25.01.2022 : - Since the 1970s Queensland Agriculture has provided 1080 poison to councils or landowners for free. Now, according to a new article published by Queensland Country Life, government baiting programs are "at-risk" as stocks of 1080 are "expected to run out by the middle of next year" []. The Townsville Bulletin reported that the dwindling 1080 stock was discussed at a Far North Queensland Regio...nal Organisation of Councils meeting at the beginning of 2020 []. The meeting concluded that when the stock was exhausted, 1080 "would only be available from commercial providers". That is, there would be a price to pay for poison. An unnamed Biosecurity Queensland employee explained that "the government was not planning to obtain any more 1080 concentrate for landholder use". Local councils are complaining that "there's no funding for an alternative". Recently, Charters Towers Regional Council successfully lobbied the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) for ongoing government support for 1080 baiting. In a press release published prior to the meeting, the Council explained that they had "submitted a formal motion" requesting the Queensland Government "continue to enable and subsidise Wild Dog 1080 Baiting" after the stockpile originally purchased in the 1970s are exhausted []. According to Mayor Frank Beveridge: Charters Towers Regional Council the region conducts a poisoning program that peppers 1080 "over an area the size of Tasmania twice a year" []. Now, councils and community baiters are demanding ongoing access. ""? () Queensland Country Life report that a memo from this meeting advised that the QLD Department of Agriculture and Fisheries was "developing a plan" which would "explore all alternative options". Yet all of these "alternative options" continued to rely upon 1080 poison []. The Oxford English Dictionary definition of "alternative" is "one or more things available as another possibility or choice" and "activities that depart from or challenge traditional norms" []. 1080 . . : [] Queensland Country Life article: www.queenslandcountrylife.com.au//wild-dog-baiting-progr/ [] Townsville Bulletin article: www.townsvillebulletin.com.au//60de1c9d2bd6359864809f6f92f [] Charters Towers Regional Council press release: www.charterstowers.qld.gov.au//regions-need-state-support- [] The Oxford English Dictionary definition: www.google.com.au//Oxford_Dictionary_of_Engl/anecAQAAQBAJ

When the NSW Government announced it planned to drop one million poison-laced baits across bushfire-impacted areas of the state, we warned that the operation could be disastrous for the survivors who made it out of the flames alive []. 13.01.2022 : "" ' After decades of deadly persecution dating back to the onset of European agriculture in Australia, we're now told of plans to "reintroduce" dingoes in the Victorian Grampians. According to an article recently published in Stock & Land "dingoes could be reintroduced in the Grampians National Park under a Parks Victoria and traditional owners' plan to restore native ecological systems and control pest species" and "ove...rabundant" native Australian animals. Dingoes fulfill an essential ecological service: they are key biodiversity regulators whose presence in an ecosystem controls the populations of other, often introduced, predators. It seems Parks Victoria has finally done some research. Because introduced species have been regarded as a driver of local and global extinction events, often extreme measures have been adopted in attempts to control or eradicate them. In the process, dingoes have been categorised as wild dogs and therefore as introduced. This is in spite of widely accepted evidence of their presence across vast swathes of the mainland for thousands of years. 1080 poison is a leading cause of dingo deaths across Australia. Experts consider it difficult to locate any free-living populations who have not endured 1080 baiting programs. Due to the invaluable ecological services dingoes offer, coupled with the patently inhumane nature of 1080 poison, we believe that all lethal control programs targeting them must be urgently halted. See the Greater Gariwerd Draft Landscape Management Plan for more information. 11.01.2022 : The Courier Mail continue to expose the relentless tragedy that haunts Australian pet owners as more traumatic deaths are recorded across Queensland. The Coalition shared Daisy, Cleo and Kevie's story in July. This is what their heartbroken family told us the day after they passed away:... "Hold your pets closely tonight and treat every day like it could be their last. Because ours was yesterday. Unpreventable and the most horrible day I have ever experienced". ' ' . Link to the petition in the story is available in the comments below.

09.01.2022 : " " The General Manager of Tablelands Regional Council has publicly acknowledged that 1080 poison is not "an ideal way" to kill unwanted, unwelcome or inconvenient wildlife, but the council is going ahead with a baiting operation regardless. "This admission is shocking and revealing in equal measure. The acknowledgement that 1080 does not deliver a 'good death' to its intended victims - or any others... that get killed and brushed aside as collateral damage - is an admittance that there are significant and severe flaws in the current lethal control framework used right across the country. It's shocking because it makes an admission many others in positions of elected authority are unwilling to make, yet in the next breath turns on its heels and says it's not enough to outlaw or discontinue it's use. Why? Because it's cheap and kills everything it touches. If there are flaws - of which there are many - shouldn't these same people who publicly acknowledge them, sit in seats of relative authority and have the capacity to effect local change be working to improve and enact upon them? Without that, this is hollow and lacking in substance" - Alex Vince, campaign director. As it stands, this is little more than lip service to the growing community who are fighting against 1080 in Australia. . . . .

05.01.2022 Recently, the mayor of Charters Towers Regional Council admitted to peppering poison over an area the size of Tasmania two times every year.

04.01.2022 : A press release published by Western Local Land Services boasts that its recent program peppered 160,000 poison-laced baits over an area the size of a European nation. This, in one section of NSW, is impossible to imagine. According to Adam Marshall MP "these numbers might make the mind boggle, but they are necessary out here and speaks to the significance of the threat".... ? Link in comments below.

04.01.2022 'It’s exciting to see real [alternatives] to lethal management of dingoes,' says Colleen St. Clair, a conservation biologist of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, who was not involved in the study. The approach, she says, might not just save farm animalsbut the dingoes themselves". It's amazing what we can accomplish when we consider not killing...... 03.01.2022 Postmortem autopsies have revealed cerebellar degeneration and atrophy (severe deterioration and damage of nerve cells in the area of the brain primarily responsible for coordination and balance). Expert advice given in the event of accidental or deliberate 1080 poisoning in humans maintains that little can be done to prevent [the] progression of cardiac symptoms. For more information about 1080’s threat to humans, see the Resources section of this website particularly the Species section in External Research.
