05.01.2022 Why do I prefer to play games at training rather than use drills to isolate technique? Training in isolation is all fine and well for correcting basic technical issues(mechanics of passing, first touch, etc), but when it comes to applying the correct technique in the correct situation, nothing can prepare a player better than playing an actual game. Research from the International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching shows that isolated training will provide a higher volume... of skill executions(i.e. more touches), however, game-based training has been associated with greater cognitive effort an important condition for skill learning and it’s understanding of when to use the technique. 1v1 training games allow repetition of attacking and defending and depending on your focus, you can manipulate the area to provide a different aspect to highlight, moving the goals to different areas, change the starting positions of the players to manipulate where the pressure is applied, etc, etc. Correcting technique in 1v1 is still achievable, but it has added the opportunity for the players to make decisions based on what action the opposing player has chosen. We can add even more decision making by increasing the numbers of players on the pitch. 2v2/3v3/4v4 training games create more problems with players with multiple opponents, but this brings the advantage of more problems to overcome, more decisions that need to be made and the addition of team mates to help solve the problems that the opposition brings. I would tend to have less focus on isolated technique correction and let the players find their own way out of the problem here as to intervene too often takes away from the engagement of the players. I’ve found that the advantages of playing games in training for the junior players, is an increase in player engagement, the competition makes for more effort and they get more touches with a decision to made around the correct technique in the correct situation.

02.01.2022 Training in games is the best way to improve decision making in football. Join us at The Football Street to enjoy your training and get better at football.
