24.01.2022 Don’t let this fishing trip be your last The department’s Marine Safety Branch encourages and supports Territorians in enjoying boating on our fantastic waterwa...ys, to this end it is important that all boats are maintained in a safe condition, including that any modifications are carried out to the appropriate standards by a suitably qualified person. Don’t risk your life by modifying your vessel without expert advice. Get advice from a qualified person before making any changes to a boat’s hull, outboard or permanent fittings. Stay safe on the water and don’t operate your vessel beyond its design capabilities. A boat builder, marine surveyor or naval architect can check your vessel and tell you how to modify it safely so you can enjoy casting a line from your boat for many years to come. The Marine Safety Branch can assist in providing details of qualified persons in the Territory to help keep you safe in your boat.

Guard to reach wider destinations. Keep an eye out for it, maybe you'll catch it at Dundee on a long weekend. Thank you to Fiona, Dean and Byron for their hard work as volunteers, keeping our waters safe.

20.01.2022 QUEENSLAND STATE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE 09 June 2020 For Immediate Release DON’T PANIC. Coast Guard is still on the job... The Queensland State Council of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association today confirmed that, in the interests of boating safety, Coast Guard services to the boating public will NOT finish, and that its volunteers will NOT restrict their work Council Chairman Robin Hood said, We have noted that our colleagues at Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland issued a public warning this week, saying that unless significant funds are found soon, their services will either finish or at the very least be severely restricted. Their solution is to push the Government into implementing their plan for a ‘single entity’ marine rescue unit in Queensland or an amalgamation with Coast Guard. Coast Guard strongly disagrees and openly opposes this solution. All volunteer services in Queensland could benefit from more government funding, Mr Hood said today. Coast Guard and VMR volunteers have always needed to raise funds to continue their life saving work with the boating community. Nothing new there. However, Coast Guard does not see a single advantage in threatening the Queensland boating public with closing bases or restricting services. Don’t panic! Mr Hood said. Coast Guard will continue assisting the Queensland boating public, and will continue to operate with available resources, as we have always done. The recent Queensland-wide media campaign launched by Volunteer Marine Rescue talks about a serious lack of funds, a proposed amalgamation with AVCGA, the costs associated with Search and Rescue activities, vessel replacement costs and the ongoing maintenance difficulties they are currently facing. Coast Guard agrees that both organisations are certainly in need of additional Government financial support, especially as our fund-raising capabilities have been reduced to an absolute minimum in the current COVID19 climate, Mr Hood said. All our Flotillas are struggling. However, the VMR solution, as outlined in their current campaign, is to push the Government into implementing their plan for a single entity marine rescue unit in Queensland or an amalgamation with Coast Guard. We are openly opposed to this plan. - 2 - Mr Hood said an amalgamation with Volunteer Marine Rescue will be very difficult to achieve, and Coast Guard does not see any real long-term benefits or sustainable financial improvement from such a merger. Additionally, we oppose the recent Blue Water Review proposal for the disbandment of Coast Guard and the formation of a single entity. Again, this would be an extremely expensive exercise for the Government, Mr Hood said. To date, we have not been presented with a single advantage that would benefit the boating public. There has been no explanation of how any such amalgamation or single entity process would work or be paid for. In fact, the overall cost to the public purse would be enormous and as such is highly unlikely to receive Government approval. However, given the current financial situation so many Australians find themselves in including Federal and State Governments, we accept we have an obligation under our current funding Agreements with the State Government to provide a marine rescue service. We will honor that agreement and provide a Search and Rescue response to the best of our abilities. We hope that when the COVID-19 smoke clears and the State Government is in a better position, they will look carefully at our situation and the expectations placed upon us by the boating public of Queensland, and provide the support that is needed. Mr Hood concluded by saying, As a dedicated group of volunteers, Coast Guard will continue to do our absolute best with the financial help we receive from Government, the corporate sector and the public - as we have done for over 50 years without drama and with an unblemished record. ***** For more information, please contact: Robin Hood, Chairman, Queensland State Council, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association, on (mobile) 0476 815 354 Robin Hood OAM Chairman, Queensland State Council E: [email protected] P: 0476 815 354
