22.01.2022 Purple Flag (Patersonia occidentalis) This beautiful plant is native to Western Australia and blooms in the spring, carrying through to early summer. Its Noongar name is komma. Individual flowers only stay open for one day, however a well grown plant will produce many from the one stem during its flowering season. If you are located in the south west of WA, keep an eye out for this beauty! #wildflowers #westernaustralia

16.01.2022 Our adventurous managing director Tom Grove enjoying a glorious walk up the Hooker Valley in New Zealand The trail crosses several swingbridges and ends at the terminal lake of the Hooker Glacier. Floating icebergs dot the lake and New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki / Mt Cook, lies ahead providing truly spectacular views. This 3-4 hour return walk is on a formed gravel track and winds up the valley and along the Hooker River. Many unique NZ alpine plants can be seen along the way #newzealand #aoraki #hookervalley #mountcook
16.01.2022 Happy Wrensday Wednesday! #fairywren
15.01.2022 Zebra Finches spotted on the Connie Sue Highway, WA. These little guys are the most common and widespread Australian grassfinches, but we still love to see them on tour! Only a small amount of rainfall will send them into a breeding frenzy, also known as irruptive breeding (boom-bust dynamics). They also pair for life If you are interested in travelling on the Connie Sue Hwy (a remote outback track travelling through the Great Victoria Desert and pristine arid landscapes), our WA Outback tour has a few last minute places available! We also camp at the Eyre Bird Observatory, a favourite site for birdwatching, amongst many other highlights! Please see our website for more information and see you out yonder! #wildlife #birdsofaustralia
15.01.2022 Our beautiful native animals need our help! Please considering signing to help strengthen our federal environmental laws
15.01.2022 Male or female This beautiful Painted Finch was spotted at Desert Queens Baths, Rudall River National Park. #australianwildlife #birdsofaustralia
14.01.2022 A Red-capped Robin. This little bird can be distinguished from other red robins by its scarlet-red forecrown (cap) and is found across mainland Australia. We hope all you nature lovers out there find time to #wanderoutyonder and get back to nature, and for those of us who cant, we hope you can return to the wilderness soon. Nature isnt going anywhere (for the time being) #wildlife #nature
14.01.2022 Sooty Terns and their gorgeous fluffy chicks on Lord Howe Island Sooty Terns are a pelagic seabird that prefer the warm tropical waters of the equatorial zone. They come ashore to breed on sandy islands, however spend most of their lives out at sea and are rarely seen. They live about 30 years in the wild and occur in all tropical ocean areas. While they are often mistaken for Bridled Terns, Sooty Terns are much larger, have darker dorsal feathers and different eye markings (the white does not extend beyond the eye). #wildlife #birdsofinstagram #lordhoweisland
14.01.2022 Please remember to snip your mask straps for the sake of our wildlife
14.01.2022 Banksia hookeriana, also known as Hookers Banksia. This lovely banksia can be found in the Geraldton Hills, the Lesueur Sanplains and the Perth metro area. Flowering occurs from April to October, attracting many native birds and insects. This banksia is also used to produce cut flowers due to its vibrant colours and longevity in vases. If you are interested in experiencing WAs magnificent wildflower season, take a look at our Mid West Wildflower tour (please see the link below). We hope you can join us! #wildflowers #banksia https://www.coateswildlifetours.com.au/mid-west-wildflowers/

13.01.2022 An Ornate Dragon (Ctenophorus ornatus). This moderately large lizard is found on rocky granite outcrops in Western Australia and can be distinguished from other rock dragons by its greatly flattened body and distinctly banded tail. Their flattened bodies (as opposed to a more rounded body shape) are specialised for life under rocks, where they seek shelter, hunt and dart from rock to rock. Unfortunately, bushrock collecting removes their habitat and the shelter they need to survive, so remember, take only photos and leave only footprints! #wildlife #australianwildlife
13.01.2022 Hiking is one of the best ways to see New Zealand’s beautiful landscapes and explore its great wilderness areas Think towering snowy mountains, enchanting valleys, beautiful glacial lakes and breathtaking coastal scenery. If you’ve yet to explore the wonders of New Zealand, consider joining Coates in 2022 for an unforgettable journey into the wilderness. #newzealand #hiking
12.01.2022 A Firewood Banksia (Banksia menziesii). This beautiful flowering plant can only be found in Western Australia, from the Murchison River region in the north, to Pinjarra in the south. It is highly sensitive to phosphates and Phytophthora dieback (a fungal plant pathogen that attacks the roots of susceptible plants, with no known cure). Flowering occurs from February to October. To experience the amazing diversity of WAs magnificent wildflower season, join our Mid West Wildflower tour today! Please see our website for more information #wildflowers #flowers

10.01.2022 Australia’s largest salt lake, Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, experiences a small 1.5 m flood every three years, a large 4 m flood once a decade, and fills roughly four times each century. With these floods come the birds Native birds such as the Banded stilt and the Australian pelican fly to Lake Eyre to breed while there is an abundant supply of food (brine shrimp and other small invertebrates). What is most fascinating is that these birds somehow know when inland lakes flood, a...nd travel hundreds of kilometres as a result. We still don’t know how they do this (they don’t have google or the news), but theories include sensing barometric pressure, hearing thunder storms or waves in lake systems, interpreting sonic vibrations and internal magnetic compasses. Amazing! And what a treat for us birdies to see these breeding colonies in action #lakeeyre #birdsofaustralia See more

09.01.2022 Western Australia has so much to offer, from reef to ranges to forests and deserts While many of us are very familiar with the coral coast and the south-west, the golden centre of WA remains more of a mystery. The Gibson Desert is one of five deserts found in Western Australia, located in the heart of our interior arid zone. It is about as remote as you can get and is rarely visited by tourists, meaning the wilderness remains in almost pristine condition. If you would like to learn more about this fascinating place, or join Coates in 2021 as we explore the Gibson Desert bioregion, please see the link below! See you in the outback! https://www.coateswildlifetours.com.au/explore-wa-the-gibs/
09.01.2022 Take a wander amongst the wildflowers as they bloom across the country Spring has sprung so now is the time! #wildflowers #australia
07.01.2022 Today is Reptile Awareness Day, so let’s give some love and thought to our beautiful native reptiles (wherever in the world you may be) Reptiles play an integral role in most ecosystems, being both predator and prey, so their survival is critical to maintain healthy natural environments. Unfortunately, many species in Australia are under threat from habitat degradation, inappropriate fire regimes and feral predators. Please remember to always be kind to our reptile friends..., even the ones that we often fear #reptileawarenessday #wildlife

04.01.2022 Granny Bonnets (Isotropis cuneifolia). These lovely pea plants are native to Western Australia and are very common after bushfires. The back of the standard has beautiful venations (top left) which are often considered more striking than the front face of the flower. Early colonists considered this plant dangerous to livestock leading to its other local name Lamb Poison. Granny Bonnets can be distinguished from other Isotropis species by their long tapering cuneate leaves and the single flower at the tip of a long stem. #wildflowers #australianflowers
