22.01.2022 Dietary fibres are resistant to digestion in the small intestine. Meaning human enzymes cannot hydrolyse the chemical bonds of fibrous foods like we would for other macronutrients. So fibre ends up in the large intestine intact ready for fermentation. So why should we eat fibre? 1. Lowers serum cholesterol (binds to cholesterol and excretes it)... 2. Improves glycemic control (slows down sugar absorption) 3. Improves regulatory and stool elimination (bulk laxative) 4. Feeds your microbiome (good bacteria) 5. Produces Short chain fatty acids (anti-inflammatory, energy source, protects epithelial layer, regulates cell proliferation and apoptosis) 6. Increase health of intestines 7. Linked to reductions in many diseases such as Cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes mellitus, Metabolic syndrome, Cancer (breast, colorectal, endometrial, oesophageal, gastric, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate) How to get more fibre in your diet? -Include your veges in all your meals and eat them first -Eat whole foods (fruits, starchy vegetables, legumes, whole grains) - Snack on fruit, nuts and seeds - Choose whole grained foods over refined (e.g. whole meal bread/pasta) - Take a fibre supplement (psyllium husk, guar gum, beta-glucans etc). - Don’t just juice fruits, make sure to blend everything - Leave the skin on fruits and veges How much fibre should you be eating? Men: ~38 g/day Women: ~25 g/day I hope this helps people understand the important of getting fibre in your diet. If you don't go to the toilet once or twice a day, its probably because your don't have enough fibre in your diet. #fiber #protein #trainertip #foodismedicine #ketolove #lowerscholesterol #fiberart #healthy #nutrition #handmade #vegan #fitness #sculpture #weightloss #improveshealth #cleaneating #installation #artist #pink #healthyfood #yarn #doral #exhibition #food #painting #fibre #tip #plantbased #glutenfree

22.01.2022 Physical stress can be one of the worst stressors people face. A lot of us train because it makes us feel good. We get that feeling of a mild euphoria after the training session that keeps us coming back for more. However, pushing your body hard each day, week or month is very stressful. Very few people have the ability to recover from high frequency, intensity and volume. These people are the freaks of the world (and by freaks I mean in a good way). ... I like to use 4 weight training sessions a week with included deload methods, undulating periodisation or general rest as a means of allowing the body to recover. If you don't recover from your workouts then you're pushing shit up a hill. No recovery, No gains. Recovery has never been so important. For example - professional athletes that play sport weekly during a season don't train a whole lot during the week because they cant recover enough for the next up-coming match. Most of the week is built around recovery. Lets work smarter, not harder. #training #personaltrainer #trainer #nogains #recovery #frequency #intensity #volume #rest #relax #listentoyourbody #physical #professional #athlete #nopainnogain #worksmarter #worklifebalance #futureofwork #balancedlife #balancedlifestyle #libido #muscle #inflammation #failure #taxing #injury #overtraining #underrecovering

20.01.2022 What are the benefits of using ketones as a fuel source? 1. Turning off bad genes, turning on good genes 2. Increasing autophagy 3. Reducing inflammation ... 4. Increasing cellular energy 5. Protect and repair the mitochondrial membrane = increased fat adaptation 6. Creating less oxidation by improved metabolism of glucose and fat 7. Turn on SERT-1 gene = increase longevity This isn’t an exhaustive list of the benefits when using ketones as your fuel. These benefits also don’t require a long list of supplements to achieve. 17.01.2022 There is a lot of controversy around gluten nowadays. Many people are adopting gluten free diets (GFD) because it makes them feel better. Does this mean everyone should start a GFD? Firstly, gluten is a class of proteins that are found in different plants. We mainly talk about wheat, barley and rye when talking about gluten. And, since wheat is the most controversial, we’ll talk about gluten within wheat. Wheat contains Gliadin and Glutenin proteins which are responsible for... making dough elastic (think glue) and/or used as a thickener. Which is why it's found in breads, pasta, baked goods, beer and some processed foods. Most proteins are broken down by enzymes in different parts of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract which form amino acids, di-, tri- & oligopeptides. These protein molecules are absorbed through the epithelial cells of the small intestines and used for many different purposes. Gluten proteins contain high amounts of proline and glutamine which make them more resistant to breakdown, so many of them aren't broken down into smaller molecules. However, gluten can still be transported across the epithelium through paracellular transport (between cells) and transcellular (through cells via transferrin receptors). Here is where it gets interesting. How does paracellular transport occur? When gliadin from wheat interacts with the CXCR3 receptors on cells within the GI tract, cells produce and release a protein called zonulin. Zonulin reacts with the GI cells, causing gut tight junctions to grow wider. This is one reasons that many people now have a 'leaky gut’. Leaky gut’s let in anything and everything that can fit through the gaps of the epithelial cells such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, undigested food etc. People with Celiac disease cop it even more because it causes the immune system to attack the epithelial cells. I will be posting about celiac disease in the coming days. What does this mean? Can I still eat bread and pasta? Yes of course. However, remember it will be causing inflammation by increasing immune system responses. The more you eat, the more damage you induce. On a personal level, when I’m not doing specific dietary modifications, I eat gluten products without any guilt. However, I make sure that I’m not eating it all the time. I usually eat wheat once or twice during the week. I can do this because I know if I do everything else right, my gut will repair. Gut supplements to help heal you gut lining; L-glutamine Zinc-l-carnosine Curcumin Collagen peptides Fibre (butyrate) Probiotics

17.01.2022 You spend approx 8-12 hours a day doing a job for someone else so you can get paid to live, eat and entertain yourself. What is your occupation like? Do you love it? Does it provide you with what you need and want? ... Do you enjoy being there? Are they looking after me? Do the people treat your right? Are you coping with the workload? Is it worth the money? Is this impacting my health? These are just a few of the questions you need to ask yourself about your occupation. Many people suffer severely from their occupation because of harassment, workload, work type etc. Have a think about some of those questions and make sure the benefits outweigh the risks #healthyfood #healthy #women #bodytransformation #body #fitgirls #bikini #diet #selfconfidenceiskey #fittips #selflovematters #benicetoyourself #diettips #mentalhealthsupport #weightlossjourney #weightlossprogress #weightlosstips#weightloss #fitnessmotivation #success #focus #dedication #progress #determination #winning #workforit #bodyconfidence See more

16.01.2022 Mono-dieting is a great way to start your first nutrition plan if you're inexperienced. However, I like people to take control of their own diet by educating them on macronutrients, nutrient density of foods, micronutrient profiles of food. This leads to long term weight management and healthy habits for the individual. Please note, this doesn't mean eating junk foods, drinking alcohol, eating pizza every night to make up your calories as this would effect your health. It'...s just an advantage to be able to enjoy these treats every so often. The best approach is to follow a whole food diet and only allowing minimal processed foods into the diet. This all just comes down to education to your client which i'm a huge fan. 16.01.2022 DOPAMINE HACK BELOW This wasn't a classic '12 week transformation' that everyone gets all excited about on instagram. People need to understand that a 12 week transformation require serious life restriction and a LOT of extra time on their hands (which most us don't have). For most of us, like Joel here. It took about 8 months to lose 12kg. Joel had to overcome some of the harshest work commitments I have ever seen. Each month he took on extra responsibility that would... drive most people mad. However, by training Joel through the week at sustainable level gave him the workout he needed to let go. Keeping in mind not to go balls to the wall as he couldn't afford to be brain dead. To keep Joels brain functioning at a high level, it was important to be smart about his nutrition. Using food medicinally fed Joel's brain and kept him energised which allowed him to fulfil all his daily tasks. One example of this was eating Red meat in the mornings. Red meat has a high amount of the amino acid Tyrosine. Tyrosine is a precursor to the famous Dopamine. Dopamine is super important to have at optimal levels for brain function. Now, add your morning cup of coffee. Dopamine signalling in the brain is dramatically increased when you drink coffee due to the caffeine. Takeaway here: add red meat and a coffee together (coffee 1 hour away from this meal) and you have super charged your dopamine levels. PS - on the weekends Joel drank wine and ate pizza. This is a part of being able to wind down and let go for another big week ahead. Gyms are opening back up on the 8th of November. We're super excited @bodyseek to be opening the doors for anyone who wants to come in and make a change. Work with me if you want to live a balanced lifestyle and still get the results. 14.01.2022 BERRIES = MORE LIFE Eat berry has its own distinctive make-up of nutrients and phytochemical's. However, in general they all have some similar bioactive compounds that have HUGE health benefits. VITAMINS... Berries contain LARGE amounts of Vitamins A, C, E and B complex vitamins. These boost immune system and reduce inflammation. Also considered as antioxidants as they fight off oxidative stress (Hakala et al., 2003) MINERALS Rich in both macro- and micronutrients. Phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, sodium and aluminium. Essential bone and teeth development, provide strength to muscles, electrolyte balance, hormone functions (Hardisson et al., 2007) INSULIN REPSONSE Reduces digestion and absorption of starch which suppresses postpgrandial glycaemia (Torronen et al., 2013) MENTAL HEALTH Nilsson et al. (2017) found that a eating a mixture of berries every day increased memory in adults. ANTHOCYANINS - wtf are these? Anthocyanins are the reason berries are red, blue and purpled pigmented. They are a subgroup of flavonoids that are powerful antioxidants, have a beneficial effect on blood vessels, prevents shortening of outer segments in photoreceptor cells (eye health), improve memory, lower risk of cancer (Lopes da-Silva et al., 2007) CATECHINS, ELLAGIC ACID AND GALLIC ACID These nutrients found in berries have reported to have have properties that contribute to cancer preventions, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, chemoprotective, antioxidant, and have cytotoxic activity in vitro against cancer cell lines (Nile & Park, 2014). 13.01.2022 To become fat adapted, we need to eat a certain way so that we can get into a state called Ketosis. Eating a high fat diet, moderate protein and low carb can induce this effect over a period of time. Ketosis is a metabolic state that is characterised by increased levels of ketone bodies.... These ketone bodies are produced during the metabolism of our very own fat. Ketosis is an in-built survival mechanism when food or carbohydrates run low. This survival mechanism turns the body into a fat burning machine as it improves its ability to metabolise fat quickly. This increase in ketones allows organs such as your brain to survive. Our cells can use fat to metabolise energy but our brain can’t. This is because free fatty acids cannot cross the blood brain barrier. Instead, our brain uses ketones in the blood that is made from the breakdown of fat when it can’t find glucose. Want to learn more? I will be posting more about ketosis, FAQ's and how to's on this subject. #fatadapted #ketosis #ketones #survival #fatburning #brainlovesketones #cell #beneficial #fuelsource #autophagy #inflammation #cellularenergy #fatadaptation #mitochondria #oxidation #longevity #health #metabolism #weightloss #nosupplements #burnbabyburn #ketogenic #keto #ketodiet #ketosis #lean #leanbody #repair #protect See more

12.01.2022 We get told to eat more fibre by everyone. You see it on commercials and its on the packaging of many products in the supermarket "Extra fibre" or "Loads of fibre". What does this mean? And is fibre important? Firstly, fibre cannot be broken down by humans (mammalian).... Secondly, there are a few classifications of fibre; Dietary fibre: sounds like it is, naturally found in food & Functional fibre: fibre that has been extracted from other whole food sources and added into processed foods (these are the ones we mostly see on the commercials and packaging). Soluble fibre: Being soluble, it can blend in with water and form a gel-like substance. Soluble fibre helps with blood sugar management (extremely important for diabetics), lowering cholesterol (extremely important for people with high LDL and low HDL), removal of toxins (helps clear toxins from the liver and excretes them - disease prevention), fermentation (feeds the gut bacteria), following this it synthesises important molecules (B vitamins, vitamin K, butyrate, etc). Insoluble fibre: Being insoluble, it doesn't blend with water. Instead, it stays intact the whole way through the gut. Its role is increase the bulking of our stools, this helps to move everything along so other food doesn't get stuck along the way. Insoluble fibre also helps with people who are constipated. However, be sure to not have to much as it can cause constipation. So fibre is important in the diet. It has many functions that help your body thrive and reduce the risk of many diseases. Getting fibre from whole food sources is always the best option rather than getting it from processed. As a general rule, stay clear of processed foods. They usually have added ingredients and are nutrient deficient from heating, storing and preservation methods. #fibre #organic #fiber #pectin #lignin #oligosaccharides #inulin #resistantstarch #hemicellulose #cellulose #plantbased #fiberisfuel #glutenfree #tea #nourish #diseaseprevention #eatfibre #eatclean #nutrition #breakfast #cleaneating #nutritionhelp #nutritionguide #eatleaves #eatvegetables #eatfruit #feedyourbacteria #bvitamins #vitamink #butyrate See more

12.01.2022 Ketosis ranges from 0.5 mg/dL and upward of 3.5 mg/dL. It can sometimes rise up to 8.0 mg/dL after prolonged fasting in some individuals. Everyone gets different numbers depending on a few factors; - Length of time in ketosis - Metabolic activity - Stress levels... - Age - Food - Caffeine intake - Temperature - Regular fasting - Genetics To find these numbers you must use a blood ketone meter. They are relatively cheap and very easy to use. There are a few brands out there on the market. Some are better than others and they all range at different costs. I personally use one called LifeSmart that reads ketones and glucose levels. The cost of strips is something to look at as they are pricey for some brands. The LifeSmart ketone strips cost approx. $1 per strip. Glucose strips are much cheaper. Don’t use the urine ketone strips as the more you use your ketones the less you readings will be and could lead to disappointment. Other ways of determining how efficient you are at using ketones is by using a ketone breath tester. The higher the reading the more ketones you are metabolising. #keto #lowcarb #ketodiet #ketolifestyle #ketolife #weightloss #lchf #ketosis #ketogenic #ketomeals #ketorecipes #ketoweightloss #ketofood #weightlossjourney #ketogenicdiet #fitness #healthyfood #ketofriendly #healthylifestyle #ketotransformation #paleo #healthy #ketoaf #glutenfree #intermittentfasting #ketocommunity #ketofam #diet #lowcarbdiet #bhfyp

I know this is cliche but, how would you go against a tiger if you didn't have an acute stress response? The big issue is that we smash ourselves with these acute stressors day in, day out. 06.01.2022 The majority of us are what I call ‘sugar burners’. This means that the mitochondria in our cells use glucose as the primary source of energy (adenosine triphosphate ATP) majority of the time. Glucose comes from carbohydrate food sources as you would be aware. We also have stored glycogen (lots of glucose molecules packed tightly together) in the liver and skeletal muscle tissues. When glucose storage (glycogen) runs low in our bodies, we have the ability to create it fr...om other non-carbohydrate sources such as amino acids, lactate or glycerol. Glucose produces ATP energy at a fast rate, which is great for when you’re in stressful situations that require immediate energy - think fight or flight. However, If you’re regularly eating (snacking) high carbohydrate foods throughout the day then your body makes the assumption that you will use glucose all the time as your energy source because it keeps getting dumped into your blood. This means when your glucose runs low, your body signals you to eat food to get more glucose for organs like the brain to continue functioning. This type of lifestyle causes spikes and reductions in your blood sugar that results in hypoglycaemia leading to many unwanted symptoms you can look up yourself. Wouldn’t you rather have long lasting energy, reduce your snacking and pull energy from somewhere else? Maybe some of that fat around your belly that you hate? If you are one of these people that snack all the time, it might be a good time to make a change. 06.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THESE BENEFITS FROM VITAMIN B3 (NIACIN) NIACIN LOWERS LDL AND INCREASES HDL Niacin has been used as a treatment to lower cholesterol. It does this by increasing the degradation of Apolipoprotein B (VLDL and LDL deemed bad cholesterol) by inhibiting triglyceride synthesis. Niacin increases Apolipoprotein A (HDL good cholesterol) and increases PPAR expression which increases the expression of lipoprotein lipase (Gille et al. 2008)... NIACIN INCREASES FASTING GLYCEMIA Decreased levels of Niacin result in impaired fasting glycemia which can elevate blood glucose during periods of fasting. It’s believed that niacin stimulates GPR109a which is a G protein couple receptor resulting in increased glucose uptake (Meyer-Ficca et al. 2016) NIACIN IS RELATED TO AGING! Reduced intracellular NAD (Niacin) concentrations reduces the cells power and ability to undergo cell division and growth. This leads to cell aging and death (Imai & Guarente 2014). SUPPLEMENTATION Niacin supplement should be taken precautiously as it can cause a host of side effects like flushing, GIT disruption and dyslipidaemia. Be sure to check with your GP or have it monitored by a functional practitioner. #vitaminb3 #niacin #vitaminhelp #personaltrainermelbourne #melbournefitness #fitnessmelbourne #ptmelbourne #healthfitness #weightlossdiet #melbournepersonaltrainer #melbournept #coachingtips #buildmuscles #melbournenutritionist #lifestylechanges #weightlossgoal #ptlife #exercisephysiology #exerciseismedicine #trainingtips #trainingplan #nutritionmatters #trainingcamp #ptlife #nutritionmatters #trainingcamp #balancedlifestyle #balancedlife #exercisescience #supplementsmarter

05.01.2022 Low density lipoprotein (LDL) is commonly known as our ‘bad cholesterol’. It is deemed this because it can cause a build up of plaque in blood vessels which increases our chances of getting Cardiovascular Disease. LDL’s function is to transport a mixture of cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids to cells for storage or cell components. Too much LDL in comparison with HDL the ‘good cholesterol' can end up with plaque build up and cause blockages of the blood vessel...s. How can you reduce LDL cholesterol without medication? - Reduce saturated fat and trans fats - Increase omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil) - Reduce weight and excessive sugar - Quit smoking and alcohol - Exercise regularly The mechanism of how LDL cholesterol blocks blood vessels; When endothelial cells that line arteries are damaged by too many circulating LDL’s and other toxins they become worn down. LDL’s then find themselves getting comfy in the place of these worn out cells. Monocytes attend to the area which are then activated into Macrophages. These macrophages engulf the LDL’s to remove them from the vessels. However, if LDL’s remain high it becomes very hard to remove. Macrophages end up dying and solidifying there. An accumulation of macrophages and LDL that continue to build up in the vessel. Eventually, the endothelial cells sense something is wrong, they migrate to the built up area and release calcium to calcify the LDL and solidified macrophages. This creates a fibrous cap over the plaque to prevent blood clotting. If too much of this happens then vessels become blocked and you can die. This is why LDL cholesterol is called the "Bad Cholesterol" #cholesterol #diabetes #health #healthy #healthylifestyle #nutrition #bloodpressure #heartdisease #weightloss #hypertension #hearthealth #wellness #over #type #fitness #diet #kolesterol #healthyliving #detox #healthyfood #heart #obesity #jusdrinks #stroke #bloodsugar #highbloodpressure #heartattack #hormones #inflammation #bhfyp @bodyseek See more

02.01.2022 Relationship stress can be one of the toughest stressors we have to manage. Allowing issues between your friend, partner or colleague to build-up can have a significant impact to your mental well-being and biological health. Getting on the front foot and dealing with the issue ASAP is the best way to avoid building up negative energy in your body.... Becoming self aware of your actions on all your encounters with people is going to be priceless. You can do this by becoming more mindful in your approach with every single word you let go. One technique I have adopted of becoming more self aware is to include a daily reflection at the end of the day. This means when i'm sitting in bed, I go over the conversations I had with all the people I spoke to. I simply think of what I could have done better in that situation. The next time I see that person I will remember to not say something that may aggravate that person or say something to empower that person. That is my goal. I recommend doing your reflection by journalling. Writing something down is much more powerful than saying it in your head. #love #relationshipgoals #marriage #life #selflove #stress #dontholditin #bekind #selflove #gethelp #spiritual #divination #energy #selfhelp #support #betteryourself #tips #relationship #relationships #writeitdown #negativeenergy #bepolite #dontargue #dontyell #community #inspiration

02.01.2022 Becoming fat adapted (or entering ketosis) shouldn't be a complicated process. Firstly, you simply begin by limiting your carbohydrate consumption to less than 50 grams per day (some people with metabolic issues may need to lower to 30 grams/day). This is the most important part as we need to reduce sugar intake so that our body has a chance to use our body fat stores as fuel. If you eat too many carbohydrates your cells will continue using the glycolysis (glucose converted ...into energy) pathway. When reducing carbohydrate intake this doesn’t mean you stop eating carbs from vegetable sources, we still need phytonutrients and micronutrients from vegetable sources. This is extremely important and may mean you eat more vegetables than you usually do. Cut back on grains that are high carbohydrate sources that drive inflammation. Other foods to avoid in high volumes; - Potato - Sweet Potato - Pumpkin - Quinoa - Wheat - Rice - Fruit - Oats - Some legumes (kidney beans, chickpeas) Foods to include; - Oils (olive, MCT, coconut, avocado, macadamia etc) - Raw hard cheeses - Butter - Eggs - Nuts - Berries (low GI) - Grass-fed meats - Poultry - Fish - Organ meats - Psyllium Husk - Cured meats (organic only) - Smoothies - Vegetables #adaption #fat #mitochondria #healthyeating #oils #butter #keto #nuts #fish #smoothie #lowcarb #paleo #lchf #ketogenic #glutenfree #ketodiet #ketosis #weightloss #ketogenicdiet #fitfam #fitness #lowcarbhighfat #healthy #diet #sugarfree #primal #ketolife #ketofam

01.01.2022 How ketones have saved the lives of millions of people Protein is a precious macronutrient, it has so many crucial roles in the body. If we had no food available and our protein were to waste away to low levels, then death would soon be on the horizon. This is why we have a built-in survival mechanism to spare our precious protein. We breakdown body fat stores into ketones to make energy for the brain and body. Traditionally, many cultures have used ketosis as an adaptive st...ate to survive on ketones when food was scarce or when the only food that was available was extremely low in energy (grasses and leaves). This allowed people to sustain their brains and preserve muscle and other vital organs. Many people don’t understand how you could go for more than 24 hours without food, this is probably because they are inefficient fat burners and snack every 2 hours. However, its possible to go for a very long time without food if you have sufficient energy stores within your body. Even a lean person has a lot of fat surrounding their organs that will be used for energy as a means of keeping you alive. Eating a ketogenic diet is a great way to upgrade your body with some amazing benefits like many of our ancestors did. A few of the benefits include turning off bad genes and turning on good genes, increasing autophagy, reducing inflammation, protecting and repairing the mitochondrial membrane, increasing longevity, weight loss and balancing blood sugar levels. Wouldn’t it be worth-while winding back the clock for a month or two in ketosis? I think the benefits are well worth it. #lowcarb #lchf #keto #ketosis #ketodiet #ketogenic #ketogenicdiet #fitfam #weightloss #ketolifestyle #fit #lowcarbhighfat #ketofood #fitness #ketofam #nutrition #paleo #healthy #ketogeniclifestyle #glutenfree #ketolife #health #fat #fatburner #healthyfood #lowcarbdiet #ketosislifestyle #diet
