08.01.2022 Fight or flight! These are the only reactions when we are put in a stressful situation - right? No ... Polyvagal Theory by Stephen Porges reveals there are three autonomic responses when animals (including humans!) come under stressful situations. The first is 'Social Engagement' eg: passengers look for an air steward if they feel there is a bad situation during a flight; the second and most commonly understood response is 'Fight or Flight' eg: when faced with a threat ...you either defend yourself by fighting or decide to save yourself by running away! But there is a third - 'Immobilisation' (or Freeze response) our reptilian ancestors do this ie; when under threat lizards and other animals play dead as a survival instinct. Whilst the intention of all these bodily responses have positive intent, issues arise when these responses to everyday stress become habitual. Think about your responses to everyday stress.
