17.01.2022 #treasuresfromthecoalcreekcollection Chandler Shave Plough Horse Drawn C. 1926 In the early years of colonisation of South Gippsland, deforested land needed to be cleared by stoving or burning out the underground stumps and roots of felled trees. This made way for the ploughing of the land. Early ploughs (background) were horse drawn and hand driven. The Shave' Hillside Reversible Disc Plough was invented by Mr. G F Shave farmer of Lyndhurst Gippsland (Victoria) and manufac...tured by D. and W. Chandler, Ltd., Westgarth Street, Fitzroy, Victoria. It cultivated large tracts of Gippsland that were previously too rough to plough. It is held in Building No. #24, the Machinery Shed at the Coal Creek Community Park and Museum. 04.01.2022 #Coalcreekeco Dracunculus vulgaris family Araceae dragonwort. This rare lily only blooms about once a decade. Last time it was seen in flower was 2006 around Halloween! Commonly known as the dragon lily, dragon arum, the black arum, the voodoo lily, the snake lily, the stink lily, the black dragon, the black lily, dragonwort, and ragons. The species is characterized by a large purple spathe and spadix, which has a very unpleasant smell reminiscent of rotting meat to attract flies (Lucilia and others) as pollinators. #southgippsland #korumburra #discoversouthgippsland #gippsland #exploresouthgippsland #victoria #australia #australiagram_vic #visitsouthgippsland #coalcreek #visitgippsland #visitkorumburra #visitvictoria #regionalvictoria #ecoheritage #wildlife #rareplants #gardening #rareflowers #rareplants

01.01.2022 With 2021 upon us and in celebration of his upcoming novel ‘The Elephant House’, let’s rewind to 2018 Coal Creek Literary Festival and the winning writer of the Bert van Bedaf Memorial Short Story, Scot Gardner. A South Gippsland local Scot has been writing for young people since last century - his books are mostly about misfits making peace with the world, death and love. ‘The Elephant House’ focuses on a young 16-year old Ewan Stoker. Every room in Ewan’s apartment contains... an elephant and these secrets are destroying his family. Ewan sees them. He may well be trampled to death as he herds them into the light Shortlisted for CBCA Book of the Year, Older Readers, 2019, Scot’s most recently published novel ‘Changing Gear’ is a must for any young adult. Merrick Hilton's done a runner. His folks think he's studying, but the real world has been calling for years and he can't ignore it any longer. A postie bike, a bedroll and a big sky - that's all he needs. But there's no telling how he'll handle roadkill, stolen oranges and unexpected romance, let alone the rough stuff. And in the real world nothing goes entirely as planned. Thankfully Victor - the old bloke Merrick meets on the road - knows a thing or two about broken bike chains. And broken hearts. As we cannot say it better ourselves, let us leave you with Dani Solomon’s review - 'Scot Gardner’s descriptions of the Australian landscape, as expressed by Merrick, feel so real that at times you hardly dare to breathe, so overwhelming is the absurd beauty of it. It makes you want to laugh and cry and lie down in the dirt to become a part of it.’ ‘Changing Gear’ is his eighteenth novel in as many years and his backlist includes award winning and internationally acclaimed books such as ‘Burning Eddy’, ‘The Dead I Know’ and ‘Sparrow’. #authorinfocus #scotgardner #changinggears #theelephanthouse #burningeddy #thedeadiknow #sparrow #coalcreekliteraryfestival #coalcreekpastauthors #authorsatcoalcreek #literaryfestival #coalcreek #writerstalk #australianfiction #australianauthor #victorianauthor #maleauthor #authorinfocus #youngadultfiction #youngadult
