15.01.2022 Is your computer Keeping Cool? As we move into the warmer months our computers work hard to keep things cool. Fans in your computer will spin faster for longer to keep temperatures at a safe level. Over time these fans can become clogged with dust which can cause these fans to fail and can eventually cause your computer to overheat. If your computer does overheat it can cause damage to the computer components resulting in computer failure and in some cases expensive repairs.... Some ways you can keep your computer clean are: * Keep the area as clean as possible * Avoid keeping your computer tower on the carpet * Avoid using laptops on your bed or pillow, allow for airflow * If you know how, clean air vents and fans every 6 months ( you may need a tech for this one) Some symptoms of an overheating computer may include: * Frequent crashing or error messages * Computer shuts itself down * Listen for fan operation. When a CPU overheats, the fan may sound very loud. * Feel the back and sides of the computer. A computer that feels hot to the touch can indicate an overheating processor. If you have questions or think your computer may be overheating, then please give us a call on 0424 360 180 www.coastlinecomputers.com.au

14.01.2022 ARE YOUR PASSWORDS SECURE?? By now most computer users have multiple email accounts and other accounts that require login details. I'm sure many users use a variation of a particular password from time to time. Is this safe?... Through my years as a computer tech I have been surprised when seeing just how little people are concerned with security when setting up online accounts. Here are the 25 most common passwords of 2013, along with the change in rank from last year. 1. 123456 (Up 1) 2. password (Down 1) 3. 12345678 (Unchanged) 4. qwerty (Up 1) 5. abc123 (Down 1) 6. 123456789 (New) 7. 111111 ( Up 2) 8. 1234567 (Up 5) 9. iloveyou (Up 2) 10. adobe123 (New) 11. 123123 (Up 5) 12. admin (New) 13. 1234567890 (New) 14. letmein (Down 7) 15. photoshop (New) 16. 1234 (New) 17. monkey (Down 11) 18. shadow (Unchanged) 19. sunshine (Down 5) 20. 12345 (New) 21. password1 (up 4) 22. princess (New) 23. azerty (New) 24. trustno1 (Down12) 25. 000000 (New) Do any of these passwords look familiar? I hope not. I personally try to change most my account passwords every six months. Not just a variation but a completely new password. Having trouble remembering all those different passwords? Try using a password manager application that organizes and protects passwords and can automatically log you into websites. www.coastlinecomputers.com.au

11.01.2022 VIRUS WARNING Just letting everyone know there is a particularly nasty virus circulating. It is spread via email. So be extra mindful when opening suspicious email. It's called Cryptolocker virus and basically when you are infected it will encrypt many of your files. ... A ransom can be paid to decrypt your files but this does not always work. At this stage there is very little that can be done to recover encrypted files, so the best action is to keep backups of all your important data. If you suspect you have been infected, shut your computer down immediately and seek professional advice. www.coastlinecomputers.com.au

01.01.2022 Summer is on the way and with it comes summer electrical storms. Lightening strikes can cause massive power surges through electricity and phone systems. A direct hit can be very serious, but a near miss near a power line can be enough to create a power surge through the system and blow up your electrical appliances. What can you do to protect your home electrical appliances in a storm? 1. Have all important appliances running on surge protected power boards. Good surge pro...tecting power boards also have a socket to protect your phone line or modem line (which is often forgotten in a home). I’d even suggest removing the phone line or cable from your modem during a storm. 2. Unplug critical appliances from the wall. Turning off critical appliances and unplugging them from the wall in an electrical storm (and unplugging your modem or phone line). If your computer is plugged in, then it’s vulnerable. It’s ok to use laptops or phones that are not plugged in during a storm but don’t ever use a wall phone or corded phone, or a plugged in computer during a storm in case your home gets a massive power surge through the lines. If you have any questions regarding the above please contact us to discuss. http://www.coastlinecomputers.com.au/contact.html

01.01.2022 Dear Clients It is advised that through a storm you unplug your phone line and cable connections from your ADSL or Cable modems. I'm seeing many modem failures due to a lightning strike to a phone line or power line nearby. I recommend using decent surge protection boards. These are not a grantee against failure but they will decrease the likely hood. Any local hardware store will sell them.
