the sprawling vernacular of many rural Australian buildings, the design strategy here is one of containment within a tight, cube-like form. The house braces itself against the elements to provide refuge from what is, at times, an inhospitable environment. In this context, there is a strong emphasis on the use of robust materials and minimal ...detailing. Masonry, used for all external walls, was chosen for its durability, thermal performance and the textural qualities offered by split-face block. Although modest in scale, the design creates the sense that the house is larger than it really is, through the layering of internal spaces. The smooth masonry walls of the central stair act as a spatial divider between the open-plan living area and the kitchen. These walls run over both levels of the house and also serve to increase thermal mass. The slender grid of steel framing on the exterior has been designed to support large sunshades, protecting the most exposed elevations and expanding the living spaces into these shaded volumes. 07.01.2022 Ivy Lane - KBM - 2020: Ivy Lane, located in Launceston, Tasmania, is a beautifully inspired Mid-Century addition to the surrounding urban sprawl. The concept for this project evolved from a pragmatic response to the site, a desire for privacy and an internal courtyard space, and the clients’ love of entertaining, art and fashion within a modest site footprint. A play of scale and proportion with layered textures and materiality was requested. The... outcome for this residence revolves around the definitions of space: each space throughout the home in framed and divided by types of materiality. Beautiful stacked blockwork strikes through the dining room, out into the internal courtyard. The blade walls slice through the home from the external environment into the internal environment. The outcome is a balance of layered textures, definitions of scale and proportion. The product chosen for this residence was 390mm x 90mm x 90mm Adbri Masonry blocks in white with a standard surface finish. These were locally sourced in Tasmania and contribute significantly to the project by setting the atmosphere of the home. The blockwork also gives the dwelling a unique sense of grounding and stance within the surrounding urban sprawl. 07.01.2022 Act for Kids Child and Family Centre of Excellence, Townsville - KBM - 2015: In the public realm, it is useful to consider the legacy of foundational buildings and how we contextualise our work. The ACT for Kids project at James Cook University in Townsville looked to the context of Jim Birrells late 1960s foundation buildings in off-form concrete and grey face concrete blockwork, simple materials with plasticised forms. The new building contains administration, daycare and... therapy spaces, and deals with children who have been exposed to abuse and neglect. Conceived as a concrete block perimeter, the building is sculpted around two stands of trees, one each side of therapy spaces. A bullnose block was used as the standard unit and laid to achieve two patterns a double stretcher stack bond, and a double stretcher-stretcher bond. The former is used on the front façade where the unit by the unit construction of the building can be felt. The latter is used on the sidewalls, chasing the contours up the hill. The two courses meet idiosyncratically at the acute corner of the site. The project is an architectural response to physical context and children in need of this facility. Through masonry, it offers firmness with an overriding sense of delight. 06.01.2022 Epicure Residence - BML - 2019: Epicure in Kew is a boutique development of six apartments, developed, designed and built by Kincaid Developments. Adbri Masonry products were used in the construction of the building and the landscaping. Eco-Trihex pavers were chosen for their unique shape, as they provide visual interest to the terrace areas, as well as for their excellent permeability. The pavers were used to help keep the existing jacaranda tree healthy. The mediums between the brick, timber and black metal have resulted in a well-considered colour palette. 05.01.2022 Elwood House - KBM - 2017: Elwood House features the adaptive reuse and transformation of a cold, dark and inefficient 1915 Edwardian house into a warm and light-filled family home that has direct connections to the outside. The new material palette of concrete block, brick, timber and polished concrete complements the original red brick and stucco house. Full-height, north-facing steel-framed doors and windows allow natural light into the new living area extension and open u...p the modern living spaces to the rear garden. Black glazed bricks were selected for the dividing fireplace element between the living and dining areas, accentuating the drama of the different textures and materials. The primary new building material used was half-height Designer Block in Pearl Grey, laid in a unique quarter bond further to differentiate them from traditional grey Besser block walling. The owners took great comfort in the products chosen the higher-quality off-white cement, different sands, slight oxide tint, smoother texture and the in-built water and stain-resistant qualities used in the manufacture of the block. Architect: Preston Lane | Builder: Filippone Constructions | Contractor: Mick Wood | Manufacturer: National Masonry | Product: Designer Range - Smooth Face - Pearl Grey

05.01.2022 Malvern East Home - KBM - 2018: The brief for this project was to demolish a poorly planned existing extension, reconfigure the existing rooms and then provide a light-filled contemporary extension that opens to the backyard. The new extension is orientated to the north and incorporates a swimming pool within the landscape. A significant amount of work to the existing house was required, and careful material selection assisted with keeping costs down. At the heart of this is ...the Pearl Grey concrete block walls (which didnt require further finishing trades); and the more labour-intensive and expensive timber claddings were used in strategic places as part of value management strategies. The main concept for the rear extension was to create an organisational structure of northsouth walls to define the living spaces. Three of these walls, including the two external walls, are constructed from exposed blockwork, and a central articulated timber blade wall separates the deck from the living space. The heavy, exposed blockwork walls contrast with the lightweight weatherboard cladding of the original house, providing a clear distinction. 02.01.2022 City Beach Residential College Additions - KBM - 2019: The City Beach Residential College Addition provides living and study support facilities for gifted and talented students from the country who attend some of Perths best secondary schools. Functions include after-hours tuition, music, study, recreation, lounge, gymnasium, conference, administration, dining, health and psychological support spaces, a commercial kitchen, laundries and archives. The site is size restricted ...and steeply sloping, with mature native and ficus trees further reducing available space. Rather than view these as constraints, the architects designed an addition that exploits the potential of existing trees to help shape movement and spaces while reducing bulk to the streetscape and heat loading from the intense western sun. Large concrete block walls echo the tree canopy form in a gentle and dynamic relationship. These walls are semi-embedded into the northern site, breaking free as the natural site level falls, oscillating between the grounded and the weightless, the heavy and the delicate. This curving language continues in the creation of a protected courtyard, screened from intense wind and providing privacy from the street, opening to an existing building and the students dwellings. Concrete block walls extend into the garden, configuring spaces while binding internal recreation and dining areas with exterior spaces. Finer detailing relates to the heroic period of Perth modernism (screen walls) in City Beach and the poetic, functional brise-soleil of the renowned architect Iwan Iwanoff. Reflected light from west-facing screen block walls creates a soft, calm and delicate atmosphere in the counselling spaces, places where students are at their most vulnerable.
