24.01.2022 What does development and progression look like to you and your athletes or students? Does it align or where are the gaps . If you want your students or athletes to become skilled, teach them the knowledge they need to be able to practice. Skill requires knowledge and the will to practice . Grit, passion for improvement with perseverance to follow through will find ideas, concepts and application never seen before ... . 21.01.2022 Today is R U OK?Day which is Australia's national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone to ask, Are you OK? and to remember every day of the year to support people who may be struggling with lifes ups and downs. This year in the build-up to #RUOKDay were encouraging everyone to Trust the Signs, Trust your Gut & Ask R U OK? What can we do as coaches, teachers or leaders to help our age grade athletes or adolescents get through lifes ups and downs?... See a previous blog post addressing some ideas to acknowledge the multiple transitions of life, education, work and sport occurring, developmentally these people and players shall be starting to reconstruct personal past, perceive the present and anticipate the future in an internalised and evolving self-story. https://www.coachingthecoaches.net//hturvgbfvu48wj8r6v2lx2
21.01.2022 Friends and followers; bit of a deep-dive into children or adolescent motivation...does competition help or hinder creative actions? I believe it's external influence from others which creates a standardisation in expectations as opposed to competition itself; a mastery focus even in the face of competition should allow students or athletes to test their current abilities, adapt and collaborate where necessary or possible shall encourage creative adaptations of skills or find new ways to overcome standardised issues. What's your thoughts?? https://www.coachingthecoaches.net//does-competition-quash
20.01.2022 Thanks to Dave Wright and all involved with Player Development Project for this invite to discuss all things coaching and reflect on my current research Love their website, content and all coaches involved and worth a look if you're interested in sports coaching ideas https://podcasts.apple.com//player-developme/id1245512568
19.01.2022 A focus on empathy and close, meaningful relationships between coaches, players and all stakeholders involved offers meaningful impact and actions by the players. Players drive their own development and reflect on personal and collective performance to allow the coach to offer closeness and desired commitment to their relationships through autonomy supportive practices. This article looks at how Klopp and Pochettinos focus on relationships, empathy and player-centred approaches led them to the final this year but has set behaviours which shall strengthen and develop their squads for years to come. https://www.coachingthecoaches.net//its-all-about-love-six
17.01.2022 Loved being invited by @CoachingLifeMag looking at the HOW, not WHAT of coaching, using ideas such as Listen first..then ask, dont talk & how to be adaptable and complementary as a coach https://www.coachinglife.com.au//the-how-not-what-of-coac/

15.01.2022 Friends and followers....While there is the high expectations and pressure to perform in atmospheres such as #RWC2019, developing a fun, inclusive but challenging environment bring the best out of players of all capabilities and levels. Ultimately, a coachs ability to acknowledge and develop positive interpersonal connections, driven by interpersonal skills and united sense of purpose and achievement, can offer solid base for positive relationships and performance atmospheres. However, I wanted to consider more into how have or how do the leading nations create a fun, progressive, inclusive environments where they embrace challenge and have desire to continue to grow, learn and apply at the biggest stage of their sport? 15.01.2022 What does a growth mindset look like in sports or learning environments? . In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard workbrains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. . Do we actually know or understand fully what these young athletes want or need to attain a growth mindset? Exactly what we want in return; p...assion, commitment, meaningful communications and relationships, support to choose and make decisions, following instinct while offering honest feedback on performance and support for a growth mindset; all things we must educate, support and train to others . . #coaching #coachinglife #coachingonline #CoachingTips #coachingbusiness #rugby #rugbygram #rugbyunion #selfdetermination #selfdeterminationtheory #mastery #masteryourcraft #masteryourmind #sdt #positivepsychology #goals #motivation #autonomy #intrinsicmotivation #growthmindset #wellbeing #personalgrowth #motivationquotes #psychology #motivation #mindset #creativity #instadaily #motivate #photooftheday See more
15.01.2022 How strong is your mindset? As a leader, what realistic expectations or attainable goals do you set your athlete or staff? . All these questions fit into both these lines...can you do it?? 14.01.2022 On the biggest stage of all, whom or how many take the leadership role: Can a coachs time be better spent identifying players to translate their vision, helping develop task leaders through adopting principles of law of diffusion of innovation? See my newest blog post considering all these aspects . Throughout my research, I have developed beliefs and philosophies surrounding the necessity to develop player and peer leaders within elite rugby settings to satisfy motivationa...l aspects of the players while ensuring they develop sense of meaningful connections and relatedness . 14.01.2022 Friends; throughout watching the excellent doco-series of The Last Dance, I always had the nagging question to myself of how critical Phil Jackson was and what steps did he take in creating the ideal atmospheres (or controlling Jordans high expectations of others) for the group as a whole to excel? The further we get into The Last Dance, the more we learn that Jackson was not only an Xs and Os coach, but he also had a high level of emotional intelligence, which put hi...m ahead of his time. From Jordan wanting to be the guy, or Pippen wanting to sit out, to Rodman wanting a 48-hour vacation, Jackson had a true understanding of the team and the individuals within it. Most coaches in this situation probably could not have handled all the twists and turns that Jackson faced. Have a read and let me know your thoughts.... https://www.coachingthecoaches.net//dont-put-a-saddle-on-a
12.01.2022 How important is empathy and emotional intelligence for coaches? . Research acknowledges empathy as important as it can build enduring relationships and defuse conflicts. A focus on empathy and close, meaningful relationships between coaches, players and all stakeholders involved offers meaningful impact and actions by the players. Players drive their own development and reflect on personal and collective performance to allow the coach to offer closeness and desired commitmen...t to their relationships through player-centred approaches and autonomy supportive practices . I believe a coachs ability to use contrast principle, offering clarity by adding context, honesty and reasoning when offering perspective for dynamic and interactive coaching scenarios experienced and athlete relations shall reap long term gains and reciprocal commitment and closeness from athlete in return . See my newest blog post discussing this area, looking at coaches involved in recent Champions Cup Final . . #coaching #coachinglife #coachingonline #CoachingTips #coachingbusiness #rugby #rugbygram #rugbyunion #selfdetermination #selfdeterminationtheory #mastery #masteryourcraft #masteryourmind #sdt #positivepsychology #goals #motivation #autonomy #intrinsicmotivation #growthmindset #wellbeing #personalgrowth #motivationquotes #psychology #motivation #mindset #creativity #instadaily #motivate #photooftheday See more

11.01.2022 Coaches; what does culture and team identity look like to you and who drives it within your team or organisation?? . Culture is often spoken about but its also misunderstood. Culture is built on leadership, honesty and humility. Culture is not a cheat sheet that a coach or business leader can photocopy and transfer .... Sports coaches often feel that empowering the players in their teams undermines their own leadership status. Research shows evidence for the opposite view; by creating and developing leaders in their teams, coaches are perceived as better leaders themselves . 10.01.2022 Coaches; coaching should be recognised as an educational dynamic relationship, where the coach can satisfy players goals and development but both sides have an investment of will capital, where human initiative and intentionality are both dedicated to show commitment towards goals and relationships. But with all the various needs of athletes and limitations of time, resources and abilities of coaches and their developers, could a formula be proposed for getting the coaching ballance right?? https://www.coachingthecoaches.net//chemistry-or-numeracy-
09.01.2022 Friends and followers; reviewing comments from recent interview with Matthew Wilkie, IRFUs head of coach development, I wanted to look at the importance of coach-athlete relationships and techniques for building meaningful, impactful relationships. 08.01.2022 Friends; as we prepare for the introduction of newest NBA players, let look at how these fresh-faced superstars stay grounded, focused and motivated as they shall prepare for their newest and biggest challenge of entering into the premier basketball competition and where do the role of coaches fit into these scenarios? https://www.coachingthecoaches.net//nba-draft-2019-what-is
08.01.2022 Great article from Working with Parents in Sport and good reminder to parents and coaches "The best coaching sessions look slightly chaotic; organised chaos is a better picture than a long line of children waiting behind a cone. Too much structure & the session will become tedious for your child. One of the biggest issues for children is boredom. The more talented in the group must be being challenged and not just repeating things that they can already so very easily. Likewise, if the bar is set too high for the weaker players then they will feel nothing but failure from their participation" https://www.parentsinsport.co.uk//parents-do-you-know-wha/
07.01.2022 Friends and followers....new piece of writing looking at comments made by Ireland Head Coach Farrell and other sources of information, asking us to reflect and question our coaching processes and methodologies, understanding what is REALLY important to your athletes or how to make an impact with your coaching group Quoting Andy Farrell, The team is a reflection of you as a coach. 06.01.2022 Encourage the development of a mastery focus which allows room for failure and learning and focuses on the process while an obsession with winning does not . Excellence is something that is lasting and dependable and largely within a persons control. In contrast, success is perishable and is often outside our control . The enemy of excellence in youth sports is the obsession with winning. It is driving children out of sports and toward sedentary lifestyles, and it is not pre...paring them to succeed in sport or in life. 06.01.2022 Curiosity offers a more interesting journey in the development pathway . 05.01.2022 Why do we as coaches or teachers seek perfect practice as opposed to learning and development through creating problems, allowing athletes to make decisions and ultimately discovery through mistakes along the way? . Within team, organised sports, I believe breaking the drill based, linear forms of coaching methodologies while allowing for and embracing collaborative exploration of talents and interests within sports or practice designs has become critical for coaches . We n...eed to move away from drills, and resist the urge to employ methods and production line processes of the Industrial Age because they are part of a development approach that attempts to mechanise the development of people as opposed to making the player at the centre of the decision making process and help players to adapt . Coaches also need to recognise the importance of relationships and environment building versus focus on tactical and technical aspects. Coaches at different development stages could act as mentors, supporting players to develop cognitive skills where the athletes are aware of and take responsibility of appropriate practices and thinking strategies so they can transfer to performance environments . #coaching #coachinglife #coachingonline #CoachingTips #coachingbusiness #rugby #rugbygram #rugbyunion #selfdetermination #selfdeterminationtheory #mastery #masteryourcraft #masteryourmind #sdt #positivepsychology #goals #motivation #autonomy #intrinsicmotivation #growthmindset #wellbeing #personalgrowth #motivationquotes #psychology #motivation #mindset #creativity #instadaily #motivate #photooftheday See more
05.01.2022 Coaches and teachers; what do we know about emotional intelligence and how important is it to you?? . 04.01.2022 Writing during the early stages of COVID-19 lockdown, I wanted to look at what we can do as coaches to help our development and athletes. In this unfamiliar territory of postponed competitions, sporting organisations on lock-down and priorities of community wide heath and welfare taking precedence over sporting involvement and athletic achievement, what can we do as coaches to continue to develop our craft and maintain our athletes interest and development? 03.01.2022 Coaches; New blog post looking how Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp has created a heated debate around EPL winter break, raising points around burnout and player welfare in athlete centred environments Looking at Klopps focus on empathy and close, meaningful relationships with his players and staff , his vocal importance towards player-centred approaches has allow him to develop a coaching environment which offers players ingredients for genuine motivation; mastery, autonom...y and purpose. His strong stance for his players and their welfare strengthens these ideas as he is looking to reduce the symptoms of player burnout and keep his elite playing group genuinely motivated and focused as they charge towards the pointy end of the season. But, what is burnout and can it really factor this much into player motivation.? https://www.coachingthecoaches.net//klopps-winter-break-cr

01.01.2022 Culture is often spoken about but its also misunderstood. Culture is built on leadership, honesty and humility. Strong cultures honor, respect & enable people by celebrating their gifts & talents by giving them clear roles & responsibilities; they hold people accountable for improving, having a positive impact & doing their jobs . Sports coaches often feel that empowering the players in their teams undermines their own leadership status. Research shows evidence for the oppo...site view; by creating and developing leaders in their teams, coaches are perceived as better leaders themselves. Coaches will be more effective leaders when their behaviours indicate that they are one of us, because they share our values, concerns and experiences, & are doing it for us, by looking to advance the interests of the group rather than own interests . Remarkable coaches create a culture where the athletes become the teachers; we should choose to get out of the way & let the players work with eachother for solving problems, creating accountability & guiding learning . . #coaching #coachinglife #coachingonline #CoachingTips #coachingbusiness #rugby #rugbygram #rugbyunion #selfdetermination #selfdeterminationtheory #mastery #masteryourcraft #masteryourmind #sdt #positivepsychology #goals #motivation #autonomy #intrinsicmotivation #growthmindset #wellbeing #personalgrowth #motivationquotes #psychology #motivation #mindset #creativity #instadaily #motivate #photooftheday See more
