23.01.2022 What is the one single attribute that stands above all else in the pursuit of personal success or performance -- or for any other type of performance for that matter? Experience? Skill? Knowledge?... Opportunity? All are very important and very beneficial as you take your steps towards your goals and desires, but in my opinion, none of them is the one single attribute that stands above all else. Is it: Confidence? Insight? Goals? Motivation? Once again, close. Each is very beneficial and very important. However, I do not believe that any of them is the one single attribute that will have the most significant effect on your ability to reach the lofty heights to which you aspire. My choice for the number one attribute in the pursuit of any meaningful outcome -- personal, professional and all points between is: Attitude! And I will take a guess here, and say that you probably already had this one at the top if not very close at least of your list. Each and every day, I continue to see the advantages of having the right attitude. But how do you know when your attitude is right? Well, to be totally honest, I think we all know when our attitude is on point or not. So let's leave it at that. Let me put it back to you. You will know whether or not you are on the money with your attitude. Now speaking of me putting it back on you, let's have a look at the question that I am often asked around the subject of attitude: How do I change my attitude when I realise it's not what it needs to be? Simple. With one decision, you can change your attitude. Right here, right now. Forget about the excuses! My attitude is wrong because of this situation, or my mood is because of this person or that. These situations or people can only have an effect on you if you let them. Once again, change your attitude about why your mindset is where it is. Change your thinking. Take back control of yourself and of the influence the situation or person is having on you. Your attitude is your responsibility. You have the power to make it good or bad. Accept the challenge of each and everyday having the right attitude and in doing so, make sure that... The Journey Continues!

20.01.2022 As we know and have probably witnessed first hand the familiar voice, the old voice, the less experienced voice doesn’t always get heard. But the new voice, the voice of a person with initials before or after their name, the voice that comes from afar these voices get listened to, they get heard and in many cases, they get acted upon. Therefore my question to you right now is what voices are you hearing but are not truly listening to? Read more from my recent blog post at: https://coachbillnelson.click/voices

18.01.2022 Are we present in times of difficulty, making an effort to understand the truths that are being revealed? Is there an appetite, an aspiration to embrace the difficulty and engage with the learnings that can take place, the transformative growth opportunities that may be well hidden within the difficulty but opportunities that non the less exist. Mustering ability and desire to embrace a level of discomfort and therefore harnessing the scope of the difficulty to expand our o...wn capacity. Or are we merely looking for the quickest and easiest way to remove ourselves from the situation we find ourselves in? Pushing the difficulty away or pretending it does not exist or that nothing can be gained because of it. How you see things determines what you will get from the experience. The choice is yours.

18.01.2022 As we slowly and hopefully methodically move out of Covid-19 and hustle towards new horizons there are obviously many factors that we need to consider. Some from the past but all for the future! 1. What do you now know that you didn't realise before Covid-19? 2. What things have changed in your life that doesn't need to go back to the way they were?... 3. What have you learned about yourself in isolation that could bring benefit to others? 4. Has anything changed re the 'big picture'? And if so, how will you go about achieving it? 5. From being insolation, do you now see the world differently? 6. Has what is essential to you changed? 7. Have you developed new ways of looking and interacting with others? 8. And from a few weeks ago...What emotions do you want to practice every day?

18.01.2022 A snapshot from last weeks Bayer Animal Health conference in Brisbane. You can tell the level of trust within an organisation's culture through their preparedness to talk openly and honestly with each other. A huge thank you to our good friend Rob Knox for taking part in this session.

18.01.2022 Being in confinement and isolation can lead to significant breakthroughs and paradigm shifts if we are to frame our situation and circumstance differently. Right now, it is reasonable and understandable to be asking a lot of "WHY" questions... -Why is this happening?... -Why can't I leave my house? And these questions and more importantly, the answers should be explored and understood, but only to a degree. For the most part, a 'Why' question can be both negative and reactive. And if we are to spend a great deal of time in a negative and reactive headspace, it will not be long before we are taken down a rabbit hole that will become quite difficult to get out of. Even when things are going right for us, we tend to look for the negative, to notice threats or to identify weakness. It is during a time like the present that we should work hard to find a reason to be optimistic. We create purpose through resilience, and we do this by asking different questions. Questions that are all about what is, or what could be right in our world. Therefore the majority of our questions and thinking needs to be truthfully positive and proactive. Remember though there is a difference between being positive and being optimistic. Positivity can sometimes be about saying things are right when they aren't ( Na, its all good mate!). Optimism isn't naivety, and it is not devoid of reality, it based on the focus of making the future better. The optimistic proactive questions need to take us forward from where we currently are and not hiding us from reality. But so that we can see our way ahead and while doing so, bring with an element of control, confidence, purpose and when answered a sense of achievement. You need to make sure that the majority of your questions are based around "What" -What am I going to do today to help someone else? -What can I do to better adjust to the current set of circumstance? -What learning and growth can I bring into my life today? -What can I do today to show empathy? -What will I do to make the most of the opportunity I am presented with or create opportunities for myself and others? So a simple approach going forward...for every negative reactive 'Why' question pose two positive proactive 'What' questions. The Journey Continues!

17.01.2022 Tomorrow will be the same (in some respects) as today, yesterday and last Wednesday and probably any other day you wish to name: same food, same conversations, same places you visit, same expectations, same people and interactions, same outcomes. But in another way, tomorrow could be completely different from today or yesterday or last Wednesday for that matter. What is the main ingredient for creating this difference?... You. What will tomorrow bring that makes it different to any other day comes down to the choice you will make when you wake tomorrow morning: the decision as regards which single direction you will take from the two options that you have available. Tomorrow you will either decide to be a passenger or a driver in your life. You continue to wake each and every day and set a course for today’s events. Not by being so organised and structured that you fail to witness the spontaneity that the day will bring; but by having a plan and attitude and a desire to make sure that by day’s end you have done what you can to get the most out of the day and, more importantly, the most out of your self. However high the level of expectation that others set around you, it is below what you expect of yourself. You welcome the opportunity, the challenges, the prospects that the day will bring. And in the end, there is no fear of failure. Why? Because now you cannot really fail. Hopefully, there will always be a tomorrow, and tomorrow will bring with it the opportunity for you to have another go at the things you didn’t get quite right today. A passenger or a driver? The decision is yours. The Journey Continues!

15.01.2022 Einstein once said, The significant problems we face cannot be solved by thinking at the same level at which they were created! The statement basically suggests that if you want a better result, you must expand your thinking to a different level so that you may achieve a better result. So many times in life, you are exposed to a new agenda through interaction with different people and situations. ... You observe these new situations and ideas and think about the opportunities that they could present for you in the environment in which you operate. You cannot wait to get home to see if the same ideas that have worked for others will work for you. This all sounds very well and good in theory, except for this little view of the situation: If we do what others have done, we will only end up with what others have got. So what is wrong with that? I hear you say. In a lot of cases, probably nothing. But before we draw a line in the sand and take sides, let me pose this to you. Take the new idea or initiatives and find out everything you can about it. Then ask yourself, How does this idea truly apply to my situation, and what do I have to do to take it up a level and make it better? First, you have to create an outline of the idea, secondly, work out how this applies to what it is you require; and then finally, design a strategy to implement the new procedure. If all of this is done at a higher level than previously, the results will be greater than those ever achieved initially. In all of this, the positives are that you have to think and create at a different level from that which created the original concept, thus using self-education techniques. Because you have broken down the idea to its purest form and recreated it, you have a sense of ownership. With a sense of ownership, you have the motivation and desire to see the project through to its completion. Because the project is on a grander scale, the results are going to be bigger and better. You have a sense of ownership and accomplishment, and so you are motivated to see all areas worked to their true potential. The Journey Continues!

14.01.2022 An excerpt from my latest Blog post... Getting started in most things is key, but even then getting started doesn’t always determine where you will end up, how you will get there or how long it will take but at least you are now in the game and moving forward. The reality of getting started is that it increases your opportunity to determine what comes next, and once that is realised you are no longer starting you are on your way. 14.01.2022 A few sample questions that I posed to the subscribers of our monthly newsletter "The Full Nelson". 1. What excuses are you using that in real terms are holding you back and getting you know-where? 2. If you had your time over, what would be the one thing you would do again for the first time?... 3. What have you let go of that you didn’t want to, but now the time has passed you realise it was a smart move? What should you let go of now? 4. Are the reasons your buttons can get pressed really that important? 5. When was the last time you purposefully and consciously went out of your way to help someone you didn’t know? 6. Is there a reason to change or refine the filter from which you see the world? 7. What thinking do you constantly push away? 8. Are you enabling something or someone whom you shouldn’t? 9. Is giving advice always the right move? Why? 10. What are your personal values? And how are they utilised? To subscribe http://www.totalperformanceconcepts.com.au/news/

10.01.2022 A small excerpt from the latest edition of The Full Nelson newsletter. Subscribe at https://coachbillnelson.click/newsletter Why, when, and how do you think? I know you think in various ways each and every day, but what I am asking about is specific, proactive, problem preventing or solving, vision defining, action orientated thought. ... The thing is, the theory of thought is easy, but as we all know the practical reality of the thought process is not so easy. One of the reasons being that in Western culture we don’t recognise prolonged thinking as a particularly useful pastime. We can easily rationalise the worth of physical work but find it a lot harder to rationalise the value of psychological work. Words such as imagery, visualisation, creative thinking, problem-solving are all part of modern day language in regard to increased performance. These are all psychology specific words that basically boil down too different but specific acts of mindset process. Consider for a moment with everything that goes on in your life is there a need to re-cultivate the art of reflection? In reflective thought, a person examines underlying assumptions, core beliefs, and knowledge, while drawing connections between apparently disparate pieces of information. Even the most intuitive forms of thinking often require stimulus and inspiration. Take the time and make the effort to increase and improve your thinking process and as you do realise that you are continuing to ensure that The Journey Continues!

09.01.2022 Although restrictions are starting to be lifted it is still vitally important that you be in tune with yourself and your emotions regularly, every day at the very least. Not only recognising your current emotional state but being proactive in identifying and then practising certain emotions. Remember, Emotions need motion. So here are some examples of emotion that you might practice every day:... -Love -Triumph -Joy -Gratitude -Excitement -Interest -Pride -Amusement -Inspiration -Awe -Kindness -Trust -Expectation -Appreciation However you must also recognise the emotions that is already in play, both positive and negative. Enhance the positive and deal with the negative, and as you do, please consider the following: a. It will happen Accept that you will get irritated, upset, and angry at someone or something at some point. But then make sure your response is entirely different to your reaction. Your reaction may be completely involuntary. However, your response is something you should always have complete control over. b. Know your triggers. Emotional triggers are the equivalent of the dentist hitting a nerve in your tooth. These triggers are unique to each of us. Learn what your triggers are and be aware of how you then shape your response from them. Take the time to understand: -The trigger -Your reaction -Corresponding response It is not always about attempting to remove the trigger as sometimes this is impossible (someone says something that ticks you off) but more about creating a strategy to deal with the trigger and not let it control you. c. Sit on it In the circumstance, we currently find ourselves technology has overtaken the majority of our face to face interaction. Our communication is now done through video conferencing, email and text message. Maybe a little more for some than others. Given that we are in such an unprecedented time and with unusual circumstances, it would be fair to say comfort levels are low and emotion is high. Therefore the chances of an emotional outburst are exponentially increased. With this in mind, there may come reason and opportunity for you to put that emotional outburst into writing. Writing out how you feel is one thing, what you do with it another. Simple rule, write it out if you must, however under no circumstance, regardless of the reason for writing do not hit send! It is also important to understand that in times like these it can be quite beneficial and cathartic to write. Give yourself time (usually overnight) and space to regain emotional control, increase understanding, change perspective before you even contemplate hitting the old send button. But if for any reason you do hit send and then regret it, take responsibility for your actions, fess up and apologise, both to the recipient and yourself. Lesson learned, move on and don't repeat. And in doing so you help make sure... The Journey Continues!

09.01.2022 I wrote the following information years ago for our newsletter The Full Nelson I thought with these times of uncertainty it may be relevant to reprint it. I was going to go through and edit it for relevance but then decided that it isn't my place to choose for you what is relevant and what is not. Each and every day someone somewhere has to either deal with or decide not to worry about the pressures or stress in their life. Now, as we know, stress and pressure can be created...Continue reading

09.01.2022 The Olympic 100 metre final The Melbourne Cup The NBA playoffs... The Super Bowl The Presidential election The FA Cup Final Performing to a sold-out Wembley Stadium A Formula One Grand Prix race Oscars Night I think you get the picture of the level of competition we are talking about here. But for me, you or anyone else to have any chance of being successful at this level (or at any level for that matter), you have to believe you belong. You have to believe this is where you should be. You have to believe this level of competition or participation is not above you, it is you. It is not arrogance, but it is more than just confidence. So how do you get this sense of belonging? For some, the only way you get the belief that you belong is by being there and being successful at that level. Then you really do believe this is where you should be. Whereas for most of us, you just prepare each and every day knowing full well that there are other people out there doing what they can and where they can to make sure that they succeed and you don’t. You take that understanding to make sure you prepare in every way possible. Then you walk into the arena with the confidence from how you have prepared or how you have got to where you are, and you show the world that this is who you are and this is where you belong. The look associated with belonging, to a certain degree, can be faked. But the true measure of when you are where you belong is when you feel it and believe it. The Journey Continues!

03.01.2022 In my latest blog post, I outlined a problem that I have been working through for a while. Here is a small excerpt... Capacity It is a word that has so many uses in our daily lives.... Capacity to endure Capacity to listen Capacity to understand Capacity to improve Capacity to delegate For me in the last 12 months or so, it has been all about my capacity to retain information that I have just read. It’s almost as if my brain is full and just continues to reject the input of information I was introducing. Therefore my reaction was simple, and what I believed at the time to be quite appropriate. Don’t read! Well, how's that working for ya, Tex? Not very well to be honest. So a change of approach was needed. But, a change that is not about justification and not about using confirmation bias to find a way around this. So it was about having an open mind to finding a better way forward. However, my reality was that there wasn’t a change in my approach. For some unknown, no sensible reason (often defined as insanity) I fell into the trap of If I continue the same old approach, maybe something will change. But it didn’t, and rightly so. The same old approach continued to bring the same ineffective result. Read. No capacity to retain the information. To find out what I did to a. Change b. Rectify the problem check out the blog post at... http://www.totalperformanceconcepts.com.au/a-personal-insi/

02.01.2022 How important is it for you to be right? I love this question, because if it is understood and taken on at a certain level and in a particular way, it really does cause oneself to check approach, ego, and psychology. I recently sat in on a conversation between two parties, each side making good points but admittedly not a whole lot of listening going on. Well, at least not positive listening but more the negative kind. The type of listening where you hear enough to refute, t...o take back control, to see where to interject. Yes, that type of listening. One party was more on the offence, the win at all cost type approach. The other, perhaps a little more balanced in their initial approach but you could see the frustration correspondingly grow as they realised that playing by the rules wasn’t really going to be the best approach to a successful conclusion. Approach, mood, and emotion began to escalate. It was at this time I dropped the question, aimed directly at both parties: ‘Do you want resolution or do you want to be right?’ Continue reading... http://www.totalperformanceconcepts.com.au/being-right/

01.01.2022 An excerpt from the November 1st edition of The Full Nelson newsletter: In the thirty-five years I have been coaching, I have each day seen first hand that success, true success is multidimensional. The highly successful of this world do not rely on one single area for their success, regardless of how good they are at it. They will not allow themselves to be exposed or to fail because they have taken a one-dimensional approach in the pursuit of their success. You should be no... different! Train for today and prepare for tomorrow. Don’t become dependent on natural talent, be that person that is hungrier and more determined than the next. Be that person that understands your strengths and weaknesses, work on the areas that are demanded of you now and the ones that will be required of you in the future. It won’t just happen. Success is a choice, and in this case, your choice. Subscribe at: https://coachbillnelson.click/newsletter
