15.01.2022 A message from Brett Olds Hi all - THE SMITHFIELD POLICE WOULD LIKE THIS MESSAGE SPREAD PLEASE: I was tagged in a post on the northern beaches page a week or so back, asking about some of the crime issues happening out here on the northern beaches, with people wanting to know what was being done. We’ve been getting groups of 30-40 youths catching buses out here and causing trouble (fighting at the skate park, urinating in elevators at resorts, pushing large commercial bins do...wn steep driveways and generally causing all kinds of issues). I went and sat down with the Senior Sergeant of the Smithfield Police Station yesterday to discuss this issue - and a few others - and found out that they are already working on this problem, working with the Cairns Police side by side. We’ve had 4 weekends in a row of these youths coming out and Police are now running extra patrols in the areas that the issues have been most prevalent and they’re also working directly with Sunbus, who have a direct line to Officers for when they notice these groups heading up north on the buses. If you see any of these groups, be sure to call PoliceLink and give them a heads up (P: 131-444), as they are keen to get these issues resolved. When we all work together, we end up with better outcomes. We also discussed some ideas, like better lighting and preventative measures that Council may be able to help out with in certain areas (like the skate park) and I will be following this up internally at Council. If you can help to spread the word on what efforts are taking place, that would be appreciated. I’d like to publicly thank our Northern Beaches Police Officers, as they do a great job within our community for what can often be a very tough and at times, a pretty unrewarding experience I’d imagine. Keep up the top work! #CairnsNorthernBeaches #PoliceAreOnTheCase #WeAreStrongerTogether
