14.01.2022 CASE 8: UNHOLY LOVE A day’s walk southwest from the river town of Morpeth brought colonisers to the modest valley of Mulberry Creek, where the red-moon faced John Thornton moved with his wife Mary Baker in 1842 to work on a small farm lease run by the Cutts family. For his various felonies in the Midlands, Thornton had been transported in 1830 and ended up as a government man in Newcastle, a tatty and rundown coal town. 03.01.2022 The owners of one of Newcastle's oldest heritage buildings have had a win against council, with a court ruling an approved development application next door is ...invalid. The Coutts Sailors' Home was built in Newcastle East in 1882. A Presbyterian minister, Reverend James Coutts, used his own money to pay for the home. Local historian Matthew Ward said it became a refuge for sailors who were often targeted by publicans who would get the men drunk and then sell them to so-called ‘Blackbirding’ ship captains. In 2014, the two-storey 19-room Newcastle East home was sold and restoration began. Apart from a front verandah, the work on the Bond Street home is complete. But its owners, Diane and Alistair Kinloch, recently took issue with Newcastle Council's approval of a home next door. They argued it did not comply with the development control plan for the heritage area. The Land and Environment Court agreed and has ruled the approval invalid, ordering the owners not to do any work of any kind on the site. The DA was approved by a council officer, without going to a designated committee. Newcastle Council has been asked to comment. (Photograph: Matthew Ward)
