21.01.2022 First peek inside a Masked Owl nest On 19 March a new volunteer with our team, Lyndon Quaife of Coastal Tree Services, climbed up to fully document the ‘Keville...’ Masked Owl nest on a bank of the Margaret River west of town, a first for SW WA Masked Owls. The nest is in a dead marri at 10m height in the V of a fork. The 250mm wide hole opens into a large bowl 650mm deep with a floor of 950 by 750mm. We timed the inspection for when the nest site was completely inactive - of the two chicks that fledged in November, a female and younger male, the surviving male reached independence and moved on earlier this month. A surprise find was the remains of a Masked Owl chick that didn’t make it to fledging amongst the bones of prey on the nest floor. Fantastic work by Lyndon. Once the current limits on physical proximity are lifted, we will have a look at our other confirmed and suspected nest hollows and see whether any are accessible. 01.01.2022 Lyndon recently did a great job on doing high branch removal of several trees at our farm at Deepdene. He worked very hard , skillfully and safely, and used the... cherry picker very well.
