23.01.2022 Some great tips and insights here from the perspective of autistic kids and how they may feel (or what they may need) after school.

20.01.2022 Hi everyone! I’m an Occupational Therapist (OT) and Mum of three children with disabilities, and I'm excited to introduce my new business Coactive Occupational Therapy! I provide OT services via Telehealth to Carer’s/Parents of Self-Managed and Plan-Managed NDIS Participants, throughout Australia. In my experience, being a Carer and navigating the NDIS can be frustrating, confusing, exhausting and even lonely, at times. ... So, I now offer Parents and Carer’s a unique OT service that provides practical assistance and support in navigating the NDIS whilst working towards the Participant’s NDIS goals and aspirations. If you think I can help you in any way, I would love to hear from you! See the image below for more information and my contact details.

15.01.2022 Interoception...have you heard of it? Probably not, and that's ok! Most people know we have 5 senses - sight, touch, smell, taste and hearing. But did you know we actually have EIGHT senses?! The other 3 senses are Vestibular (balance), Proprioception (knowing what position your body is in), and Interoception (our 'internal' sense).... Why is Interoceptive Awareness incredibly important, especially for Autistic people to learn to regulate their emotions? When I first stumbled across the concept of Interoception, I felt like I'd discovered a missing link, and the difficulties both my autistic kids and clients were experiencing suddenly made much more sense. 13.01.2022 Being a Parent or Carer in the NDIS space can be a roller coaster ride with many highs and lows as you navigate the system. Just getting accepted into the NDIS scheme may have been a monumental effort . However the steep learning curve continues - how find Service Providers, what to spend the funding on, how to use the portal, where to go when you have questions, or what to do when the Plan doesn't meet your needs? It is a lot to take on, but with the right support yo...u can work it out! Maybe you are further down the track and have had your services running smoothly ...then something changed? Maybe your favourite therapist or support worker is no longer available? Or the needs of your loved one has changed? Or you have a Plan Review coming up and don't know where to start? ....or just Covid 19! 2020 has a lot to answer for! While you are navigating all this within your NDIS world, maybe you have a lot of other things going on. You are trying to hold down your job or may have lost your job. You have financial concerns or are struggling to run a household . Or maybe you have concerns about other people you care for , or are trying to be 'all things to all people'? Maybe you are beginning to experience Carer Burnout? I hope not. But if the balancing act is getting too much, read on... So where do YOU receive support from? Who is your SUPPORT TEAM? How do you get your OWN needs met? These are tough questions. There are no quick and easy answers and everyone's situation is different. However, the first step may be to ask someone for help who understands what you are going through and knows how the NDIS system works. Some of your options may include: Your NDIS Local Area Coordinator or Support Coordinator if you have one. You will find their details on your NDIS Plan. Carer's Gateway - they provide counselling sessions for Carer's and can discuss other services that may help you. https://www.carergateway.gov.au/ There are several NDIS Facebook pages that offer support to Carer's and Parents of NDIS Participants - if you can find your 'tribe' (a group where you feel very comfortable), the support can be invaluable! Maybe you are having difficulty getting specific funding from NDIS and need the assistance of a Disability Advocate? https://www.ndiscommission.gov.au/parti/disability-advocacy Most importantly, if you are feeling extremely vulnerable right now and need urgent support, please call 000 or contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 https://www.lifeline.org.au/ However, if tailored practical assistance from Coactive Occupational Therapy - Jodi Rolph sounds like just what you need at the moment to ease the pressure, I would love to hear from you! 09.01.2022 Some more great insights from the I CAN Network about what may help an autistic student. One slide in particular resonated with me today. I'm always learning about autism, and for my own kids, I'm realising it can be helpful to observe behaviours such as Anger, Resistance or Avoidance as coming from Anxiety. Then through genuine curiosity and compassion, while it can be challenging, it is possible to identify the potential sources of anxiety. Naturally this can help identify ...solutions to try together. Although success is not guaranteed!! If I view Resistance as Naughtiness, my reaction will likely be to scold, make stern demands, criticise etc. Often this leads to an escalation in the behaviours I'm seeing. For the autistic person, this means increased anxiety and a greater risk of a full meltdown or shutdown...Not fun for anybody. Food for thought?
