24.01.2022 REMEMBERANCE DAY 2020 The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marks the moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front after the bloodshed of World War I. Over the past century, this moment has been adopted across the globe as a time to remember those who served and sacrificed in all wars and conflicts.... This Remembrance Day, (TODAY), RSL Queensland is asking all Australians to Remember to Remember to commit to pausing for just one minute to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country, those who returned home injured or ill, and those who bravely serve our country today. https://www.rslqld.org/Whats-On/Remembrance-Day Photos: The sails of the Sydney Opera House were illuminated in a field of poppies as Australians paused to pay tribute to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice this morning 11/11/2020.

22.01.2022 Warning for caravanners ahead of school holidays... RACQ has urged caravanners to check their vehicle ahead of the school holidays, with the Club attending more than 400 calls for help from stranded caravanners in the past six months. RACQ Roadside Assistance Patrol Howard Strasser said the most common causes of breakdown were wheel changes, tyre punctures and inflations, a fault with the trailer or caravan, and electrical wiring and connection issues.... We’ve noticed recently more and more people buying caravans and hitting the road for Queensland-based holidays, Mr Strasser said. This has also resulted in plenty of people breaking down in harsh conditions, hundreds of kilometres from help, because they haven’t properly prepared their van. We’ve gone to help drivers who haven’t ever towed a trailer before, may not be across the safety risks of not having the right vehicle, or haven’t correctly distributed weight in the van. The risk with towing these often 1500kg trailers is, if you do crash, you can do serious damage. The top locations for breakdowns across the State were Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Gold Coast, Bundaberg and the Fraser Coast. Caravanning Queensland CEO Jason Plant said caravanners needed to prepare themselves for any journey, but particularly important for first-timers. Towing courses are valuable, even for more experienced drivers because they help you refine your towing skills and learn about rules and recommendations, Mr Plant said. Vehicle safety checks are also a great idea before a trip. They will help identify any potential issues you might have when you are away no one wants to break down when on holidays. RACQ’s top tips for caravan safety were: Ensure your vehicle is the right size for the caravan you are towing Know your caravan weights and distribute weight evenly across the van. Install a weight distribution hitch if needed Service your caravan every 12 months or 10,000km Tyres should be in good condition, at the correct pressure and free from damage/cracks Ensure the brake controller works and is adjusted according to the weight you’re towing. Happy and safe travels

22.01.2022 Should you be cooking with coconut oil? There are remarkable claims about the health benefits of coconut oil. Is coconut oil good or bad for you? Coconut oil, with its high saturated fat content, is not recommended for heart health ... The Claims..... Coconut oil contains 92% saturated fat. Yet, some claim it's healthy. Why? Because the saturated fat in coconut oil and the saturated fat in animal products are slightly different. Does this make coconut oil healthy? NO. Simply put, there is no evidence to support the consumption of coconut oil for heart health. The Facts..... Coconut oil raises total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). While the increase in HDL may seem good, it’s overshadowed by the increase in LDL. A study on the saturated fat in coconut oil found that it acts similarly to saturated fats in other foods. That is, it raises LDL cholesterol. ***What oil should I use? Healthy eating is more than the type of fat you use. But there are certainly better fats that can be chosen for your heart health. Olive oil, avocados, nut butters and tahini are better ‘natural’ alternatives to coconut oil. They provide unsaturated fats and minimal saturated fats. What’s more, they are all linked to having a healthier heart. Read more here Heart Foundation

14.01.2022 Become a contestent and you might WIN big! Nine’s long-running afternoon quiz show, Millionaire Hot Seat, will temporarily relocate from its Melbourne base to Queensland to film a block of 30 episodes in the Sunshine State. The move is due to the Stage 4 COVID-19 restrictions which have been imposed on the Victorian capital.... The relocation has been made possible with the generous support of the Queensland Government, including Screen Queensland, as well as the City of Gold Coast and The Star. Production of Millionaire Hot Seat will take place at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. It is expected that more than $1 million will be given away across the 30 episodes, with all winnings awarded to Queensland residents. The special episodes, showcasing the very best of Australia’s favourite holiday destination, will go to air on Nine from October. Host of Millionaire Hot Seat, Eddie McGuire, said: In more than 20 years of making Millionaire, this is the first time we’ve taken the show out of Melbourne. I can’t wait to experience the hospitality that Queenslanders are renowned for. And with the AFL bubble based on the Gold Coast, there’s no better place to be as we approach the pointy end of the season. I’m also looking forward to bringing all the news firsthand from the hub for Footy Classified. Jessica Mellor, Chief Operating Officer of The Star Gold Coast, said: The Star has a proud track record of working with the Queensland Government to bring events to the Gold Coast. We were the first major partner of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, became the new home for the Logies, and now welcome another production from Melbourne in Millionaire Hot Seat. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said this was a rare opportunity for Queenslanders to win some cash while having the city showcased across the country. We are so blessed here in Queensland and the Gold Coast to be able to welcome TV and film productions as well as sporting teams to our city during this very tough time, he said. When I got the call, I said immediately, ‘lock it in, Eddie’. A total of $81,893,000 has been given away on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and Millionaire Hot Seat over the past 21 years. Queenslanders who would like the chance to win $1million should head to the Millionaire Hot Seat page at www.nine.com.au/entertainment/millionaire-hot-seat and apply to be a contestant. Good Luck Millionaire Hot Seat

09.01.2022 2020 QLD general election postal vote applications open tomorrow, Monday 14 September and close on Friday 16 October. Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said the option to apply for a postal vote weeks before the start of the election period, will support electors who may not want to vote in person due to COVID-19. The ECQ is working to ensure Queensland electors have every opportunity to vote for their representative in the next Parliament, Mr Vidgen said. ... Usually postal vote applications open with the issue of the writ, which begins the election period. However, with COVID-19 still a factor, we anticipate strong interest in postal voting just as we saw in March’s local government elections where around 570,000 electors applied. While electors can apply for a postal vote on the ECQ website or by phoning the ECQ’s call centre from Monday 14 September, we can’t mail the ballot papers until after candidate nominations close in mid-October. We remind electors who applied for a postal vote in March and want to postal vote in October, they need to apply again, he said. The ECQ is also establishing special postal voting arrangements for residents of certain aged care facilities which would usually receive a mobile polling service as a ‘declared institution’. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and to protect vulnerable residents, the ECQ is unable to provide this service for this election. However, the ECQ will streamline the postal vote process for these facilities, to make sure it is easy for residents to vote by post if that is their preference. Mr Vidgen said electors can be assured ECQ is ready to deliver a COVID-safe State general election with its Statement of Intent outlining the election’s delivery principles. We are planning for an election period with two weeks of extended early voting days and hours, including voting on Saturday 24 October as well as election day voting between 8am and 6pm on Saturday 31 October, he said. To ensure voting in person can be as streamlined as possible, we ask electors to ‘plan the way they’ll have their say’. That means planning their vote, choosing where and when they’ll vote, staying 1.5 metres apart, using hand sanitiser and bringing their own pen or pencil. The ECQ continues to take the advice of the Chief Health Officer in safely managing voting in Queensland. It’s important to note that due to everyone’s careful adherence to health advice during the March local government elections, there was no subsequent spike in COVID-19 infections, he said. To apply for a postal vote online from Monday 14 September, go to ecq.qld.gov.au To apply via the call centre from Monday 14 September, phone 1300 881 665. To make sure you’re correctly enrolled go to aec.gov.au. To read the ECQ’s 2020 State general election Statement of Intent. ECQ media statements are at ecq.qld.gov.au/media.

09.01.2022 The morning after I killed myself, I woke up. I made myself breakfast in bed. I added salt and pepper to my eggs and used my toast for a cheese and bacon sandwich. I squeezed a grapefruit into a juice glass. I scraped the ashes from the frying pan and rinsed the butter off the counter. I washed the dishes and folded the towels. The morning after I killed myself, I fell in love. Not with the boy down the street or the middle school princ...ipal. Not with the everyday jogger or the grocer who always left the avocados out of the bag. I fell in love with my mother and the way she sat on the floor of my room holding each rock from my collection in her palms until they grew dark with sweat. I fell in love with my father down at the river as he placed my note into a bottle and sent it into the current. With my brother who once believed in unicorns but who now sat in his desk at school trying desperately to believe I still existed. The morning after I killed myself, I walked the dog. I watched the way her tail twitched when a bird flew by or how her pace quickened at the sight of a cat. I saw the empty space in her eyes when she reached a stick and turned around to greet me so we could play catch but saw nothing but sky in my place. I stood by as strangers stroked her muzzle and she wilted beneath their touch like she did once for mine. The morning after I killed myself, I went back to the neighbors’ yard where I left my footprints in concrete as a two year old and examined how they were already fading. I picked a few daylilies and pulled a few weeds and watched the elderly woman through her window as she read the paper with the news of my death. I saw her husband spit tobacco into the kitchen sink and bring her her daily medication. The morning after I killed myself, I watched the sun come up. Each orange tree opened like a hand and the kid down the street pointed out a single red cloud to his mother. The morning after I killed myself, I went back to that body in the morgue and tried to talk some sense into her. I told her about the avocados and the stepping stones, the river and her parents. I told her about the sunsets and the dog and the beach. The morning after I killed myself, I tried to unkill myself, but couldn’t finish what I started. 07.01.2022 Incredible Rescue Story A Brahminy Kite was saved from almost certain death by RSPCA Qld’s Bundaberg Inspector Andrew Petrie. A local fisherman at Coonarr Beach near Bundaberg called Andrew when he saw the bird hanging from a branch with a hook through its beak. The fishing line attached to the hook had got caught on the branch and the bird was unable to free itself and certainly couldn’t fly.... Realising the ladder in his truck was way too short to reach the branch, Andrew called the SES. However even their ladder couldn’t reach the bird so they ended up cutting the branch. Branch and bird plunged into the water and Andrew was able to reach the bird and remove the hook and line. Luckily I had some gloves in the car because he was understandably frightened and his talons were razor sharp, laughed Andrew. I would also like to sincerely thank the SES and the fisherman who called us. The Brahminy Kite was taken to Sugarlands Veterinary surgery who kept him in for observation overnight. He was a beautiful bird and this should be a timely reminder to clean up your fishing waste. Sadly we see birds entangled in fishing line on a regular basis. At our Wildlife Hospital in Brisbane a pelican came in that had seven hooks in it and on it! Andrew was able to release the kite on Saturday Source: RSPCA Bundaberg

02.01.2022 BEWARE So far this year Australians have lost over $8.8 million to threat based scams Young people are reporting the highest losses. Threat based scammers often pretend to be from government departments and rely on fear, intimidation and people’s instinct to comply with authority, to scam victims. ... These scams are mainly phone-based and impersonate various officials, such as police, ATO officers or government investigators. People aged 24 and under reported losing more than $4.1 million to threat based scams and women reported losses three times higher than men. It is extremely concerning that young people are being so severely emotionally and financially impacted by threat based scams, ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said. These losses can be devastating and they can also lead to a loss of trust in authority, meaning victims of threat based scams may be less likely to seek help or advice from legitimate agencies in the future. So far this year Scamwatch has received over 18,000 reports of these scams, an increase of 40 per cent compared to reports across all of 2019. Government departments will never send pre-recorded messages to your phone or threaten you with immediate arrest, Ms Rickard said. If you’re not sure whether a call is legitimate, hang up and call the organisation directly by finding their details through an independent search. Never send money or give credit card details or personal information to anyone you don’t know or trust and never by email or over the phone. More information on scams is available on the Scamwatch website, including how to make a report and where to get help. Consumers can also download the ACCC’s Little Black Book of Scams, which has been translated into 10 languages.
