24.01.2022 In a wonderful acknowledgment of the work of so many people in and around Cobargo, the entire community of the Cobargo region has made it to the semifinals of the NSW & ACT Regional Achievement and Community Awards in the Awards Australia Connecting Communities category. It's a recognition that the relief and recovery effort following the New Year's Eve bushfires was a true community effort, involving many hundreds of local people determined to help each other through this disaster. We are proud to belong to this community and what a honour to have made it through to the semi-finals.

21.01.2022 PHOTO SHOOT FOR COBARGO REGION RESIDENTS: WEDNESDAY 30 SEPT Showground Arena 4.30pm Judging of the prestigious NSW/ACT Regional Achievement and Community Awards... is now complete and the Community of the Cobargo Region has been selected as a Finalist in the Award Category: Awards Australia Connecting Communities Award. Winners will be revealed at the Awards presentation on 20 Nov. We have to provide a selection of photos for the Awards presentation. We would really like a massive group photo of every local resident from the village and local area who has made a contribution to help our community through these toughest of times. Every contribution is important - however you lent a hand - whether you worked your ring off at the relief centre, did the hay deliveries, unloaded supplies, delivered supplies, cooked food, cut hair, cleaned the loos, sorted donations, looked after animals, grew seedlings, raised funds, established a new project, provided a shoulder to cry on - all this and more. Every single contribution to helping us get back on our feet is acknowledged in this nomination. Getting to the Finals is an acknowledgement of the enormous effort of all of us, from those who were involved in Cobargo’s emergency response, the relief effort and now the ongoing recovery work. It acknowledges everyone who was there to support family, friends, neighbours and all those people you didn’t know at the start of this but helped anyway. So to mark this amazing effort and to have a photo that shows just how many local people volunteered their time to support this community there will be a gathering for the photo on the Showground Arena on Wednesday 30 September at 4.30pm. Don’t be late - we need to get this shot before the sun goes down. We need to maintain social distancing but it would be great to have a heap of people there. The photo will then be provided to the Awards Australia/ ACT and NSW Regional Achievement Team to put into a montage for broadcast at the Awards presentation.

12.01.2022 Liz McKinlay, CEO of Australian Business Volunteers (ABV), is visiting Cobargo on 8/9 September. ABV runs a volunteering program, with National Australia Bank support, aimed at providing targeted help to communities, businesses and community not-for-profits. They draw on ABV’s own volunteers as well as NAB staff who want to share their business skills and experiences free of charge to help with activities including grant preparation, business planning, developing business ca...ses etc. ABV and NAB would like to come to Cobargo to hear where these skills might be of use and to then bring more people hours to help in these areas. They can help with identifying and preparing development applications, identifying and preparing grant applications; managing committee procedures, not-for-profit mentoring, fundraising etc. ABV works remotely so they can also have remote support available to not put too much pressure on the resources in Cobargo. If you think this type of help would be useful to you, please email [email protected]

12.01.2022 The Cobargo Community Bushfire Recovery Fund committee met on 20 August and approved a seed funding grant of $5,280 for the design concept for a Cobargo Community Building/Community Fire Refuge. In their application, the Yuin Folk Club, the Cobargo Showground Land Manager supported by the Cobargo A.P&H Society, said the proposed $2m building would be built at the Showground, The proposed building would give Cobargo and the region a bushfire refuge and evacuation centre as wel...l as a modern community facility for use by community organisations and others. This is a major Cobargo community recovery project that has broad support from the local and regional community and is gaining support from sponsors and corporate donors. The project team is working to get significant funding support from governments at all levels and advises that there will be more information about this project in coming weeks. 10.01.2022 Exciting news! Judging of the prestigious NSW/ACT Regional Achievement and Community Awards is now complete. Cobargo has made it through as a finalist in not one but two categories! The Cobargo Showground Land Manager has been selected as a Finalist in the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment Crown Land Manager Excellence Award. The Community of the Cobargo Region has been selected as a Finalist in the Award Category: Awards Australia Connecting Communities Award. Woohoo! Go Cobargo! Go us!

10.01.2022 The Cobargo Community Bushfire Recovery Fund committee met on 17 September and approved two grants. Kate Ogden and the Cobargo Preschool received $5,500 for a wildlife habitat box project. Kate and the preschool will work with children, parents, local residents and private property owners to build and install these boxes in the local area. This project addresses environmental rehabilitation, animals (an incredibly vulnerable group within our community). It can take up to 7...0 years for a tree to mature and create a hollow which serves as nesting place for these precious animals. We are helping them along by building boxes that are specially designed for each species needs. Target species include Glossy Black Cockatoos, Brush tail possums, Pygmy possums, Sugar gliders, Lorikeets, Microbats, Feathertail gliders. The second grant of $8500 will support a community arts project developed by the Cobargo Wellness Group Inc. "GINGER THE FROG" uses story, theatre & songs to entertain & assist the community to counter negative feelings resulting from trauma. This project is designed for children & families & uses simple animal characters to tell a complex story of transformation & recovery. One of the animals has lost his home in a bushfire. The grant will be used to fund a series of "GINGER THE FROG" previews & workshops for our local communities, will engage participants in a range of activities focusing on developing creative skills, developing wellbeing practices & building confidence, and provide critical feedback about the project that can be incorporated into the final product. It will also provide a springboard for opportunities for further community arts collaborations & sustainable projects. This project will promote Cobargo as a vibrant creative arts hub. The project team has identified a need amongst children to find a way to process & talk about the experience of the bushfires, a challenge further compounded by the restrictions of Covid-19. Thanks to everyone who is supporting this fund. Spot the Feathertail Glider (this one was rescued days after the NYE fires on Peak Alone).

01.01.2022 The Cobargo Community Bushfire Recovery Committee met on 15 October. The Committee appointed two new members: Carolyn Cole (Yowrie) and Inna Skyrpay (Cobargo) and approved four new projects: Quaama Tennis Club: Quaama Tennis court enhancement $5000 Quaama Tennis Club aims to upgrade the existing tennis courts as a multipurpose sporting space for young and old, including a BBQ area with shelter and additional seating. Funding is contingent on the club raising the totality of t...he monies required to deliver the project. Stonewave Taiko: Holding the Rhythm $7867 The project will enable purchase of a collection of Taiko drums and provide for their storage to allow the further development and expansion of Taiko drumming teaching in Cobargo. Stonewave's Cobargo drumming class began at the School of Arts in 2018 and has built a group of dedicated players, many new to making music but enthused by the challenge and joy of playing together. Disruptions to the program from the fires and COVID19 have left this group hungry to return. Stonewave is committed to resourcing the class and has started back with COVID safe practices in October. This project will make the classes sustainable and expand taiko drumming within Cobargo and surrounds. The Cobargo Community Library. $3000 This project is a community lending library. The aim of the library is to build local resiliency by providing literature and audio that supports individuals and groups to achieve emotional, physical, mental and spiritual health and wellness. This grant supports the ongoing work to address trauma and other mental and emotional impacts of the fires that continue to affect many members of our community. Back to Country: Healing the Country of Cobargo to Heal People $15,000 This project is about healing the trauma from the drought, fire, flood and Covid that has had a massive impact on Yuin Country. This project will provide an opportunity for people to heal with the land, having a belonging and a responsibility for something other than ourselves, and knowing that if we take care of Country we are taking care of ourselves as a community. The project includes 18 workshops exploring six themes that focus on the importance of observing nature to inform how to take care of Country and heal ourselves as part of Country, plus ceremony and dance. The project will be led by Yuin Elders, Uncle Max Harrison, Aunty Shirley, Uncle Bruce Pascoe, with Back to Country and members of the Yuin Community. The Committee farewelled Greg Holland and thanked him for his contribution to the establishment of the fund and his commitment through these first months of operation. Greg's counsel is greatly appreciated by the team and he will remain as an advisor to the fund committee. Photo shows the new bike track in use at Quaama School - one of the first projects to be funded by the community fund. Thanks to all who have contributed.
