25.01.2022 Our brain is a meaning making organ and a generator of predictions. This is how we understand the world and keep ourselves safe. This is how we decide how to behave. Our brains are not perfect and our interpretation is dependent on many variables, primarily our previous experience. This explains how we can reach different conclusions in our meaning and predicting. It’s not so much about true and false or right and wrong. More about what is dominant in our attention and aware...ness. Notice your dominant story and bring your curiosity to it. What else might also be true/ right / possible? We are ALL bias and most of our biases are unconscious. Mindfulness practice can help us raise our awareness and open up the possible truths in our world. #mindfulness #storytelling #wellbeing #humanconnection #unconsciousbias #healthcareleadership #leadership #coaching #Recalibrate

24.01.2022 Emotional Intelligence is sometimes called social intelligence. I imagine a world of healthcare where emotional intelligence is actively cultivated, where people value their own awareness highly and seek to tune it regularly. Where people are emotionally literate and understand when their body resonates with another human. Where they remember that every person they meet, in whatever role, is "just like me" in their intention to find happiness (peace or satisfaction if you... prefer those words) and to relieve their own suffering. Where all the individuals remember that they belong and are valued and as a result, the systems are whole person and shared-person-centric. What kind of healthcare system do you want to help shape?

24.01.2022 Values guide our behaviour. Knowing what we value gives us a sense of direction and a way to understand when we feel uncomfortable. They are implicit in the way we understand the world.... Be curious about your values. Raise your self awareness by asking yourself questions like What do I value in this? What is missing for me here? What value does this behaviour reveal? #values #wellbeing #acceptance #curiousity #mindfulness #healthcare #respond #recalibrate #coachingfordoctors

23.01.2022 This is one of the critical sentences in this article: "staff who believed they would be taken seriously were three times more likely to report bad behaviour." Every staff person needs the opportunity to build their skills AND the organisation needs to do this openly, systemically and candidly by saying and acting accordingly. That is: As you develop these skills we expect you to speak up and engage in helping us make changes to that end, we will listen and act. If they do no...t the whole thing is quickly seen as another way of making individuals responsible in an unworkable situation. Skills and processes. Staff regularly say things to me like: we don't need more rules or managers, we need the managers we have to manage. Skills, structures, systems that endorse and enable each other. Leaders who are more than good at their original job, recognition that leadership is it's own set of skills and they need to be actively cultivated. Staff will not use their new skills in speaking up if they do not believe they will be taken seriously when they do. Training hospital leaders in how to engage with colleagues to counter disruptive and unprofessional behaviour is critical, including being receptive when staff speak up, and having both the skills and processes for an effective response. #respond #recalibrate #coachingfordoctors

23.01.2022 We are all subject to unconscious bias. These biases direct our attention and confirm our bias. Our empathy and understanding then is not the same for everyone. Mindfulness can help us learn more about our bias and chose our response with more consciousness. ... #unconsciousbias #mindfulness #attention #empathy

23.01.2022 To make sure the healthcare system is taking better care of healthcare workers we also need individuals who have the skills to take care of themselves and each other. 19.01.2022 Try this practice: 1.Thank your mind for that thought. 2.Smile, your brain is very good at doing it’s job. Predicting, surveying, keeping you safe. 3.Pause... 4.Breathe - engage the other part of your mind, your body. 5. Be curious -what other possible thoughts are there? What else might be true? 6. Hold it all lightly, free your mind 7. Say ‘might be true, might not be true’ #freeyourmind #mindfulness #mentalhealth #respond #healthcare

18.01.2022 Be intentional and curious. What happens if you roll your shoulders? Were they hugging your ears? ... Can you straighten up a little bit? Are you clenching your jaw? 18.01.2022 Humility is not just an esoteric conceptual idea, it is a courageous practical reality. As always, wise words from Dr Eric Levi. Leaders with Humility, Heart and Hope for unpredictable times. At Potential Project we help leaders across industry, including healthcare, to cultivate effective leadership with the skills of mindfulness, selflessness and compassion.... At Coaching for Doctors our #Recalibrate program for doctors focuses on learning these skills too. Skills for wellbeing and effective, long term careers in medicine. In our workforce wellbeing program #RESPOND we help people working across the full spectrum of healthcare to learn the skills of emotional regulation, emotional intelligence, how to manage their mind (their thoughts), how to uncover their biases - skills that help them lead themselves effectively and connect more authentically with others. Skills that reduce the risk of burnout and overwhelming stress and help people feel their own agency in their life and their work. At Coaching for Doctors we take 'soft skills', 'people skills' and work-life integration VERY seriously. You can learn the skills you need, you are not at the mercy of the system. Take action, feel your own agency, use your energy to be of service to yourself so that you can then continue to serve others. Put your own oxygen mask on first. What will help you make some time and space for this important work? When will it be the right time? .... When will you prioritise your own heart, hope and health? Thank you for your effort and your energy. Einstein said: "Everything that can be counted does not necessarily count: Everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted" We cannot rely only on our cognition and our measurements, we need to balance these with what we can feel and what's hard to measure - emotion, our whole body, connection with others, humility, hope and heart. 07.01.2022 Well doctors achieve better healthcare outcomes. Investing in healthcare provider wellbeing across the board is actively creating a system that can truly CARE for people, so that they can be HEALTHY. If the providers are burning out, overwhelmed or under too much pressure they can not, and do not, provide optimum care of their patients, their families or each other. #healthcareleadership... #mentalhealthforhealthcareworkers See more

03.01.2022 Do you feel over stretched and overworked? Is your medical career turning out the way you imagined it would? Let me share a story about one of my doctor clients, Jane.... Jane was an enthusiastic student who worked hard, hopeful about how she would contribute and make a difference in the world. As she progressed and spent more time working in hospitals, talking with patients, the harsh realities of medicine started to sink in. She was tired, she didn't have time to really listen to patients, no-one seemed to support her, her colleagues seemed to barely be coping themselves and the consultants frightened her sometimes. All in all she wondered if she was really cut out to be a doctor. Jane worked hard despite her self doubt and eventually became a consultant. Her new responsibilities felt daunting and although she was competent and coped in the heat of a crisis she was stressed and missing her family as she always seemed to be at work or on call. When Jane reached out to me to be her coach we talked about what she would like her work to really look like, what her goals and dreams were and what skills she needed so that she could better manage the realities of her life and career in medicine. Jane started one-on-one coaching and then joined our Recalibrate program. Over the next few months she developed her skills and adjusted her focus. She reconnected with what was important to her and grew her clarity and confidence. Now Jane is a confident and successful teaching consultant who is enthusiastic about her work and her future as a doctor. She knows how to stay in balance and feels more joy about a sustainable career in medicine. 03.01.2022 Visions only seem impossible when they are new or a long way off. My vision is of a health care system that is focused on health rather than illness and takes care of everyone, including the providers. This vision of healthCARE has gained so much momentum across the world during this pandemic. Here's another "voice" advocating for better care - a great video. We all know there are big system changes required. AND.... we are all part of 'the system' so we ALL have a part to pl...ay in making those changes, every day. I am astounded how often I hear stories where NO-ONE has asked the doctor I am talking to if they are OK, even after they return from a break on stress leave or illness.... Did you ask anyone today how are you and then listen with intent to their answer?... can you make a HABIT of listening, looking people in the eye, sending that text, making that phone call? What would happen if you decided to give 1-5 minutes EVERY day to saying THANK YOU to a peer? That's it - an intentional decision to make sure you show gratitude to someone in your work space every day. Don't be shy or scared, don't minimise this action. The science shows that people who have an active practice of gratitude have more wellbeing. We know that a powerful way to help people who feel depressed or have lost their sense of meaning, feel better when they do something for some one else.... do something for someone else that is free, just because you can... there's every chance you'll both feel better for it. Habits are built by repeat behaviour, a little bit - often. And if you are not OK yourself, tell someone.... 02.01.2022 Sue Robins has worked in health for years in Canada. She has a daughter training to be a nurse and she is advocate for her son. She herself has had breast cancer and she is a beautiful writer - I commend her book Bird's Eye View to you for a multifaceted look at healthcare. Sue is a compassionate, articulate, previous healthcare worker, amazing woman!!! You can read a recent story from her here. This story is about going to hospital for tests and the many small interactions w...ith non-clinical staff that make up a 'healthcare expereince' . And, if you employ people to work in health or have colleagues who work in health who want to build the skills of compassion, learn how to manage your own mind, emotions and stress, communicate more effectively, prevent burnout, please tell them about our RESPOND community. Everyone is just trying to do their job, it's much harder to do our jobs well when we don't have the skills for the job and we don't realise the impact we are having. EVERY interaction matters in health - every interaction. If your employer is a healthcare organisation, you are in the business of relationships with people. You need a lot of skills. Sue's story demonstrates why the patients sometimes arrive as they do and how we can all play a role in healthCARE. The really great thing is, these skills will help you in every facet of your life. Do it for yourself. You will benefit and so will every other person you interact with. The skills of wellbeing and mental health are the same skills of human connection and care. #mentalhealth #compassion #humanconnection #healthcare #healthcareworkers #respond https://www.suerobins.com/post/death-by-a-thousand-cuts
