25.01.2022 Another resource to support the Karen community....stay safe :)

25.01.2022 Today the premier of Victoria declared an official state of disaster for the whole of Victoria. This is to be taken very seriously, and has some very real imp...lications for us Victorians. Regional Victoria has been placed again in stage 3 restrictions, beginning this Wednesday 5 August at 11:59pm. This means that we can leave the house for four reasons only: medical appointments, shopping for essentials, work or exercise. Masks must be worn at all times outside the house. Exact details for restrictions to regional Victoria can be found here: https://bit.ly/3gp7zMS. Melbourne has entered stage four restrictions, which are detailed here: https://bit.ly/2Xloect. No regional Victorian should enter Melbourne for any reason. Police will be enforcing restrictions with greater vigour than at earlier periods. This is a very difficult time for all of us, but these measures are in place to save lives and keep us safe. To our valued clients, the BCH team will continue to communicate with you as we manage this change. Your care and support remain our priority. We will get through this, and we will get through it more quickly if we all do the right thing. Working together - though apart - as one community.

24.01.2022 More information (regarding social distancing, COVID-19 etc) is coming through in other languages. Please share with anyone who may benefit from this Dinka resource https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATG5GNOpfwg&feature=youtu.be

24.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the official launch of United Nations 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence. Violence against women exists in every country, culture and community. RESPECT WOMEN: CALL IT OUT!

24.01.2022 Keeping connected while socially distancing is a challenge we are all facing. Young people and their families from acoss Ballarat, Horsham, Nhill and Ghana have come together to produce 'Awa'- our intercultural choir project! The lyrics of 'Awa' (in the Fante dialect) translate to, "I'm excited to hug you". Very fitting for our current global situation! Supported by our project Musical Director Stella Savvy of CocoSounds, with members of CMY Ballarat/ Wimmera, video and sound production by Rex and Bella Hardware, and funded by Department of Premier and Cabinet.

24.01.2022 An easier to read version of the article in the current issue of the Ballarat Times. While the production team start syncing up all the videos and artworks for our YouTube clip, we will start planning our online "red carpet" launch event for late July - woo hooo! https://timesnewsgroup.com.au//awa-project-is-a-musical-v/

23.01.2022 Today, Luna shares his incredible story with us. From early beginnings in Togo and Benin in Africa, to finding his way to Ballarat, Luna shares his family's journey, and explores what life is like today in Ballarat. Thank you Luna for sharing your story with us <3 #refugeeweek #yearofwelcome #refugeeweek2020

23.01.2022 Yes, today is RU OK day! The message is "theres more to say after R U OK?" What if someone answers "no"? - take time to listen... - encourage taking action and finding support - check in regularly to see how your friend/family member is travelling "A conversation can change a life, right?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erHLP29tzPE

21.01.2022 Ballarat YAG member, Magbul Choul, gives us a glimpse of what it was like for him growing up in Ballarat - posing questions about how we can prevent this from happening to anyone, let alone children and how can we better support each other. Thank you for sharing your story, Magbul <3 "I was walking home at age 10 and got racially, verbally abused on the street by an old man. I tried to discuss it with my mum and she said 'it's normal around here'. That changed my who...le perspective and made me realise that I had to suppress my emotions in these sort of situations. Most diverse communities don't address mental health issues because it's just not culturally appropriate so if you know something is up with your friends, give them a little message, show empathy and try to understand the situation. That can be good enough to help and show support. That's how you can start change; acknowledging racism." We need to keep calling out racism. We need to continue the conversations and actions that will dismantle oppressive systems. #racism #racismaustralia #blacklivesmatter

21.01.2022 Let's all do what we can to try to stop Ballarat from needing to go into Lockdown.. It is not okay to visit these places until further advised by the Premier. Stay home, stay safe, stay connected.

12.01.2022 We are now moving into the production stage of the Awa project, where Rex, Bella and Emilia will bring all of the fabulous videos you have made together, (and artworks of Adinkra symbols) to create a mass choir and dance ensemble! We are also planning our Red Carpet online launch event for late July :) We had 5 young people in key roles as project Mentees during the making of the Awa video. Abby Ashmore worked with Musical Director Stella Savy from Coco Sounds to get... people involved and to pass on information to participants. Here's a little about Abby! Name: Abby Ashmore (she/they), mostly known as Abby. Lives: Ballarat Cat or dog person? Dog!! Plain chips or salt and vinegar? Neither, it's definitely lime and black pepper, obviously! Favourite ice cream: Mango! If you could be an animal, what would you be? "When I was little I used to want to be a pelican cause they can swim, walk n fly. But now I think I would be a ring tail possum, just cause they're fun". Who inspires you? "I'm inspired by Adam Eli, not a world leader but a leader surrounding LGBT+ rights and a big supporter of body positivity, POC and Jewish visibility". Strongest childhood memory? "Dancing around the kitchen with my muvva x" Favourite things to do when you have spare time? "Surrounding myself with music and friends whether that be listening, dancing or playing". What's cool about living in Ballarat? The people! Though it's a small town everyone is doing amazing things for the world and to better our community. What's NOT so cool? "I feel education surrounding respectful relationships, multiculturalism and self love should be more present. Issues surrounding stolen land, the church and accepting and respecting the differences and value of people around us still exist and are very prevalent in lots, if not all, of our lives". If you could be anywhere else in the world right now, where would you be? "I love Ballarat and I love the community here but I would love to be in New Zealand and have the opportunity to learn about Mari culture and connect with the land there". How have COVID-19 days/months been for you? "Isolation has given me a lot of time to self reflect which has been very healing but also quite overwhelming at times which has been challenging my typical self care methods which would typically include seeing live music, talking to friends, asking advice of my grandma over a cup of tea, sharing food or visiting unfamiliar places. It has been very introspective and overwhelming at the same time". Thanks for all that you contribute Abby! :)
