23.01.2022 First one: First Indication you may have contracted COVID-19: Losing your sense of smell could be one of the first signs you have COVID-19, Flinders University experts say. Ear nose and throat (ENT) surgeons said loss of smell was reported in one in three COVID-19 patients in Korea and in Germany it was one in two patients.... Flinders University Professor Simon Carney said the virus causes swelling in the nasal passages and mucus related to smelling and could be used as an indicator of the virus in symptom-free carriers of COVID-19. It is these ‘silent carriers’ who may remain undetected by current screening procedures, which may explain why the disease has progressed so rapidly in so many countries around the world, he said. An ENT professor in London has reported seeing a dramatic increase in patients with anosmia as their only symptom of COVID-19 infection, he said. See more

21.01.2022 Happy New Year to all our readers! Hope you all have a safe boating year. On the subject of safety, it's THAT time of year again. Irukandji have been reported on the north end of Fraser Island, in Strait waters. Stay out of the water or use appropriate protection. If someone gets stung: Ring 000 IMMEDIATELY! 112 on mobile phones. Rinse the sting area thoroughly with white vinegar... Be prepared to treat the victim for shock. Be prepared to apply CPR/ECC Get the victim to advanced treatment as soon as possible. DO NOT : Attempt to use sand or anything else to remove any adhering tentacles, OR Apply methylated spirit or any other liquid, apart from white vinegar. Either action will almost certainly cause the nematocysts in any adhering tentacles to fire and increase envenomation. The victim may experience severe pain with the envenomation. Don't give any analgesics without consulting medical specialists.

19.01.2022 Calling all boaties!! Having finally finished negotiating a bureaucratic tangle to get access to our installation, we can proudly announce that our Channel 82 repeater is now operating at optimum efficiency. We'll be checking its limits over the next few weeks, but we expect that it is now better than it has ever been. Weather and tides are being broadcast at 0735, 1235 and 1735, along with current Notices to Mariners. Give us a call when you go out! We don't want to know where your favourite secret fishing spot is, we just want to know where to start looking for you if you don't come home when expected!

19.01.2022 We strongly recommend checking the tide tables before tying your Tinnie off to any wharf in the Northern Territory

05.01.2022 Hi everyone! Notice to Mariners 122(T) of 2020 has been cancelled, which means Fraser Island is no longer closed. I'd check before planning a camping trip though. Social distancing would still have to be observed. Keep safe, and keep your distance!

05.01.2022 Advice from VMR Bribie: Towing a Jetski Did you know that when towing a disabled Jetski at speed, there is a risk of flooding the engine with cooling water. The... Yamaha Owners manual states: "Tow the watercraft at 8km/hr or less, otherwise water could flood the engine compartment or flow back into the engine causing severe engine damage." Seadoo states: "The maximum recommended towing speed is 21 km/h (13 MPH). This will prevent the exhaust system from filling with water, which may lead to water being injected into and filling the engine. If you have to tow the watercraft faster than the maximum recommended speed, clamp the cross over hose. (Sea Doo makes a special clamp for doing this)." VMR Bribie's recommendation: Consult your Jetski dealer, and have them install a tow valve or supply you with a hose clamp (and instructions) for towing. We do not recommend that you DIY the valve - there are just too many pipes in there! If you don't have a tow tap, we can't tow your jetski at over 6 knots, and it can take a loooong time to get anywhere! Have a safe day on the water!
