14.01.2022 A Physio friend recently told me that 70% of her clients sought her out because of an injury incurred doing yoga- not in classes but as a result of imitating some amazing pose on Instagram! And who wouldn’t want to be able to do a free handstand or some amazing back bend? I think wannabe yogis are drawn to these poses because yoga bodies tend to be strong, lean and graceful. They are not worn out by high impact or repetitive movement. Yoga is not repetitive. It works every mu...scle and joint in the body in a unique way in each pose. Even the breath changes with each pose. But most importantly, authentic yoga is methodical. You start with the most basic movements. These early poses stretch the hamstrings and the hips gradually and build spinal strength. One pose leads to another more advanced pose. Authentic yoga teaches you to understand and work with your weaknesses, tightness and injuries. A dancer who comes to yoga with have different challenges from a footballer. Yoga also builds concentration and mindfulness- an ability to find a way into an advanced pose via how it feels. And authentic yoga guides you to recognise your limits so that you do not injure yourself. There is much to be gained from finding a good teacher so that over some time you can find your way into some of these stunning poses without ending up at the osteopath/ physiotherapist. A combination of holistic physiotherapy and yoga is a profound and effective way to stay strong and pain free. Vanessa Shribman is an Iyengar (authentic) yoga teacher who has been practicing yoga since 1987 and teaching since 1990. She owns Coast Yoga in SA and recently started teaching at the Dharma Circle in West Footscray. She is also a holistic physiotherapist and practices at the Western Health Collective and from her home clinic in West Footscray. Vanessa intends to fly to SA and teach on Dec 10-12th if borders are open. She will teach the SUMMER INTENSIVE at Coast Yoga from 27th 31st December. Bookings at Coastyoga.com.au

12.01.2022 For many of you who attend Coast Yoga, you will be familiar with this little fellow in class over the past two years. So just to let you know that I had to have Larry put down yesterday. He had not been his little self for about 5 days so I took him to the vet on Monday where they did a blood test and discovered he had kidney failure. He then went downhill very quickly, stopping eating, drinking and moving. I was advised yesterday it would be best to let him go or take him to the emergency animal hospital which I did and try a drip and a few other tests but he didn’t react, only got worse. So I cuddled him for the last time at 2pm and held him while he died. I will miss him dearly.

08.01.2022 Meet Robert, our oldest student at Coast Yoga who is 84 years young (I’m sure he won’t mind me letting you know this!). Robert has been coming regularly to Friday morning yoga for over 6 years. He recently shared a story with me that he had just had a series of tests with his doctor and was told he is in the top 3% for his age physically and mentally. He partly attributes this to his regular yoga practice - especially the bit where he can quite easily step into his dingy when he heads out fishing for whiting at Moonta Bay! Robert you’re a star

07.01.2022 I rarely share anything personal on FB but I wanted to share such a joyful experience with you all; especially to those to whom over the last almost 30 years I have taught prenatal yoga and birth skills. This has been an enduring passion since my first wonderful birth at home. I wanted to offer women the confidence, knowledge and skills so that they could actualise a positive birth experience. I realised early on in Australia that for most women, birth is at most something to... be endured and at worst, something terrifying to face. I have seen that many women who came to my classes with these feelings transformed over the months of pregnancy and many, many women actually enjoyed the experience of birth and became passionate advocates for empowered birth themselves. Many for whom a C section was the birth of choice out of fear decided that after all, they would plan for an active, natural birth. This week after almost 30 years of teaching things came a full circle when I taught my own daughter who is now 33 weeks pregnant and my gorgeous niece who is a few months behind together with a few other women. It was so powerful to pass these skills, this knowledge on and the experience of working with hundreds of incredible women over the years who have worked with fear and uncertainty to embrace the very best birth for them and their babies. Thanks to you all. See more

06.01.2022 Couple's Birth Workshop at Coast Yoga with Dr Ros Donellan Fernandez (midwife), Dr Thomas Dellmann (counselling), Vanessa Shribman ( Director Coast Yoga and Physiotherapist). Sunday February 7th 10.30-5.30pm We have facilitated these workshops together for 26 years. 05.01.2022 B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Life: The Yoga Way to Wholeness, Inner Peace, and Ultimate Freedom The Duty of the brain is to receive knowledge from the body and guide the body to further refine the action. Pause and reflect between each movement. Then in the stillness you can be filled with awareness. Ask yourself, Has every part of me done its job? When we ask ourselves, What am I doing?, and Why am I doing this?, this is self awareness, which is the opposite of self co...nsciousness. When you are self aware you are fully within yourself. This state of alert repose regenerates the mind and purifies the body. As you are doing an asana you have to recharge your intellectual awareness all the time. That means the attention flows without interruption. Awareness in action brings back energy and rejuvenates the body and mind. Awareness brings Life. Dynamic extension from the core of your being. The goal of all asana practice is doing it from the core of your being and extending out dynamically through the periphery of your body. As you stretch and turn, the periphery relates messages back to the core. From head to heals you must find your center. You must extend and expand longitudinally and latitudinally. If extension is from the intelligence of the brain, expansion is from the intelligence of the heart. While doing asana both the intellectual intelligence and the emotional intelligence have to meet and work together. Extension is attention and expansion is awareness, I always say. When most people stretch, they simply stretch to the point they are trying to reach but forget to extend and expand from where they are. When you extend and expand you are not only stretching to, you are also stretching from.

02.01.2022 Standing pose week Standing poses make an ideal starting point for a home practice because they are the basic grounding and centering asanas. On the physical level, all the postures integrate the body, balancing flexibility, strength, endurance, and coordination. Standing poses work on all of these elements simultaneously, thus giving you a chance to target individual weak points. A series of standing poses moves the body through a full range of motion in every major joint, prepares it for deeper poses, and teaches it to move in an even, integrated way. #trikonasana #parsvottanasana #paravrittatrikonasana #paravrittaparsvakonasana #virabhadrasana1 #utthitaparsvakonasana #utthitatrikonasana #ardhachandrasana #prasaritapadottanasana #iyengaryoga #glenelg #coastyogaglenelg

01.01.2022 Parighasana, or Gate Pose is a unique pose because it unlocks areas in the body that can get overlooked. Due to the deep opening in the side body, space is opened up so that one can breathe deeply into areas of the body that are hard to get to. Parighasana is a deep side bending posture that can stretch out the often-neglected areas of the body. This pose stretches you from the IT muscles on the outside of your quadriceps, through your hips, obliques, intercostals, latissimus... dorsi, triceps, biceps and even your wrist and hand. The pose also engages your core muscles and inner leg muscles in order to stabilize the pose. It is difficult to isolate the inner thigh and groin muscles in order to strengthen them, and Parighasana is an amazing exercise to do just that. When the inner leg muscles are strong, they can support the inner and outer muscles that support the knees, thereby reducing knee pain associated with weakness. Additionally, when all the muscles in the leg are strong, alignment in the entire body is improved feet, knees, hips, shoulders and spine. #coastyogaglenelg #glenelg #parighasana #iyengaryoga #iyengaryogaaustralia See more
