20.01.2022 Hey Rhonda what does safe and stable mean? That the risk of future geotechnical failures and pollution from the mines is minimised as far as reasonably possible.

14.01.2022 Feature artist of the week is the incredible Esther Lloyd. If we did it Esther was there documenting it turning it into super cool videos. Esther is currently completing a Masters in Science Communication at ANU and has studied environmental management, human physiology, sociology, philosophy and Australian Indigenous issues among other things. She is communications officer for the Latrobe Valley Community Power Hub Project and engagement officer for the Communities Leading Change Project. Also is a fan enjoys studying unicorns in their natural habitat.

14.01.2022 Imagine a lush, water-logged subtropical rainforest of tree ferns, with temperatures five degrees higher and much greater and more frequent rainfall than we exp...erience today. This was the Latrobe Valley more than 20 million years ago, a wetland environment enveloped by a warm marine and humid climate that allowed generations of trees and plants to grow and die in peat mega-swamps at roughly the same rate as the floor of the valley dropping, providing the perfect recipe for brown coal, which needs heat and pressure to form. It was during this time from the early Eocene to the start of the Miocene in the Cenozoic period that Australia was still connected to Antarctica as the last link to the supercontinent Gondwana. But when Antarctica and Australia eventually fully separated along the newly formed Victorian coastline about five million years ago, cold ocean currents circulated and the climate cooled rapidly. It was this climatic cooling that ceased further deposits of plant materials below water - although by then, the mega swamps had already formed some of the thickest brown coal seam deposits in the world. Eventually, Eucalyptus forests began to appear, indicative of a dryer climate. By three million years ago, the landscape was covered by the vegetation we see today with lots of eucalypts and very few rainforest species existing. 13.01.2022 So what does it mean to be the art director of Coal Hole....think of super random ways to learn about mine rehabilitation with a bunch of rad artists. That empowers us with understanding and hope not fear and confusion. BIG Love to Gippslandia for providing some space for my thoughts on this process and probably our most random day eva. https://gippslandia.com.au/the-art-of-rehabilitation/

12.01.2022 HAZELWOOD DEMOLITION UNSUCCESSFUL The demolition of the Hazelwood power station’s first boiler house has ended in a misfire. The demolition was attempted at abo...ut 12:30pm, but resulted in a misfire. The charges destroyed about half of the boiler house, which contained two of the plant’s eight generating units. Half of the structure remains standing. Engie says an investigation will be conducted into what went wrong, but said no one was hurt in the explosion. The Department of Transport says traffic on the Princes Freeway near the mine will be slowed to 80km/h in both directions "until early next week" after the failed demolition.

12.01.2022 We are kicking off the week with our Hey Rhonda mini series. Inspired by how many times we said hey Rhonda over the last year getting our head around all the technicalities of mine rehabilitation. Enjoy

07.01.2022 The Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) is hosting a webinar exploring the results of a research project on public participation in mine closure - a study which looked at the Latrobe Valleys approach to mine rehabilitation planning, among other case studies in Australia and around the world. The Participatory Processes, Mine Closure and Social Transitions project profiled 10 participatory approaches including the use of community reference groups, visioning, and planning ...for closure, and provided examples and links on how these have been applied in closure situations. The study is one of the first six reports published by the SMIs Social Aspects of Mine Closure Research Consortium, a 10-year industry-university collaboration researching issues such as indigenous employment opportunities, governance and regulation, and mining as a temporary land use. Register for the webinar which will be presented by researcher Sarah Mackenzie on Tuesday 4 August from 9am AEST: bit.ly/3gmaeqA

06.01.2022 Coal Power? UNDO UNDO. Pretty cool to watch this come down in the flesh today with The View From Here. As iconic of an eyesore as it was, there was an odd sense... of loss seeing such a notable part of our regions skyline dismantle into a cloud of lawyer-arming dust, engulfing the neighbouring town. Heres new hope for a future of cleaner, renewable energy.

05.01.2022 Hey Rhonda what do the mines legally have to achieve? Under the Victorian Mineral Resources Sustainable Development Act, they have to achieve a landform that is safe, stable and sustainable.

04.01.2022 The UK pavilion at Expo 2010, known as the Seed Cathedral, was a sculpture structure built by a nine-member British business and government resources directed b...y designer Thomas Heatherwick. It referenced the race to save seeds from round the world in banks, and housed 250,000 plant seeds at the end of 60,000 acrylic rods projecting from the walls of the building. Repost - love the building. See more

02.01.2022 This weeks feature artist is the mega crafter Matilda from The Bee & The Spider. Matilda is a corner stone of Latrobe Valley arts. Her shop is home to many of us and she even has a crocheting army that taught us and helped us to make 100s of eco water balloons for the "1000 billion litre water fight" We wanted to create tangible objects that could help people understand how much water was going to be needed to fill the 3 coal holes. It was also a great way to connect to people who have lived, worked and supported the power industry in the valley for generations.

02.01.2022 Perfect place perfect time to record history in the unmaking captured by associate artist @Bec Vandyk thanks for sharing. Epic also sound one :D
